Babson argues that world peace will arise from three spheres of influence led by the United States Britain and Russia within fifty to one hundred years. he cautions against overreliance on democracy and urges investments in land and productive enterprise while promoting traditional work ethic. Navy Recruiter to Visit Savanna Post Office

A Rock Island recruiter will be at the Savanna Illinois post office on November 11 1943 at 1 p m to interview men for the U S Navy and the Naval Reserve and women for the WAVES. WAVES require 20 plus two years of high school while 17 year old young men may enlist. Applicants should bring birth or baptismal certificates and a parental consent note. Men 38 to 50 with special skills may join the Naval Reserve.

Livestock Truckers to Meet in Mt Carroll

A meeting of Carroll county livestock truckers and the vestee transportation committee is set for eight o clock Friday evening Nov 5 at the Triple A office in Mt Carroll. The purpose is to discuss livestock transportation with representatives of the Office of Defense Transportation. Either Mr Sumner or Robert Buford will attend and will relay suggestions to the area committee on improving winter livestock movement.

Many Complaints Of Damage Here On Hallowe'en

Sheriff Eber Shepherd investigated Hallowe'en vandalism in Chadwick and surrounding townships. Youths allegedly overturned outbuildings at rural schools and damaged mail boxes along the Chadwick to Mt. Carroll route. The Chadwick schoolhouse was entered and toilet paper rolled along roads. Some youths reportedly admitted involvement.

Halloween Parties and Social Gatherings Across Argo Area

Mrs. Elmer Hook and Mrs. John Gaar hosted a costume ball Friday night at Hook home with bingo and a luncheon. Out of town guests included Miss Kaye Reno and Jerry Van Kampen of Chicago Heights. The Hallowe'en party at Argo church annex drew many neighbors with cocoa and sandwiches. Notices include Mr. and Mrs. N. R. Kenyon returning from California after pruning 250,000 pounds of prunes on David Jones ranch. Ease Eligibility Expanded for Pressure Cookers

Arman Daehler says county war board widened eligibility for pressure cookers for home use. The change lets more buyers obtain cookers this winter and for next year’s preservation efforts as victory aims rise by two million over 1943. No highway deaths in Carroll county during October. Whiteside county reported one death, bringing its toll to six for the first ten months. Carroll’s toll to date remains at five.

Farm Machinery Permits Issued This Week

Farm machinery permits were issued Oct 25 to Oct 30 by the county farm machinery rationing committee. Authorized items include tractors for Virgil E. Bushman and Judson Grove, corn pickers for Orville G. Larson, corn shellers for Ernest Handel and Glenn G. Bickelhaupt, portable elevators for Bert Wirtje and J. C. Brandenburg, and milk cans for R. S. Wiley and Wilhelm G. Traum.

Coyne and McKnett Married in Savanna Oath

Miss Corrine Coyne of Savanna and Sergeant Thomas M. McKnett of the Savanna ordnance depot wed in a single ring ceremony at the Boothby home in Savanna. 85 guests attended the reception. They plan to live at the ordnance depot civilian housing.

Three year old Preston Prairie Charles Owen Bickelhaupt noted on Nov 2. Morris Kipnis visited recently. A special youth service was held at Center Hill church on Sunday evening Oct 31. Saturday callers to Mrs Maude Alexander included Mr and Mrs Chester Alexander and Mr and Mrs Clarence Hartman.

Attorney Turnbaugh, Longtime Carroll County Lawyer, Dies

John B Turnbaugh 71 of Mt Carroll died Oct 29 after weeks of illness. Funeral held Oct 31 at Christian Funeral Home Mt Carroll with burial Oak Hill. He practiced law in the county 50 years and served as state representative and state senator. He was master in chancery and county judge and belonged to Masons Eastern Star and I O O F. He was born May 22 1872 in Fair Haven township. Survived by widow Alice Wildey daughter Emily and several siblings.

United War Fund Drive Opens November 11

The county's United War Fund campaign starts November 11 with a quota of 16 200 or more. It supports the National War Fund and 16 agencies aiding countries attacked by Axis forces and funds USO centers near armed forces. USO operates 150 units in the western hemisphere with 10 000 volunteers providing about 80 000 hours monthly. Residents are urged to contribute generously to cover these services.

Darrell Holman Kicked By Horse Injures Face

Darrell Holman suffered severe facial injuries after a horse kicked him in the mouth while he tried to guide two horses back into a yard. He lost four upper teeth and sustained a fractured jaw arch during the incident at his home Friday evening. Carroll county entries add youth exhibitors to Chicago market show

Three farm youths and Donna Sturtz of Lanark enter the Chicago Fat Stock and Carrot Competition at the Chicago Stock Yards November 20 to December 2. Donald Zier’s Angus calf was Carroll county show grand champion this year. In Chadwick, residents vote November 6 on purchasing a superintendent residence with bonds up to 4500 dollars.

Farm program talks set for two county meetings

County officials and Triple A leaders will meet Thursday in Mt. Carroll to discuss the 1944 farm program. A second session will follow on Monday for further Triple A committee discussion and to plan community and county Triple A elections set for December 3 and 4.

Carroll county rationing board members note that those who did not obtain War Ration Book No 4 at registration may still apply by mail. Eligible individuals unable to register for book 4 can request the necessary forms, complete them and return with book 3 to the board office. If book 3 is unavailable, the board will provide forms to apply for book 2.
