Four Men Injured In Highway 80 Car Truck Crash
Four men were injured in a collision on Highway 80 three miles north of Thomson at 10 45 Saturday morning. John Sutton of Harrisburg Ill suffered severe bruises and possible skull fracture while three others Charles Ashcraft of Champaign Illinois Charles Youtzy and W L Boldt of Elizabeth were treated for shock and bruises. All were taken to Savanna City Hospital. The milk truck driver was uninjured and the truck owned by Handel Bros Chadwick.

Over 10 000 farmers from 17 states competed in the national event, with regional yields recorded across Lanark Shannon and nearby farms. The county winner’s crop used Jumbird No. 404A and was measured on the best five acres, earning a plaque from the DeKalb Agricultural Association. Eight Lanark 4-H and Future Farmers youths join stock men and youth entrants from eleven states and Canada for the Chicago Market Fat Stock and Carlot Competition at Chicago stock yards November 29 to December 2 replacing the regular International Livestock Exposition. Lanark entries head for the show November 27 with junior judging November 29 and sale December 2. Junior Livestock Feeding contest totals 547 head of baby cattle lambs and hogs, up 39 from last year.

Savanna voters reject utility purchase and city ordinance
Savanna residents last Thursday decisively rejected a proposal to buy the strip and a factory from Northwestern Il linois Utilities. The tally 448 in favor to 1104 against for the purchase and 439 to 1197 against the city ordinance to acquire the utility reflected broad opposition. The future disposition of Northwestern Illinois Utilities properties remains unclear amid prior federal orders to break up holding companies and possible interest from other buyers.

Shot In Chest Loyal Ready Injured In Suspected Accident
Loyal Ready a 21 year old resident of Savanna accidentally shot himself in the chest with a .22 caliber pistol Sunday night in the Fourth street business district. He was taken to the city hospital where officials reported his condition not serious. Ready is married with a three weeks old daughter.

Resignation of Carroll County Clerk Gelwicks announced
John R. Gelwicks, Carroll county circuit clerk and recorder for seven years, resigns effective December 31 1943. He has accepted a post with Fox Valley Production Credit association in Geneva Illinois starting January. Appointment to fill the remainder of his term will be made by the three circuit judges of the 15th judicial district. Gelwicks first won election in 1936, succeeding the late Valentin Boerner, and was re elected in 1940.

Morris Wins Award With Hybrid Corn
George R. Morris, veteran hybrid corn grower from Carroll County, won first prize of 50 dollars in a contest sponsored by Kenneth Fairland Associates of Genoa, Illinois, for ten ears of Furr hybrids. Philip Lang, local agent for Furr, delivered the prize ear to Genoa and submitted it to the judging. Morris praised the uniform quality of the new variety and plans to plant more Single Cross seed next season with tenant Homer Zuck. A. J. Strauch of Polo, a former Chadwick farmer, earned third prize of 15 dollars with a Furr hybrid 67 exhibit.

Chester Lewis Bouvia 41 machinist mate first class of the navy native of Savanna is officially declared dead by the war department. He was missing in August 1942 while aboard the U S S Grunion in the Aleutian Alaska area. Born October 3 1921 he enlisted January 16 1941 and later worked at the DuPont plant in Clinton Iowa before re joining service. Surviving with his widow are his parents a daughter and a brother, plus many locals and relatives noted in the record.
