Arson Charged In Thomson Blazes

Virgil MacDonald’s Thomson property suffered several fires in one night as the village faced arson fears. Robert MacDonald, 22, was arrested after a polygraph test in Chicago and charged with arson. Bond set at 10,000 dollars allowed his release while a preliminary hearing is scheduled.

Fire destroys two barns amid Monday blaze near Milledgeville

A fire that leveled two large barns on a Milledgeville area farm also wiped out 2000 bales of hay 500 bales of straw and a hay rack and gear. Five fire departments aided Milledgeville responders with no injuries reported and insurance covering the loss. The farm tenants are the Allen Temple family with owners Mrs. Fred Volkers and Dr. Paul Hanna. Investigators have not yet determined the cause.

Mrs. Terry Elliott reports Terry Elliott is a Forest Service forester in Dubois Wyoming. He led a 25 member Indigenous crew fighting a Canadian forest fire near the Idaho border from Sept 2 to 9. ABC filmed the episode on Sept 8 and aired it Sept 9. He was later at Sundance Idaho as liaison officer for another fire and expected to stay about ten days.

Thomson Teen Club Plans Opening Soon

Thomson plans to open a Teen Club using the old high school gym as a meeting place. The organization lists sponsors and pro tem officers led by President Lee Groharing and Secretary Treasurer Violet Horton. PTA Plans Local Mardi Gras

The PTA has named a committee to plan Thomson's annual Mardi Gras celebration. Mrs Hal Hoy chairs with Mrs John Krahn Mrs Clifford Durward and Mrs Richard Atherton as members. The PTA leads planning with other local groups helping on finances. More news to come next week.

Necessity of Nursing Home Explained More

In Carroll County the lack of local nursing facilities forces seniors to leave for care. Since 1961 the county has averaged three to six people per month needing nursing care outside the county, with one licensed home at 59 beds always full. Projections suggest a 70 to 100 bed facility is needed based on 1960 census data and 15 percent over 65, rising to 20 percent. Rev Earland Lilly warns the shortage will worsen without action.
