Bodies of Carroll county men reach U S shores

The first bodies of Carroll county soldiers from World War II arrived with the army transport Robert Burns at New York. Cpl Paul L Burns from Milledgeville and Sgt Paul A Smith of Mt Carroll, both killed in action in Belgium and Germany respectively, are identified by next of kin and will be sent to designated cities for burial. Burns is buried at Henri-Chapelle Military Cemetery in Belgium.

Pleasant Hill Social Proves Successful Despite Foggy Conditions

Heavy Snow Hits Area Sunday Night

Snowshore's and snowplows worked Sunday night and Monday morning as about four inches blanketed the countryside. Travel remained hazardous Monday with slippery roads. Early day pavement offered footing, but after 20 degrees ice slowed traffic. Temperatures rose later, light flurries at night, cloudy Tuesday gave way to clearing skies before noon. No major accidents reported though cars slid off roads and minor crashes occurred.

Chadwick Cagers Lose Opening Games Of Season

Chadwick high school basketball opened with a 57 34 defeat at Elizabeth and a 34 08 home loss to Sabula. In the Elizabeth game Queckboerner Wagner each had 8, Olson and Shedon Frank 6, F ckert 5, Meyer led Elizabeth with 16, Wiley 15, Tippett 12. Wagner scored 17 in the Sabula matchup while the rest of Chadwick struggled. The B squad dropped Elizabeth 24 20 but beat Sabula lightweights 3 24. Thanksgiving guests invited by Mr and Mrs Chester Alexander include relatives from Colett, Vernon Alexander, Andrew Miler, Alvin Reiff, Elmer Hans and Le Roy Stoner, and Maude Alexander.

Illinois High Court Upholds 1947 Congressional Redistricting

The Illinois Supreme Court last week upheld the 1947 congressional reapportionment act. A writ of mandamus forced Iroquois County Clerk to follow the act, clearing the way for using 26 districts in 1948 primaries and general election. State Rep Franklin A. Stransky welcomed the ruling calling it the end of a long campaign for proper redistricting.

Boys Purchase Calves From Mackay Farm

Chadwick and Thomson Futur Farmers and 4-H members bought eleven Hereford calves at a club calf day sponsored by Donald Mackay at his Chadwick area farm last Saturday November 22. The calves came from the Mackay Montana ranch and were bought by Chadwick residents John Janssen Richard Janssen Junior Adolph Raymond Adolph and by Thomson residents John and David Murray Ruseli Sikkema Arnold Sikkema two each and Harvey Houzenga.

Circuit Court Trial Dates Set in Carro County

Trial dates for Carro county circuit court are listed for next weeks by jury and by court. Jury trials begin December 1 with Eader vs Klapp and run through December 19 with Ime! vs Dach er. Court trials start December 15 with Hawk vs Pits and continue to December 18 Dalrhein vs Widdes. The jury panel reports December 1 and will return for listed dates. Brattleboro Vermont November 19 the 27 cow herd of registered Holstein Friesians owned by John R Derrer and Son Mt Carroll Illinois completed a year of production testing in the official Herd Improvement Registry of the Holstein Friesian Association of America. Average butterfat 482 pounds and milk 19563 pounds with milking twice daily. Highest producer Burke Montvie Lulu belle yielded 662 pounds butterfat and 18459 pounds milk. Testing supervised by University of Illinois in cooperation with the Holstein Friesenian Association of America.
