The Illinois committee for women on juries launches its third campaign to enact mandatory jury service for women. It stresses capability and fairness, citing 1929 referendum approval and contrasts with other states.
Carroll County Farmers Institute officials met Monday evening in Thomson to arrange program numbers for the annual event. The York Community high school gym in Thomson hosts the sessions on December 9 and 10 with speakers announced for men’s and women’s divisions. The Kerr jar Company is represented in a Saturday morning canning demonstration, and Thomson’s band and glee club, plus soloists, will perform. prize list additions were noted and a full awards list will be published next week.
Republicans of Carroll County will gather in Savanna Friday evening December 2 for a banquet under the county central committee. The event is chaired by Franklin A. Stransky state representative Lewis Phillips Savanna committeeman Ed Voight Savanna head of the county Young Republican club and Ray R. Westfall sheriff elect. Mr and Mrs Cecil George and family of Morrison and Mr and Mrs Walter Queckboerner attended a dinner hosted by Mrs Anna George honoring her sister Mrs Elizabeth Hughes of Hollidaysburg Pa. Sunday afternoon callers were Mr and Mrs Jerry George of Savanna.
Local farmers may apply for loans on the 1938 corn crop after December 1. The program offers credit support against forthcoming harvests.
A $3 inspection fee will be charged after December 1 to Carroll county farmers applying for AAA corn loans at 57 cents a bushel. The county committee will guide eligibility, inspect corn and crib, and prepare a loan worksheet. Eligibility hinges on farm acreage, storage moisture, and marketable grade.
State Highway Officer Albert Herbig arrested Rudolpho Valledores of Savanna for driving on the wrong side of the highway. Valledores was fined $10 and costs by Justice C. J. Fisher of Savanna after a collision with Irwin Frederick of Lanark on Route 80 near Route 64 at Savanna. occupants escaped serious injury.
October records show 26 deaths in the county and 14 births, the highest monthly death total reported in years. One death followed a railroad accident. eight deceased were at or beyond the age of 60. Births include several girls and boys in Savanna and nearby towns with multiple entries from October.
Four Carroll county officials chosen by voters in the November election will take office December 5 at the county seat, with the fifth official to begin next summer. Veterans include County Judge Orion M. Grove and County Clerk Walter R. Watson. Sheriff Ray R. Westfall and County Treasurer Lula Ross are new to their posts. Superintendent-elect L. E. Bruci will be sworn in next summer. Nine local students placed in the sectional corn grain and poultry show at Sterling Coliseum.
Estate administrator announces public auction of Gus Shibley’s personal property on December 2. Sale held on the George Kruse farm north of Chadwick Route 78 and features 36 cattle including 31 dairy cows, two bulls, power farming equipment, and corn and oats. Also notes Illinois three shot law applying to protected game and gun requirements.
County Republicans plan a Savanna banquet for an evening event. Northwestern Illinois editors meet in Rockford on Friday. One hundred fifty Legionnaires attend a district meet in Stockton on Sunday. County October deaths total 26 with only fourteen county births that month. Chicago livestock market stalls as stock handlers strike with no immediate settlement. Four H clubs award medals for outstanding work and longevity. Four county officers elected or reelected in November to be sworn in December 5 with fifth not taking office until summer. At Lanark high school gymnasium the county 4-H club rally announced members honored for 1938 work. Gold pins for five plus years went to Harlan Carbaugh, Gail Lamoreux, Earl Woodin, Kenneth Wood, Mr. Carroll, Joseph Rath, and others. silver and bronze pins awarded for three to four years and one year respectively to numerous members across Lanark, Savanna, Mt. Carroll, Chadwick, and Savanna. Agricultural projects honors included Maurice Guenzler as state project champion and various county project medals and cups.
Examinations for automobile drivers licenses begin next Monday and continue indefinitely. The tests, both written and oral, will be conducted by three state policemen from Galena Oregon and Dixon and assess driving ability physical condition and the vehicle's mechanical condition. Individuals notified to take the exam may inquire at the sheriff's office for dates.
Indicted, tried and sentenced within hours in court action on Monday. A rapid legal resolution saw the defendant receive a prison term shortly after arraignment, reflecting a streamlined judicial process. The swift timeline highlighted efficient prosecution and sentencing procedures in the case.
James St. Freeborn 56 of Sycamore was indicted by Carroll county grand jury on issuing fictitious checks. He pleaded guilty before Circuit Judge Leon A. Zick and was sentenced to one to 20 years in Joliet penitentiary after arrest on September 28 when he claimed his car was stolen. A car license number tied to the case had been listed by Mt. Carroll officials after suspicions of checks passed on local merchants. Grand jury adjourned to Monday November 28 to hear more cases.
The U S Engineers plan to clear 2300 to 2500 acres of Mississippi river bottomlands in Carroll county and near Belle Vue Iowa. Work will start soon under direct supervision with government hired labor about 1000 men from nearby communities. Headquarters will be in Savanna at the former Commercial State bank building. Olaf Levi Jr will be resident engineer with eight Savanna office staff and eight in the tool room. High water delayed operations but the start is hoped for by Friday or Saturday.
