57 Cent Loan On 1938 Corn Announced By Agriculture Secretary

Secretary Henry Wallace announced a 57 cent per bushel loan rate for 1938 corn in the commercial corn belt after farmers meet crop control requirements. Loans run for one year and can be repaid with corn or grain surrender. Outside the commercial area loans are 43 cents per bushel for those under soil-depleting acreage limits.

Carroll youths win 4H state championships in Carroll County

Seven Carroll County 4-H members earned state project championships from Illinois extension specialists. Home economics champs include LaVonne Holm Blanche Seim Jane Miller Ruth Wolf and Grace Keeney. Agricultural champs are Maurice Guenzler and Harry Stengel. Also recognized as outstanding members are Blanche Seim and Harold Yochem.

County Missions Entertained By Carroll Group

About a dozen women from the Woman's Missionary Society of the First Lutheran church attended a Mt. Carroll meeting of the missionary society. Societies from nearby towns were invited as part of the countywide rotation. Rev. Mr. Dolbeer reviewed a book during the afternoon.

Government worker dies in Thomson auto accident

Theodore J. Dorse, 37, of Oquawka Illinois, died after his car left highway 80 near Thomson. He was returning to Savanna for a government barge job when the Terraplane rolled several times and struck a hedge. Coroner's inquest held with witnesses detailing the crash. Survived by wife, a son, and a daughter.

Elect Officers for Carroll County Dairy Herd Association

New officers and directors of the re organized Carroll County Dairy Herd Improvement association were elected at a Mt. Carroll meeting last week. Rush Carroll was named president, W. G. Warnock vice president, Edwin Keim secretary treasurer, with R. R. Porter and Milo Aspinwall joining the board. Russell Hall was rehired as tester for the coming year.

County Supervisors Hold November Meeting Actions Reported

Carroll county supervisors allowed routine county expense bills and approved a depository banks resolution. They tabled one blind benefit application for December and offered a bid to move ex soldiers bodies to a Savanna cemetery plot, referred to a committee. A surplus commodities ruling was explained, and right of way for a Milledgeville to Polo state route drew concern over farmland damage and possible re-survey. The committee will ask the state highway department about an alternate route.

Neighbors Help Carrie Atherton After Fall

Neighbors gathered Tuesday to pick and haul Mrs. Carrie Atherton’s corn after she sprained her knee in a fall last Friday. About 17 or 18 neighbors assisted, with dinner provided by Mrs. Will Hans and helpers Mrs. Ernie Lartz and Mrs. Alvin Reiff. Mrs. Atherton expressed gratitude for the kindness.

Bad Check Artist Victimizes Stores In County Towns

A man dressed as a workman passed rubber checks to four businesses in Thomson Savanna and Mt Carroll last week. Each $10 check bore the name H W Miller though no account existed at Thomson State Bank or Savannah National Bank. The first check dated Nov 2 1938.

Sam Ethridge Dies Tuesday in Rockford

Sam Ethridge 33 of near Hazelhurst died at three o'clock Tuesday afternoon in Rockford sanatorium. He was born September 15, 1905 on a farm northwest of Lanark and married Mildred Spencer February 24, 1928. He lived in Eagle Point township and ran an auto parts business. member of United Brethren church. Surviving are widow, son Hal Elmer, sisters Grace Haley Hazel Daehler Lanark, brothers Paul Joe Rockford Glen Rae Colorado. Funeral plans not finalized.

Federal Grand Jury Indicts in Freeport Condemnation Case Action

A federal grand jury in Freeport returned an indictment dismissed for now as the defendant is not yet in custody. Judge Charles E. Woodward presides with 82 jurors, 36 dismissed, 34 excused on a condemnation suit in Jo Daviess county. Two locals, William Straw and George Phillips, serve on a Carroll county case opened Monday. The panel toured Galena river land by boat. Fifteen naturalization papers were finalized including immigrants from Ireland Denmark Yugoslavia and Germany among others.
