Clarence Collins 18 and his brother John were convicted July 13 1939 of murdering Lieut Paul LaMaster CCC camp commander at Mt Carroll March 1 1939. Clarence seeks pardon at January 1944 hearing. Clarence, then 14, got 20 years. John got death. Clarence at Pontiac prison. John insane at Statesville awaiting execution.

Several hundred county farmers prepare statements on current year income and tax payment due December 15. Rockford bureau assigns at least two deputy collectors to five zone offices in Mt. Carroll Galena Oregon Precinct Belvidere. Farmers may use form 1040-F and final 1943 return is due March 15, 1944 with adjustments. A farmer must derive at least 90 percent of income from farming including stock dairy poultry fruit or truck farming.

Beaver colonies found on Low’s Island near Savanna

Funeral rites for James J. Sheridan 72 in Thomson
James J. Sheridan lifelong York township resident and 27 year York county board supervisor died Friday at his Thomson home likely from a heart attack. Funeral held Monday at St Peters Church Thomson with burial at Calvary Fulton. Survivors include widow two daughters Irene Weatherwax and Helen Hand two grandchildren plus three brothers. Sheridan helped build St Peters in 1914 and served on county board since 1916 becoming chairman 1926. Hundreds attended from across the area with many officials present.
