Babson notes a tight pre holiday market with inventories running low across durable goods and toys while demand remains strong. He warns shoppers to buy early as leather, metal, and labor shortages strain supply, with furniture, radios, and household items hardest hit and postwar recovery uncertain.
Dr Derrer, a veterinarian from Preston Prairie, visited Wallace Williams's farm. Mrs Preston Downing visited the David Golby home in Freeport. Mr and Mrs Loomer Downing spent Nov 7 at their daughter Georgia's home, Henry Strub’s in Freeport. Mr and Mrs Conrad Leicher and family of Lanark joined Sunday dinner hosted by Mr and Mrs Joel Hoffman. Afternoon callers were Mr and Mrs Arthur Hoffman of Morrison.
The November term of Carroll County circuit court opens next Monday November 15 listing three new criminal cases four new common law cases and 13 new chancery cases with more filed after the docket. Judge Leon A. Zick of Oregon listed as presiding judge but Harry E Wheat of Freeport may take the bench.
George Schmaling of Argo-Fa reports a corn field spectacle shaped like V for Victory. While husking the 1943 crop he found two ears fused at the butts forming the sign. His daughter Esther Schmaling shared a photo at the Review office to illustrate the claim.
War Ration Books I and II will not be issued further in the Quad-Cities area. Stamp 18 in Book II remains valid for shoes, blue stamps X Y Z in Book II valid for processed foods through Nov. 20. Books I and II lose rationing value when stamps expire. new War Books III and IV replace them. Green stamps A B C in Book IV used for processed foods. Weekend guests and dinner visitors noted in local social items.
Members of the Carroll county board of supervisors held a routine meeting in the courthouse approving bills and transacting regular business. By Tuesday afternoon no marriage licenses had been issued in November by County Clerk W. M. Nipe. Front doors at the courthouse and annex were installed pending paint after better weather. deeds show transfers including Daniel M Airhart to Ascension Rever a and wife and others in Rock Creek and Savanna.
Carroll and French herd of 19 Holsteins tops Carroll county DHIA with 7.8 pounds butterfat and 948 pounds milk in October. Noordhoft and Peck’s 25 grade Holsteins rank second at 35 pounds fat and 930 milk, J. C. Bennett’s 8 Brown Swiss third at 33.4 fat and 916 milk. Buford Farms 23 Holsteins fourth with 31.8 fat and 822 milk. W. G. Warnock’s two Guernseys fifth at 31.5 fat and 613 milk. Association average 25.1 fat and 615 milk. 84 of 401 cows on test dry. High cow No. 90, a Carroll and French Holstein, 68.7 fat and 1634 milk.

Lloyd Heeren of Lanark will exhibit five Chester White barrows in the fat swine classes at the Chicago Market Fat Stock and Carrot Competition, to be held at Chicago Stock Yards November 29 through December 12. The event, replacing the International Live Stock Exposition cancelled since 1941, features junior 4H and FFA exhibitors ages 10 to 20 and adult classes across cattle, sheep, and hogs.
Two Savanna soldiers were wounded in action in Italy in early October. William L. Doty, 31, reported Oct. 1 with a gunshot wound above the right elbow, not serious, and he noted he is progressing. Sgt Doty recently earned the Silver Star. Pfc George Taylor, 20, was wounded Oct. 12, Dobey parents notified. he had been injured in Sicily July 19 and later received the Purple Heart.
Lanark hosts 38 Bast family members at a Sunday potluck honoring Ensign Vernon Bashaw and marking the birthdays of Mrs. Ed Bast and Mrs. Phineas Bashaw. Shannon High School announces a full boys basketball schedule with home and away dates from November through February. opponents include Alumni Leaf River Lena Chadwick Pearl City Thomson Mt. Carroll Lanark Freeport Milledgeville and Forreston with several contests at home and multiple tournaments.
Funeral services for August Kloepping 76 were held at Eben Ezer church near Pearl City with burial in the adjoining cemetery. He was born Oct 28 1867 in Freeport and farmed in Freedom township leaving four children and a wife who predeceased him. Also reported is the Sudden death of Joseph Merson Taylor 52 at his Savanna home. Funeral services were conducted in Savanna with burial in Savanna cemetery. He was born Feb 3 1891 in Woodland township married Bertha Ford in 1918 and survived by his wife two sons Charles and Lyle, a granddaughter and brother Robert.

Miss Esther Schmaling Miss Margaret Mueller and Miss Ruth Boy hosted a postnuptial shower for Mrs Richard Gifford the former Bernice Dambman last Thursday at the home of Mrs Elizabeth Senneff. Chadwick school faculty and Mrs Curtis Naniga attended. A white wool blanket was given to the honoree. Table decor and nut cups were pink and white with a miniature bride and groom centerpiece, the groom in army uniform.
Thomson reports Mr and Mrs Jackson Davis of Savanna were Sunday dinner and Monday overnight guests of Mr and Mrs Allen Witmer. The Davises plan to move to Dallas, Texas. Dick Brown led a group of Savanna boys to Chicago for a weekend trip that included a football game.

The Carroll County Dairy Herd Improvement Association will hold its annual meeting on Thursday evening November 18 at Farm Bureau Hall in Mt. Carroll. J. G. Cash of the University of Illinois will be the principal speaker. Annual officer elections will be conducted. The event was postponed from October due to Mr. Cash’s unavailability.
Calls for teachers from the Bureau of Appointments at Illinois State Normal University have more than doubled from 1940 to 1943, with 2,506 calls this year yet only 441 teachers placed in new positions. Dr. Carrington warns of a continuing acute shortage, especially for elementary grades, as 1944 prospects look very dark. New Carroll County placements include Harley W. Foster at Chadwick’s Community high school, Frances Keller at Mt. Carroll high school, and Ruth Spencer at Chadwick’s Community high school.
The Department of Conservation announces the pheasant season runs November 11 to 20 with a two bird daily bag and six in possession. Quail open November 11 and run to December 11 with a daily limit of 12 and 86 in possession after day three. Rabbit season also begins November 11 and ends June 31 with a ten rabbits daily and 20 in possession.
State Auditor Arthur C. Leuder reports October Aid to Dependent Children payments totaling 794,549 to 56,261 children. Carroll County paid 825 to 65 dependents. Whiteside County 2,721 to 201 dependents. October old age pensions totaled 4,231,914 with Carroll County paying 10,017 to 867 and Whiteside County 26,047 to 904.
At a Mt. Carroll meeting the Carroll county Republican central committee voted to continue not endorsing any candidate before primaries. It will endorse records of current Republican state office holders and Republicans from Illinois who hold national offices.
Ernest Green was transferred from White Memorial to the Lone Pine sanitarium at 2429 West Olympic Boulevard Los Angeles where he expects to leave in about three weeks. Mr and Mrs Bill Jenkins and sons of Morrison Mr and Mrs Ralph Olds of Clinton and Miss Carol Olds of Iowa City visited Mrs Anna Jenkins for Sunday afternoon and supper. Mr and Mrs Richard Badtke attended Zion Lutheran churchs 60th anniversary in Clinton and later supper with William Bier and family.
Mrs. M. Lawler spent the early part of last week at the farm home of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Brown Sr. on route 80 south of Savanna. She traveled from Chicago where she visited her son Howard and his family, then planned a visit in Minneapolis before returning to Auburn Washington. Miss Mildred Withhart of Savanna left Wednesday for WAVES service at Hunter College New York City, escorted to Chicago by her parents Mr. and Mrs. Fred C. Withhart and brother John Withhart seaman second class at Farragut Idaho.
