There will be a big dance at the Modernistic ballroom in Clinton on Friday November 28. Sherman Hayes and his orchestra come direct from the Blackhawk restaurant in Chicago. The orchestra is heard nightly over WGN.
The Rev. E. E. Frank of Holly Colorado called on Noah Sweitzer in Thomson last week after attending a funeral in Wooster Ohio. He formerly preached in the Community church and lived in Lanark while directing an orphanage at Holly. Also, Mr and Mrs Harold Tomman of Milledgeville visited Merle Atherton Tuesday.
Thirteen persons were indicted by the grand jury for November in nine true bills returned Monday afternoon. Four face drunken driving charges, three thefts from a truck, two for illegal slot machines, one for neglecting to support a wife, and two for other offenses. Bonds range from 250 to 6500, with several defendants from Mt Carroll Stockton Sterling and Savanna. Marvin Morris of Clinton had a no true bill after attempting to steal melons near Thomson.
Chadwick residents vote December 2 on a special election to authorize bonds up to 25000 for grading and blacktopping village streets. Engineers estimate total project cost about 22000 with half for grading and base. Polls open 6 am to 5 pm at the town hall.
The Salem Merry Circle club changes its regular meeting from the second Wednesday to the second Thursday of each month. The new date affects all upcoming sessions.
Veterans of World War II with lapsed National Service Life Insurance have less than two months to reinstate without a physical exam. Harold C. Steen, Illinois Veterans Commission officer in Carroll County, will assist. After June 1, 1948, a medical exam is required for reinstatement of lapsed policies older than three months.
Mrs Emmett F Trayer, 74, native of Fair Haven township, died at 3 45 a m Sunday in her Chicago home after illness of more than three years. She married E F Trayer in Chadwick in 1892 and lived in Savanna for many years. Funeral held Tuesday at Fuller Funeral Home Savanna with Rev E Cedric Pope officiating. burial in Upper York cemetery Argo Fa. She is survived by her husband two daughters Mrs Paul Stevens of Savanna and Mrs J H English of Chicago seven grandchildren nine great grandchildren and a brother Clarence Homedew of Savanna. One son, one daughter, a sister and two brothers preceded her in death.
Mrs. Edwin Gillespie, 58, died at 1 15 a m Monday at her Savanna area home after a lingering illness. Funeral services were held Wednesday in a Savanna funeral home with Rev M C Kilpatrick of Hanover officiating and burial in Zion Amy Belle Byars Cemetery. She was born May 19 1839 in Savanna and lived on a farm in Washington township. She married Edwin Gillespie on June 14 1911. Survivors include sons Wayne L a University of Maryland student and Delmar of Blackhawk Village a granddaughter her mother and two brothers Harry Byars of Mt Carroll and Glenn Byars of Savanna.
The Band Mothers sponsor a benefit program in the school gym Thursday night November 20. Committee chairs include Mrs. Louis Frank raffle Mrs. Wm Quest cake Mrs. Robert Traum food sale Mrs. Elmer Fink table. The band will present a short program and all proceeds support band interests.
Northern Regional conference of Hitneis Federated Woman's clubs met at the Community House in Dixon on November 14. Discussion covered federation work and praise for the year’s efforts. Chadwick attendees included Mrs. O. H. Rahn Mrs. Alvin Larem and Mrs. Fred Olson.
Burial services were held Monday afternoon in Fair Haven cemetery for Karen Rose St. Clair infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur St. Clair of Chadwick. Born Friday afternoon Nov. 7 at Savanna hospital, she died there at 2:10 a.m. Sunday Nov. 16. Surviving are the parents two sisters the paternal grandmother Mrs. Jo St. Clair and maternal grandfather Roy Mackey.

About five members and guests attended Ramah chapter’s Monday evening installation of new officers. Colorbearer Hartman presented the flag, and Stanley Larem, son of the new matron, delivered the flag ode. New officers include Alvin Larem as worthy matron and Clarence Van Buskirk as worthy patron, with a full slate of assistants. Guests came from Millersville, Lanark and Mt. Carroll.
Mrs Minnie Turnbaugh welcomed Jas Turnbaugh and his son from Mr Carroll's family. Mr and Mrs Fred Hartman hosted supper guests Sunday night with Harry Allefi from Sterling and William Rentschler from Fulton. Overnight guest Miss Mary Taylor and others visited on Monday for Herbert Senff's 14th birthday. more visits included the Schreiners, Stein family, and the Knocas household.
The Carroll County Farm Bureau will hold its annual meeting on Saturday January 31 in the Mt. Carroll high school gym. George Metzger of Chicago field secretary of the Illinois Agriculture Association is invited to speak. Morning and afternoon sessions include officer reports music and entertainment with a noon box lunch. Delegates to the JAA convention in St. Louis were named Earl Burkholder Lanark Robert Schubert Mt. Carroll James Erdmier Shannon and Elmer Airhart Savanna.
An Oklahoma style letter to the county board argues foxes wreck pheasants quail and pigs, urging a 5 bounty paid by the Department of Conservation and signed by a local hunter taxpayer. It claims foxes devastate poultry and urges action to protect game and farmers.

Mr and Mrs Merlin Miller of Sansas City Missouri have left the home of her father J J Provant after a short pending stay and returned to their own home.
A five-acre plot on the Merlyn Schreiner farm northwest of Chadwick yielded 96.54 bushels per acre in the current season. The DeKalb 404A hybrid was planted May 20 with commercial fertilizer and manure used on the plot, Schreiner reports.

Guests include Donna Hartman, Louis Decker, Spurgeon Harter Sr and Jr with Renae, Fay Hawkins and Michael, Barbara Ann Aude, Barbara Jane Spaulding, and extended visits from Sterling, Milledgeville, Rock Falls, Polo, and Milledgeville families.
LeRoy son of Mr and Mrs Harlan Handel celebrated his eighth birthday Thursday evening with games gifts and a decorated cake. The Fair Haven and South Elkhorn schools visited KROS in Clinton on Thursday to participate in the Quad County School program Rhythm and Rhymes. Pupils used coconuts and percussion to perform rhythm pieces and prepared a transcription for the next broadcast "Mr Pumpkin Runs Away."
A Sunday gathering at the J. J. Prowant residence included Mrs. Paul Cormany and Chalmer of Compton California, Jack Prowant of Catalina Island, Forrest Prowant of North Long Beach, California, and relatives from Kansas City Missouri, Mt. Carroll Illinois, Milledgeville Illinois, and others. The California guests departed Wednesday for their homes.
The Hope E U B church Youth Fellowship met Friday evening at Beverly Handel's home for a regular gathering. The program featured group singing scripture reading and a lesson study on Knowledge and Virtue led by Everett Spanogle with Dorothy Shibley and Dorothy Shibley among attendees. Refreshments followed.
Mr and Mrs Vernon Alexander hosted guests including Mr and Mrs Allen Bowles and Mrs Bill Howard of Port Byron. Their daughter Lynette, after a hospital stay in Rockford, returned home with the Spearmans. Rev Wye of Nachusa orphanage led services in the First Lutheran Church in the pastor’s absence. LaVere Clark of Mendota visited Chadwick for business last Wednesday.
The ceremony at Hope Evan eal United Brethren Church in Chadwick united Miss Mary Janssen and George Morgan in a double ring wedding. The event featured organ music, candlelit altar, and a reception in the church parlors before the couple departed for a southern motor trip.
