Babson Park Massachusetts November 22 reading his weekly forecast Babson argues fish prices lead cotton and cattle markets. He notes cotton fell from 183 to 156 per bale and predicts further 50 percent declines before a permanent turn up. He also cites fur and luxury goods price pressure and potential Christmas clearance effects.
Mrs Grace Squires of Mt Carroll presented a world collection of shawls and fans at the Chadwick Woman’s Club meeting hosted by Mrs O H Rahn. The 45 members and guests enjoyed an instructive program. The next meeting on December 12 will feature Christmas gifts for Park Ridge school for girls.
Thomson Briefs Donna Holding of Coe College Cedar Rapids spends Thanksgiving with Mr and Mrs G A Smith and Margaret. Mr and Mrs Clarence Rhymer and Mr and Mrs Clark Rhymer of Morrison visited Chester Green home Sunday. Mrs James Rhodes of Kent UL visited Saturday with sister Mrs Carl Robinson.
Tillie V Turney 569 formerly of Carroll county died Tuesday Nov 26 at Savanna city hospital after major surgery. Born July 29 1887 at Lanark she married Robert A Turney and lived on farms near Chadwick. Survived by two sons Kyle and Guy three grandchildren a stepson Ted Turney a brother and three sisters and many local friends. Burial at Lanark cemetery followed services at Ideal church.
The Carroll County Clerk issued marriage licenses to James Morgan and Betty Toepfer, Robert Mover and Dorothy Trude, Merle Kohn and Naomi Hamm, Duane Sturtevant and Florence Artman, Charles Munson and Mary Ann Randall, Harry Shaw and Elsie Vornhoff. Two desertion grounds divorces were granted by Judge Leon A. Zick. Calvin Palfrey pleaded guilty to petty larceny and was referred to probation. Grand jurors recessed without indictments, to reconvene Tuesday.
Local residents and visitors had Sunday meals and chats with families across Chadwick and nearby towns. Notable names include the Handel Kaul and Morgan households, the Bailey, Harter, Miller, Bowles, and Cramer families, with travels linking Sabula Port Byron Delevan and Illinois.
Mr and Mrs Walter Queckboerner were surprised on their Silver Wedding Anniversary. A noon scramble dinner and a silver gift were given. Many relatives and friends attended the two gatherings, sharing refreshments and greetings for the couple in Morrison and Mt Carroll.
First Lieut Harry H Miller stationed at Fort Knox Ky has been appointed deputy by Carroll County Sheriff-elect Henry W Truninger He is the son of Mrs Truninger Miller plans to leave the army soon and live with the Truningers in the courthouse quarters Wilda Smith formerly of Mt Carroll is his wife Miller served over four years with 22 months in the south Pacific.
Junior beef entries in the International Livestock exposition at Chicago will be sifted by a committee on Friday, Nov. 29, to select calves for the show and judging on Saturday, Nov. 30. Calves screened out will be sold at auction Friday, Nov. 29. Vernon Fink, Chadwick Future Farmer, Arnold Sikkema Thomson Future Farmer, and Willis Sikkema and Howard Huggins Thomson 4-H club members will leave for the stock show by truck Wednesday.
A modest afternoon ceremony at the Cherry Grove Church of the Brethren on East Locust Street united Mildred Schubert of Tears City and Harold Larsen of Shannon in a double ring wedding conducted by Rev. Merle Hawbecker. The couple will reside at the Elm er farm in Cherry Grove township after a wedding trip. Guests included Aaron Hawbecker and Catherine Rowland of Polo.
Mr and Mrs John McVaughey of Macomb spent the weekend with her parents Mr and Mrs Wayne Ashby. Several relatives gathered in Moline for Mrs Bogarts birthday including Mr and Mrs Alfred Williams and Mr and Mrs Clayton Bogart. Joyce Marshall returned from Macomb to spend Thanksgiving with her parents. Mr and Mrs Robert Miller and daughter Janie Ann joined Sunday dinner with his parents Mr and Mrs Fred Miller. Martyn Faber hosted Arnold Tiesman of Fulton at the Faber home.
Col. Jerome D. Cambre, commander of the Savanna ordnance depot, says rumors of a future closing are untrue. The post is hiring for various divisions and has begun new functions since the war. Some labor curtailment occurred where production is unnecessary, with workers reassigned or released for those who refused reclassification.
Howard Schuchard joined Sunday dinner guests at Mr. and Mrs. Howard Kness. Afternoon callers included Mr. and Mrs. Wm Kness of Audubon Iowa Frank Knees and Mr. and Mrs. Roy Potter and family plus Paul Haywood. Mr. and Mrs. Ed Aude and daughter and Mrs. C F Hartman were Sunday afternoon callers at Herman Aude Sr. home.
Earl H. Shrier, 54, of Brodhead Wisconsin, former Morrison resident, died at St. Clair hospital Monroe after a self inflicted gunshot wound Friday night. Funeral services were held Monday at New Comer funeral home Brodhead with burial Greenwood Cemetery. He was born September 17 1892 in Fulton Illinois. He married Mildred Larson in Sterling June 1 1916 and lived on a Morrison area farm before moving to Spring Grove township near Brodhead in 1936. Survived by widow two sons Kenneth and Ronald and daughter Mrs Floyd Mallocok. He was a member of Modern Woodmen of America.
Chadwick high’s Silver Streaks and Lanark high cagers battled into two overtimes with Lanark edging Chadwick by one point after Chadwick had led late in the extra period. The game featured a confusing timekeeper and heavy foul calls, plus a 50 total fouls, with two players from each side fouling out. Box score note: Mrs. Chas Gordon Sr. visited Rock Falls.
The Victory International Live Stock Exposition and Horse Show at Chicago’s International Amphitheater reports a record surge in entries across 14 of 29 breeds, with notable rises in cattle, swine, and sheep. About 1,760 animals from 35 states and Canada have enrolled, 113 percent above the last pre war year. Illinois leads, followed by Iowa and Indiana, with youths from 13 states participating. Mr and Mrs John Cooper plan Thanksgiving dinner guests from Savanna, Hanover, and neighboring areas.
Fire swept the county farm on Tuesday morning destroying a barn. Local coverage notes a prior Mt Carroll loss and upcoming Friday game featuring the Silver Streaks aiming to rebound against Mt Carroll with Chadwick fans hoping for a home win.
The Chadwick and Thomson Future Farmers chapters will attend the International Exposition in Chicago from November 30 to December 7. They plan a December 4 trip by a 23 passenger bus, including tours of a meat packing plant, the Chicago Board of Trade, and the Union Stockyards, plus the big stock show. Fred Miller and Robert Hook lead Thomson, with Junior Brown and Joan Jansen guiding Chadwick.
Chadwick's fire department will soon be equipped with a second 500 gallon per minute pumper. The unit, mounted on skids and built for civil defense, costs 532 dollars paid from on hand funds. It includes 300 feet of 2 1 2 inch hose and 100 feet of 1 1 2 inch hose and can draw water from cisterns tanks streams or hydrants.
A Monday blaze at a Carroll County farm southwest of Mt. Carroll destroyed a 38 by 76 foot barn and shed, about 60 tons of hay, 10 tons of straw and 300 bushels of oats. An inmate Henry Reis is believed dead. Sheriff and county physician found bone fragments and suspect a human body in the ruins. Firefighters prevented spread to adjacent structures. cause undetermined. County insurance expected to cover most losses.
A string of visiting relatives from Port Byron Hinkley Morrison Mt Carroll Chadwick and Savanna gather at homes of Blair Lehade Dimmick Diehl and others. Plans include Thanksgiving with Heins Clinton Coon and Frietag in Elkhorn Wisconsin and San avana with Coon family.
Carroll County Council of the American Legion voted to give 25 dollars to a fund for gifts for Yanks who served. Chadwick Legion post, of which Oliver Etnyre is commander, donated 10 dollars. Other gifts from 1 to 5 dollars may be left with him or picked up. do not include candy or razor blades. Funds support hospitalized veterans.
My and Mrs William Baker hosted Sunday supper in Clinter Iowa with Mr and Mrs Donald Donahey and family. Mr and Mrs Joe Blair and Mary Robesdt fees and Agnes Clancey attended in Davenport. Donald Kauffman drove cattle to Chicago. Dean Boyce visited Ely Cochran family. Delbert Dimmick and John Dimmick planned Thanksgiving with Carthage kin. Ford Grimm family visited Orrin Pauly in Mt Carroll.
