Northern Michigan hunters prepare for the October 21 opening with blinds at Thomson area resorts and reports of plentiful ducks due to heavy summer rains. Regulations statewide set two zones with Oct 21 to Nov 19 in the north and Nov 20 to Dec 19 in the south, daily 7 am to 4 pm, three-shell limit, no live decoys, no baited shooting, and a $1 federal duck stamp required in addition to state licenses.
Carroll county household science club officers met at the Farm Bureau office in Mt Carroll to arrange a poster contest for rural and grade school pupils. The contest, tied to the Carroll County Warmers’ Institute in Savanna January 9 to 11, will have rules explained in county schools later. Committee members Mrs HL Engicking Lanark Mrs YP Roske and Lawrence Broci of Bit Carroll were chosen to finalize arrangements.
Savanna High School held a public ceremony in the auditorium to initiate new members of the National Honor Society. Students in the top third of their class, with parents present, received invitations. Mary Goss presided with Jane Hafeman and Katherine Wilcomb assisting. new members include Eaves Hollister, Ruby Kuarp, Geraldine Mack, Jane Sardwell, and Genevieve Withbart. talks were given by current members and the evening address by Reverend Whitey.
Claude Cook Jr oversees a 4000 head flock east of Chadwick on Claude Cook farm, part of Carmichael of Freeport's 50000 flock. Local men contract flocks on a share basis, with farmers receiving half wool and lamb proceeds for labor and pasturage. Total sheep exceed 5000 after new arrivals. Carmichael also has 10000 head near Peoria to be similarly disposed.
A government department states that until a special legislative session revises the Old Age Pension law, it will not prepare or distribute application blanks. Counties may be accepting forms without department guidance, and no definite procedure can be provided yet. Director A L Bowen confirms the hold on official guidance.
Heads of the corn hog control program announce a nationwide referendum will be held October 26 to decide whether to adopt a 1936 adjustment plan. All 1935 corn and hog producers will vote yes or no on continuing the program, with contract signers and non signers tabulated separately. Local meetings this week will explain the referendum details at Morrison, Polo, and Freeport with Farm Bureau officials and corn hog association directors expected to attend.
In circuit court Judge Albert Manus refused a temporary injunction to stop the Thomson Church of Christ trustees from using church property. The case was continued to November 25 for a ruling on dismissal or a permanent injunction. Blodgett of Fulton represented the plaintiffs, Reynolds of Chicago argued for the trustees.
Dr. Frank J. Juka warned at a Quincy address that tularemia is prevalent again. He urged careful handling of rabbits squirrels opossums and quails as season begins to prevent a long illness in humans from contact with raw animal flesh.
Montana ranchman pasture plans describe moving a large flock of sheep to Claude Cook farm near Chadwick under contract with local farmers. M. E. pastors for the district are named at the Elgin conference. Pastors return to Thomsons and Mt Carroll. New minutes name a church at Milledgeville.
County tax assessments for 1935 indicate fewer autos than 1934 with 3009 automobiles and … Trucks rose to 332 from 228. Cattle headcount fell from 29007 to 28132. Sheep and goats surged from 3206 in 1934 to 6633 in 1935. Horses and mules increased with 195 in 1934 to 212 in 1935. Household furnishings and office equipment values declined. Drought pressure and feed issues affected livestock outlook.
Kort. B. Schmidt and Frank Schr oeppel were elected justices in Mount Carroll township at a Thursday special election. Only a few votes cast with no opposition. Schmidt 36 votes Schmidt received 34 votes. J. W. Duncan and B. C. Rose each received one vote as write ins in one precinct.
Robert Voss leads dairy cattle with Thomson Club top spot while Edward Strutz wins beef projects and Kenneth Wood takes sheep honors in the 4-H livestock divisions. Harold Yochem earns the Wilson award for all around livestock, with medals and cash prizes awarded for best kept books across pigs, dairy, beet, and sheep.

Following a conference with Gov Herre Berner state architect C Ber eck Hammond and state PWA director Jon H Bauer construction will be rushed on 12 PWA projects in Tingin and Totsch. The projects total about 6.856 million with the state adding 3.769 million and PWA grants totaling 3.051 million to finance the work.
The State Department of Highways asked for bids on bridges culverts and grading for 7.56 miles of Route 171 from Thorn ton to the Junction with Route 78 east of Argo Fa Bids open October 18 in Springfield. Work could begin this fall or winter depending on weather and right of way has been secured for the federal aided project.
