Babson Park column surveys post election mood, noting a shift after the 1946 race. It argues that both Republicans and Democrats served and warns on labor policy, markets, and the 1948 presidential landscape. It forecasts Christmas trade and urges individual initiative in small, non union workplaces.
Milledgeville high school cagers defeated Forreston 49 to 18 in the first home game of the season. Milledgeville led with 21 field goals while forcing Forreston into five. Forreston won the preliminary game 25-20. Box score of the main game.
A Carroll county grand jury returned a true bill naming Calvin Palfrey and Charles Palfrey of Savanna on larceny charges for taking items including a radio thermos jug and a lunch sack from Floyd Mowry’s car near Savanna about two weeks earlier. Both men were held in jail in lieu of $1,500 bonds.
Eldon Graham, longtime Savanna police member, named temporary police chief by Mayor I. R. Sanberg. He replaces Henry W. Truninger, who resigned to assume Carroll County sheriff duties effective Nov. 15. Truninger will take over his new duties in December.
Mrs. Carl H. Kness and Mrs. Harry Carbaugh hosted a dessert-bridge for friends at the Kness home last Wednesday afternoon. High score prize went to Mrs. L. A. Frank, second to Mrs. Kenneth Senneff, and the third prize to Mrs. W. J. Woy. Attendees included Mrs. John Frank of Mt. Carroll and others from Polo Lanark Thomson and nearby communities.
Harry Wubben of Polo paid 150 and 25 in Mt Carroll after pleading guilty to shooting three hen pheasants and having a gun set up in a car. Frank Hutchinson of Milledgeville also paid 25 for a similar gun in car charge. Both arrests followed by Game Warden Kenneth Flickinger of Lanark.
Community dance sponsored by Black Oak Grange Chadwick occurs Wednesday evening November 27 at Thomson High School. Proceeds go to Thomson Fire Department. Admission 50 cents per person. Music by Larry Harmon’s Melody Band. Tickets to be sold soon.

Mt Carroll couple Mr and Mrs Robert Acker announce their younger daughter Lavonne to Pvt Maynard Decker son of Mr and Mrs Louis Decker Mt Carroll. No wedding date set. Decker left Saturday for Camp Stoneman Calif after a short furlough at home.
Last week a series of reading clinics for county school teachers was led by Mrs. Wilma Hiatt representing World Book. The first session was Wednesday at Georgetown school, followed by Chadwick, Chestnut Park, and the Mt. Carroll courthouse sessions concluding Thursday evening.
A Morrison truck driver said his rig struck a large buck on Highway 80 just north of the Mississippi Palisades park entrance Friday. He left the scene, returned to find the deer gone, and said the front end of the truck was so damaged it could not be driven.
Emily Thorpe aka Q0 was found dead in the basement of her Milledgeville home on Nov 13. An inquest ruled accidental death. Survived by daughter Mrs Cottingham of Sioux City Iowa and son Charles Thorpe of Baytown Texas. Funeral held at Milledgeville Methodist church.
Miss Eva Randecker 66 died at 1 17 p m Wednesday November 13 in Savanna city hospital after a ten day illness. She lived with sister Mrs Charles Wurster north of Savanna for ten years. Funeral services were held in Stockton with burial there. Born June 23 1880 at Massbach she was a daughter of Martin and Louisa Randecker. Surviving are brother Martin of Massbach and four sisters Mrs Caroline Wurster Miss Louisa Randecker Mrs Ben Albrecht and Mrs Charles Wurster.
Lena Haring nee Beck died at 2 30 p m November 14 at the home of her son in law and daughter Mr and Mrs Ray Buckwalter Savanna after a two week illness. Born March 26 1861 in Derrida township Daviess county she married Charles Haring in 1892 he died in 1908. Survived by son Fred Haring two daughters Mrs Buckwalter and Mrs Glen Kane one brother Charles Beck and one sister Mrs Mary Diehl all of Savanna.
Mrs. K. C. Whitney entertained her bridge club last Thursday evening with prizes for high score awarded to Mrs. Carl H. Kness and for second to Mrs. Howard Brett. Present were Mesdames Stephen Adee Ralph Spanogle Ellis Dentler of Milledgeville Howard Brett Albert Hartman Eugene Miller George Dambman Jr and Car Kness.
George Schleming bought the Mrs George Daehler residence at public auction Saturday afternoon in Chadwick. The sale price was reported as 3610 dollars.
Mr and Mrs Harry Appel and family were Sunday evening callers of Mr and Mrs C J Miller, sharing a social visit and greetings.
Mr and Mrs Paul Kier of Morrison celebrated their silver wedding anniversary with an open house on Tuesday Nov 19 to suit a water event. The couple wed Nov 20 1921 at St Pauls Lutheran church west of Chadwick with Rev Hugo Braun officiating. They lived in Clinton and Chicago before moving to Morrison in 1930. Mr Kier a World War I and II veteran and interior decorator partner with E E Ridley. They belong to the Morrison American Legion and Legion Auxiliary. Mrs Kier attends Bethesda Lutheran church. They have a daughter Jacqueline Bealer of Fenton and granddaughter Susan Dee. Mrs Kier is sister to Mrs Curtis Naniga and Mr Kier brother to Mrs George Daehler of Chadwick.
Sylvia Galusha daughter of Mrs Mabel Galusha of Fulton married Marvin Turnbaugh son of Mr and Mrs Harold Turnbaugh of Chadwick in a quiet ceremony at the Turnbaugh home on Friday November 15 Attendants Avna Blink and Marvin Sikkema both of Fulton wore blue and blue and black accessories The couple will reside with the groom's parents and a luncheon followed the ceremony
The Fair Haven students perform Pirates and Pearls and During the Cold on November 25 at 8:00 pm. Admission benefits the Junior Americans club.
N R Kenyon spent weeks with daughters in Oak Park. Mr and Mrs Chas Freeman Jr and family of Mt Carroll hosted Geo Schmaling's guests, with others visiting from Freeport. The E club held a family night with about 100 attending. Rev Darrell Draper spoke on war conditions, Miss Gladys Cooper presented films, and Miss Esther Schmalng led readings and singing. Plans for a Dec 7 bazaar and chicken dinner were announced. Argo-Fa students created book markers for National Book Week with Hilda Knoess judging. Rural school directors near Lanark hold meetings to study consolidating districts. L. E. Bruch, county superintendent, says the series aims to map consolidations to cut costs and raise education quality. A county survey committee has worked across the county. a final report is due next spring.

S J Doyce of Rockford and Chas Whitmer of Lanark pleaded guilty to resisting an officer on Saturday. Justice Frank Schroeppel fined them $75 and costs. unable to pay, they were jailed. The men were involved in a fight with Lanark policeman Charles Diehl after arrests by Sheriff Eber Shepherd on Thursday and Friday night.
Henry Truninger, newly elected sheriff of Carroll county from Savanna, works this week in the sheriff's office with Sheriff Eber Shepherd. He will take office December 3. The county jail holds 12 prisoners, with beds scarce and feeding them on a dollar a day is the bigger challenge.
Nettie Kramer died October 19 1946 near Lanark following asthma and heart complications. She was born September 6 1894 in Chadwick Illinois, married William Kramer in 1911, and lived on farms near Chadwick and Lanark. Survived by husband 11 children 16 grandchildren two siblings and her parents. Funeral held October 21 at Frank funeral home Lanark with burial in Lanark cemetery.
Chadwick Woman's club meets today in Mrs. Oscar Rahn's home with piano solo by Rhea Jean Schreiner a talk on Shawls and Fans by Mrs. Grace R. Squires and vocal solo by Mrs. Carroll E. Brauer in the afternoon.
Mr and Mrs Frank Merlak and their children spent the weekend at Sterling. Mrs Donald Brand and Terry of Belmont visited from Wednesday to Sunday in the Ed Mest home. Donald Brand visited from Saturday to Sunday.
Whiteside County Pomona Grange held a regular meeting at Mill edgeville with seventy members and four visitors. One candidate joined. reports from Rock Creek and Milledgeville granges were read. Officers elected include Master D. D. Dale Palmyra Grange and secretary Lucille Rahn Milledgeville. Next meeting December 11 at Palmyra for Pomona officer installation.
An adult agriculture class will demonstrate the own er-hampler method of milk testing to improve dairy herds at Chadwick High School in the agriculture room at 7 30 p m Thursday Nov 21. M R Stengel notes only about four percent of Carroll county s 16 000 dairy cows are on test.
A group of relatives surprised Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Zugschwerdt on their 30th wedding anniversary Friday evening. Guests included George Youtsy of Cedar Rapids. Nolan Zugschwerdt and Craig of Maquoketa. Carl Zugschwerdt of Savanna. Will Frank of Lanark. John Frank and Glen Zugschwerdt families of Mr. Carroll. Melville McKean and family of Milledgeville. Louis Frank and Lano. The evening featured games, cards, lunch, and many gifts.
Leo Fritz held a closing out sale Monday on the Ed Schreiner farm southwest of Chadwick. An excellent attendance and strong prices accompanied the sale. A high cow brought 212 dollars. Fritz plans to move to Denver for his son's health.
Winter migration has begun as residents head south for Florida. Mr and Mrs H E Zugschwerdt left Friday for Sarasota to winter in a trailer. H H Zugschwerdt followed to Tampa. Will Lewis plans Sarasota lodging with son in law and daughter after a Shawnee Oklahoma visit with sister in law.
Mr. and Mrs. C. J. Miller and family, Mrs. Jane Miller, and Mr. and Mrs. Elwyn Turnbaugh were Sunday dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. Russell Klitz. Mr. and Mrs. Walter Geison were last Friday dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Schreiner.
Troy over Elizabeth 75 46 as John Elliott and Tom Root lead with 17 and 15 points each. Meyer of Elizabeth tops scoring with 21. All five Trojans reach 10 plus points while the younger squad adds 21 12 in the final period.
A large audience attended the Fair Haven Center social held Thursday at the school. Charles Guinther sold cakes pies and other pastries at auction while Mrs. Smith and her pupils presented a fine program. Food and drinks were served and a goose drawing won by Alvin Hook. Proceeds totaled $50.
The Baptist Sunday school social was held November 14 at the church basement with hosts the Wilt and Carroll families. The program included music, a prayer by Rev. Gillespie, family numbers, a piano solo Leap Frog by Barbara Carroll, and a solo Jonah and the Whale by Rev. Gillespie. Guests enjoyed Humorous Challenge and refreshments for 34 attendees.
Mrs. Nettie Baker hosted a Thursday party at her home for her 84th birthday. Attending were Mr. and Mrs. Claude Grimm and family and Mr. and Mrs. Willis Stage. Cards and gifts were exchanged. Larry Grimm marked his fourth birthday in the same event.
Mr. and Mrs. Ralph McNamara and Mr. and Mrs. Earl Green with their families plan a weekend stay with Mr. and Mrs. Willard Welch in Elk Horn. Donald Green will leave Friday morning to visit the Welchs and return Sunday with his parents.
