Babson argues farmers are not fooled by high prices for wheat and corn and warn prices will drop sharply after booms. He lists five price drivers including exports to Europe, poor U S weather, wasteful consumption, grain used for liquor, and currency growth. He notes potential 1948 tax changes and urges frugality to curb food price squeezes.
A Milledgeville milk truck, reportedly out of control, struck a parked car near where Charles Sueder was working. Both vehicle and truck sustained considerable damage in the collision.
The Johnson reunion is scheduled for Sunday October 5 at the home of Mr and Mrs Esper Johnson near Chadwick. Guests included Mr and Mrs Joseph Weber and Mr and Mrs Howard Baker visiting the Arnold Farthing home Sunday evening.
Arthur L. Hart, 75, Milledgeville, died after a collision with a milk truck on state route 88 near Sterling. The truck, driven by George Schnitzler, 29, of Milledgeville, swerved onto the shoulder while braking, then returned to the opposite lane and struck Hart head on. Hart was pronounced dead on arrival at Sterling hospital. The coroner’s jury cited a head injury as the cause. State officials testified about speed and signals. witnesses gave conflicting accounts of brakes and stop lights. Hart’s body was to be taken to Shirk funeral home. he leaves two sons and two daughters.
Fisheries division crews operate in the Savanna vicinity removing bullheads from over crowded waters. The rescued fish will be distributed to Kids Fish Ponds across the state while Savanna waters are restocked with game fish.
Milton Hess of Lanark Farm Bureau director attended a state Farm Bureau leaders meeting in Springfield on Monday. Hess served as Carroll County representative at the session.
Pupils in grades 1 to 4 at Argo-Fa Consolidated School listed with names. Miss Hilda Knoess of Chadwick teaches. Willing Workers Class of M E Sunday School hosted a Friday event. attendees named. Food sale planned for October 4 at Ned Spencer's Store with proceeds noted. Ada Slusher enters fifth grade at Argo Fa. Leland Schmaling to Urbana as a U of Illinois freshman.
Clarence Van Buskirk of Chadwick exhibited purebred Herefords at the Illinois Hereford Breeders' Association fall sale in Normal on Sept 16. His bulls and females earned honors with Roy Triumph 10th named overall champion, Miss Triumph 12th reserve, and bids reaching $1000 for Princess Mixer Pith and other Van Buskirk animals selling to buyers from Ottawa Bloomington and Carlock.
Judge Jeon Zich presided Monday at a hearing on a motion by Atty Ralph Eaton to quash the indictment charging Frank Gerens Dubuque Ta and Nicholas Feren Chienge with theft of two slot machines. Prosecutors and defense presented arguments as state police testified. The judge continued the hearing to October 10 and ordered jurors summoned for Wednesday not to report for duty on October 14.
The county clerk's office reports new marriage licenses issued to Clarence L. Geison of Chadwick and Patricut Murney of Mr. Cay, Robert L. Dyson and Dorothy Jean Noble of Lanark, Don Carlyle Geary and Bonita Gretcher Glenn of Milledgeville, Glenn E. Hun of Mt. Carroll and Alice Rapp of Palmer, Robert Moore of Milledgeville and Alice Ann Kniss of Lanark, and William Eversoll of Rockford and Bernice Shafer of Savanna.
County Clerk W. M. Nipe attended a meeting of Illinois county clerks in Springfield this week to discuss the state tax arrangement. The report lists numerous property transfers including Katherine G Sanders to Louie Engelking and Barbara M Spinks to Edna M Hower among others in Savanna Lanark Milledgeville Chadwick and Shannon districts.
Moss Janice Schreiner daughter of Mr and Mrs Lloyd Schreiner departs for Minneapolis Minnesota to enter the N W Institute of Medical Technology for clinical laboratory training at hospitals. She is a Chadwick Community high school 1947 graduate and is accompanied by her mother and sister Charlotte Schreiner.
Carroll county's Stransdale Air Park near Savanna receives State certificate of approval as a Class 1 airport. Privately owned by veterans Howard Gorman and Roland Curry, the 160 acre site will include two diagonal 2400 foot runways and a 2000 foot east west strip, a water system, night lighting, repair shop, and future seaplane base. Training planes have been purchased and field owners include May, Joseph Runyan, Bill Styples, and Russell Hastings. Gorman serves as flight operations head and Curry as maintenance chief.
Mt. Carroll gun club elected William R. Tipton president at a meet in Tipton barber shop. Roy Finnabaugh and Herschel Hopkins of Mc. Carroll named vice president and secretary-treasurer. Plans announced for a blue rack shoot south of Mt Carroll on Sunday December 6.
Dessert bridge hosted Tuesday at the Zugschwerdt home by Mrs EBu eue Abder and Mrs Helda Helm. James Waters of Pole won high, Don Hmurn was second, Clarence Van Buskik took third. Several guests, including Mrs John Frank and Mrs Cowles Stuart, attended among many others.
Mr and Mrs Joe Spealman of Coltu hosted a birthday dinner for Mr Spealman with Elizabeth Senneff entertaining guests. Mr and Mrs James Ansle hosted at Coltu. John Wey and son from Uhango joined Mrs Wey and Mrs Schrader for a weekend at Mt Carroll with Won Schmaling. Mrs Charles Lewis attended Anda Tilton’s funeral in Oregon. Tilton had long been a local resident and died six days after his wife.
Notices were sent to Carroll county June grand jury members guiding them to report at 10 a m Friday Oct 3 for the fourth session of the term.
Members selected for the October term of the district federal court in Freeport are ordered to report at 10 a.m. on Wednesday October 20. Judge William J. Campbell of Chicago will open the term with Judge Elwyn R. Shaw expected to preside. Local appointees include Glenn Ashby Carroll Harold D Atherton Thomson Mary C Taylor Chadwick Arthur H Burch Morrison Julia A Evans Fulton Robert C Finnicum Myrtle M Florence Eric and Lee A Beebe Forreston.
Mrs. C. H. Sword, 82, a Carroll County native, died Sept. 25 at St. Francis hospital Freeport after a fall fractured hip. Funeral 2:30 p.m. Saturday in Mt. Carroll funeral home. burial Lanark cemetery. Born Sept. 10, 1865, she married C. H. Sword in 1888. Survived by husband and daughter Julia Sword of North Hollywood, California.
Funeral rites were held for Mrs. Melvin Bowman 69 in Mt. Carroll with burial at Oak Hill. Louisa Lippelt Bowman born 1878 in Platteville Wisconsin and married to Melvin Bowman. seven daughters and two sons survive plus many grandchildren. Additional notices list Isaac Ritenour 72 of Carroll County died in Clinton Iowa and burial at Hickory Grove. infant Richard Dana Moore of Savanna buried there. Charlie E. Wilson 45 of Lanark died at Mrs. Cora Dietrich home with funeral arrangements ongoing.
Mrs. H. E. Zugschwerdt and Mrs. Albert Hartman hosted a house warming and welcome celebration for Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Van Buskirk and Mrs. Emma Van Buskirk. Over eighty relatives attended at the Chadwick home with fall flowers and white tapers as refreshment trays were served.
Funeral services for Oscar W Rahn 79 of Lanark were held Sunday at his home and Brookville Evangelical church with Rev. George Walters and Rev. R W Tenney officiating. Burial followed in Lanark cemetery. He was born February 23 1868 in Rock Creek township Carroll county and survived by a son Leroy two grandchildren three sisters and three brothers. Local relatives attended from Chadwick and vicinity.
First smoker of the season hosted by Chadwick lodge No 867 A F and A M in the Masonic hall on Monday evening October 13. Lodge officers will chair the organizing committee.
A county American Legion meeting is planned at the Legion Home on Lanark Road Thursday at 8 p.m. Residents urged to attend and participate in community service planning.
The funeral of a Lanark resident was conducted in the afternoon at Frank Funeral Home with the Rev. William Weet officiating. Burial followed in Lanark Cemetery.
James Paschal aged 80 died Saturday evening at six at the home of his son-in-law Virgil Malnix. He was born March 18, 1863 in Fenton to William and Elizabeth Paschal and married Elizabeth Steinhagen Dee in 1895. Surviving are his wife, six daughters, two sons, and several grandchildren. Funeral services were held Tuesday at 2 p m at the Lutheran church with Dr F M Keller officiating and burial in Bethlehem Cemetery.
George W Polhill, 44, a farmer living northwest of Mt. Carroll, suffered serious abdominal injuries when he fell against a tractor’s power takeoff while working on his farm. Taken to Freeport hospital after emergency care, his condition was listed as critical.
Mrs. Herbert Spealman hosted Sharon Spealman seventh birthday with guests Sylvia Sharon Stein Mavi Thelma Kahler Carol Sue Miller Judy Fossett Lynette Spealman Loretta Harmon and Shirley Kness. Children played games and received gifts while refreshments were served. Carrol County 4 H leaders meet in Mt Carroll Farm Bureau hall to pick winners for state honors with O F Gaebe assisting.
