New Boston New Hampshire column stresses everyone should hire a lawyer and draft a will without delay. It warns most deaths occur with no will, leading to unwanted heirs and disputed property, and promotes temporary wills via a center for quick guidance.
The Jane Addams Council of Girl Scouts led by Mrs. Wm. T. Bingham released camping statistics. Of 105 troops, 75 participated. 36 of 48 Intermediate Troops sent campers to Camp Hideaway for July and August sessions limited to 48 girls per session. Camps at Mt. Carroll, Dixon, Prophetstown and Camp Hideaway near Freeport. four June day camps with 825 Brownies and 53 Intermediates. 98 volunteer day camp staff. Senior Scouts sent a primitive camp team of 8& girls to Region VII at Camp McCormick near Byron. Winter overnights at Hideaway noted. Camp Savings Stamps to fund next summer’s camping promoted by stamp chairman Mrs. P. N Hardinger.
Mr and Mrs Carl Krafft of East Savanna announce the engagement of their daughter Shirley Ann to William Schneider son of Mr and Mrs Kenneth Schneider Sr of Mt Carroll. No wedding date set. Shirley Ann Krafft is a Savanna high school graduate and a bookkeeper for Shaner and Handel Electric. William Schneider is a Mt Carroll high school graduate and engages in farming with his father southeast of Mt Carroll.
Palisades, Lanark, Hickory Grove, Lima Larks and York Progressives hold meetings from Oct 18 to Oct 21. Roll call includes fabric, laundry and first aid hints. Major lessons cover artificial respiration and recent developments in medicine and public health.
Mt Carroll notices the Carroll County Rural Youth meeting moved from October 11 to October 18 to avoid clashing with the Dixon district meeting. Dixon hosts a talk fest officer elections talent fund winners recreation and refreshments. Transportation will be provided to Dixon. The Rural Youth Cider Ball is set for October 30 at farm bureau hall with rural youth and nearby counties invited.
Chadwick residents Mr and Mrs Allen Yeager and family joined Sunday dinner. Clinton Ta guests included Mr and Mrs Vincent Weis. Friday and Saturday brought a Chicago sightseeing trip for Mr and Mrs Oscar Brown Jr and Mr and Mrs Glen Turney. Additional visiters included the Jens Andresen family with Doris at Carl Petersen’s home in Thomson. Milledgeville hosted Mr and Mrs George Bittner Savanna and Mr and Mrs Arthur Behrens with Verlin Gene Behrens. A hearty scramble dinner gathered Mr and Mrs Carl Merkel Lanark Mr and Mrs Harlan Merkel and daughters of Mr Carroll and Mr and Mrs Arthur Hoffman at Mrs Mary Hoffman’s home with Olive Hoffman.
John A. Seger principal of Thomson grade school was elected president of the Carroll County Education Association at a Savanna meeting. He succeeds Fred Hubbell of Mt. Carroll. Perry Rockwell and Esther Schmaling were named vice president and secretary respectively, with Ralph Lyerla as treasurer. The session included slides of the Rose Bowl parade and Savanna-area scenes. Next meeting set for Oct. 22 at Mt. Carroll.
Pomona Grange met in Rock Creek Grange hall near Lanark Monday night with Master William Hans presiding. A literary program highlighted by poems and articles was followed by reports, announcements of dances and social events in Milledgeville and other halls, and officer elections slated for November 8.
Savanna notes report Julia Rehfus 84 died Oct 6 after a 10 day illness at the Richard Altensey home. Funeral in Law funeral home and burial in Savanna cemetery. Also James F E Yates 74 died Oct 7 at home after months of illness. Funeral at Hunter's Fuller Memorial chapel and burial in Savanna cemetery. John Arthur Nielsen 69 died Oct 7 in Mendota. funeral in Mendota with burial there. Surviving relatives listed for each.
Clinton R. Plock of Lanark elected chairman of the Carroll County ASC committee at Mt. Carroll. Glen E. Law of Savanna named vice chairman and Iesesi Rahn of Milledgeville named member. Twenty farmers elected as community ASC committeemen for the coming year.
Sheriff Harry Miller logged two weekend accidents both minor. At 2 30 a m Oct 9 Mrs Audrey Fulrath of Mt Carroll lost control on highway 88 north of Milledgeville, injuring passenger Holmquist. driver reportedly dozed. Later in heavy rain Paul Kuntz of near Brookville pulled off, let two cars pass, then reentered and was hit by Ray M Jones of Winnebago. a two year old suffered bruises.
Gene Fritz is named assistant to Chief Art Robbe in the Mt Carroll fire protection district formed to operate from Oct 1. Bob Sievert resigns as assistant chief after the move to the new district. Symptoms of inadequate wiring include octopus outlets and long cords.
Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Behrens and son were Sunday dinner guests in Clinton Indiana at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Krebbs. Mrs. George Bast spent Sunday with Harold Bast. Mrs. Arthur St Clair and daughters Marlene and Patty visited the Ralph Burkholder home in Stockton where Mrs. Burkholder is recovering from major surgery.
County officials to be elected in November will see higher annual pay after the board of supervisors approved increases. County Clerk W M Nine re election bid, Lulu M Ross seeks treasurer post, Henry Truninger runs for sheriff. raises funded by fees, not taxes, with two election day pay boosts for judges and clerks.
The fourth annual plant managers conference is set for October 25 to 27 at the Northernaire Hotel in Three Lakes Wisconsin. Attending are plant managers division managers superintendents farm field and factory superintendents plus general office staff panel discussion representatives and Robert Herdman of Lanark.
Miss Theresa Donahue returns to Freeport after visiting her grandparents the Coble family. A weekend in Mor rison, Glasford, Hayworth, and Alton is noted with several relatives visiting or traveling. Abel van Dyke funeral in Fulton is reported, along with visits to Mercy hospital Clinton by family members and extended trips to Omak and Winona.
County board reduces overall levy by 84 075 with general fund down to 50 000 and highway levy up 2 000 to 40 000. Township bridge aid falls to 40 000 while tuberculosis and other funds hold steady. increases offset by better fiscal balance and lower projected construction.

The 13th district of the American Legion Auxiliary held its fall school of instruction on Oct. 7 in Dixon at St. Paul’s Lutheran church. 170 members attended with registration at 9:30 am and luncheon by the church ladies.
Mrs Vernon H Bashaw was elected president of the Carroll County Home Bureau at the Farm Bureau Hall in Mt Carroll on October 7. Officers include Mrs Jess Queckboerner as vice president and Mrs Frank Dudley as treasurer. About 120 attended. West End Unit Thomson won largest membership gain. Otter Creek Milledgeville led in attendance.
Delores Daehler, a student nurse at Swedish American Hospital in Rockford, spent the weekend at her parents Mr and Mrs Vernon Daehler. Mrs Leota Manning and family from Shannon visited Mr and Mrs Harry Blakeslee and Mr and Mrs William Blakeslee and families for Sunday dinner. Mr Merlyn Schreiner and daughters and Mrs Cora Geison joined Mr and Mrs Don Bogott near Milledgeville for Sunday dinner.
Officials advised a mailing window through November 15 for Christmas parcels to overseas troops. Surface mail sent before November 15 should arrive by Christmas. after November 25 air service may not ensure timely delivery. Postmasters urge timely mailing, prioritizing medical and military supplies, and warn against sending perishable food matches or lighter fluid.
Clinton Iowa Dr and Mrs Ross King will travel to Chicago and Philadelphia for postgraduate study. He will attend the American College of Chest Physicians course and Cook County Hospital program in Chicago then study Bronchoesophagology under Dr Chevalier Jakson at Temple University in Philadelphia.
