The secretary of war announced that the new Canada to Alaska highway is open to traffic with trucks already moving supplies along the 1670 mile route. Tax changes loom as cigarette and beer taxes rise and the 1942 income tax payment deadline approaches in March.
State Auditor Arthur C. Lueder reports Carroll county October OAA payments to 420 people totaling 10,780 dollars with 41 warrants for aid to dependent children. Whiteside county OAA payments reach 25,296 dollars for 934 recipients and Rock Island 1,714 recipients receive 44,000 dollars. ADC payments: Whiteside 2,671 dollars and Rock Island 5,504 dollars.
Preston Prairie Stanley Birdsall was a Wednesday visitor. Merle Kingery's daughter is home from the hospital. Charles Owen Bickelhaupt is two years old as of November 2. Mr and Mrs David Goldy of Freeport were here Sunday.

Mildred Bowers of Clinton visits her brother Charles and sister Margaret. Fred Hook and party dined with Eric Marske family in Clinton. Chadwick guests included Dick Andreson family. Fulton residents James Skipper and Eugene Skipper visited Bernie Dykstra home. Robert Herridty of Clinton and Dwight Atherton of the U S Navy were weekend visitors with local relatives.
Two Carroll county men ordered to report to the Chicago induction center were told at the last minute not to travel after telegraphic instructions delayed farm workers' induction. A war manpower board ruling extended to all selective service boards, upsetting next week’s quota. Local boards warn the blanket exemption may continue while it does not allow farmers to rush to avoid the draft.
Registration for the nationwide gasoline rationing program has been postponed to November 12 14 and 14 with the program becoming effective November 22 No changes to the start date remain. Local ration boards and volunteers will run registration in schools as plans stand.
The regular Carroll county civilian defense council meeting is postponed this week. Sheriff Ray Westfall says the meeting will be held Friday evening November 13 in Mt. Carroll.
Durand Eaton son of Mr and Mrs Ralph Eaton of Mt Carroll has been notified of acceptance as a cadet in the United States army air corps. He underwent his physical examination in Chicago several weeks ago and will be told soon where to report for induction.
J C Bennett’s herd of 7 Brown Swiss dairy cattle led Carroll County DHIA in October with an average of 830 pounds of milk and 35 pounds of butterfat. all cows were lactating. Noordhoff and Peck 25 grade Holsteins averaged 887 pounds of milk and 32.9 fat. Carroll and French 21 registered Herefords averaged 770 pounds of milk and 21.1 fat. Holland Pratt herd 15 grade Holsteins and Guernseys posted 770 pounds milk and 31.5 fat, while W G Warnock’s three registered Guernseys averaged 595 pounds milk and 27.83 fat.
Joseph Rath, a Savanna farm youth, will display a purebred Shorthorn steer at the Chicago Market Fat Stock and Carrot competition at the Chicago stock yards on December 25, among Carroll county exhibitors in the junior classes.
Sunday callers at the Chas. Hogg home included Mr. and Mrs. Edward Kinyon and sons from Burlington. Mr. and Mrs. Henry Swantz and daughter Rachael from Hanover were guests in the home of their cousin, Mrs. Roy Heitman and family.
Mrs. Charles Rogers 64 of Woodland township died Oct. 28 in a Chicago hospital after short illness. Funeral in Cicero with burial at Woodlawn Joliet. born Clara Burkhardt Oct. 12 1878 Grundy County. survived by husband two daughters four grandchildren and one great grandchild. Shannon mourns 74 year old Mrs George H Ewing who died Nov. 3 at daughter’s home in Friend Ned. service in Sharman funeral home with burial in Brethren Cemetery Shannon. Belle Jinn born 1869 England came to Rockford age 15. married G Jree H Ewing Nov. 15 1894. survived by husband a son Corp Francis J Ewing Camp Swift Tex and three daughters in Grand Island Neb Portland Ore and Kreig.
New farm machinery and equipment, except repair parts, were frozen on November 1 under Temporary Rationing Order B. Quotas for the year starting November 1 are limited to 20 percent of 1940 production. Emergency needs will be handled by county committees until quotas are set. Dealers and manufacturers must report inventories as of October 31. The order shifts production from large firms to small producers.
Kerr Caldwell a Savanna policeman was arrested and arraigned before Justice of the Peace Frank Schroeppel in Mt. Carroll on a charge of assault and battery. The charge comes from an incident alleged to have occurred last Friday in Savanna. Bond was set at 300 dollars and he was released on his own recognizance as the case continued to Thursday. Francis Sheridan and his wife of Rockford visited the Lynn Curley home from Friday to Tuesday. he is set to travel to Chicago soon for army duty exams.
Pvt. Louis P. Kradle of Chadwick Illinois reports to the Armored Force Replacement Training Center at Fort Knox Kentucky to start a 12 week program. The first six weeks cover fundamentals of soldiering and army organization. The second half offers specialty tracks in tanks scouting mortars machine guns reconnaissance and more.
Grover Reddington was named to complete the term of William Fisher, who served 22 years as Shannon township supervisor before resigning due to ill health. Reddington assumed duties at the start of the month, while Fisher often attended meetings under harsh conditions and never missed or was late previously.
Carrell county farms transportation committee reports aiding in completing over 250 application forms for truck certificates of necessity. Some owners have not yet received blanks, but once available they can obtain help at the Triple-A office in Mt. Carroll or from committee members.
Clarence Cambman of Lanark, a stock man, shipped two head of prime beef cattle sold in Chicago midweek at $17 per cwt. Each animal weighed about 1245 pounds. Prices at Chicago on October 28 reached yearly peaks with full loads at $17.35 and a part load at $17.40 per cwt.
G A Reinert, 31, sustained a serious leg wound Friday when a 410 gauge shotgun discharged at his Mt Carroll residence. He received emergency care from a local physician and was moved to Savanna hospital. He said he was preparing to clean the gun when it fired. Reinert works on civilian construction at the Great Lakes naval training station and planned a hunting trip for Saturday.
Alfred J. Geise man confirmed by the United States senate as postmaster at Shannon. Miss Harriett Brown returns home after several weeks in West Chicago at the Wm Starck home.
Incumbent Orion M. Grove was reelected as county judge with 4512 votes to W. G. Kent’s 1051. County Clerk W. B. Watson led 4524 to 1021 over Fred Holloway. Frank L. Ross won treasurer 46564 to 928 over W. Poffenberger. Eber D. Shepherd unopposed for sheriff with 4800. Lawrence B. Bradi reelected school superintendent 4774. State reps Savanna’s Franklin A. Stransky and Galena’s John Bing ham led in the county. Republican gains reflected statewide with heavy turnout and strong margins.
Farm Adviser M. P. Roske announces a countywide rat control campaign starting this month. Farmers are urged to secure poisoned rat bait at 35 cents for two packages through the Farm Bureau, enough for an ordinary farm. The bait is harmless to other animals.
Mr. and Mrs. Robert Gelwicks and children of Milledgeville were Sunday dinner guests at the Robert Carroll home. Miss Georgia Hogg in training at Jane Lamb hospital spent time with her parents. Earl Roggendorf and family will move to Iowa this fall to farm for R. S. Blake. Mrs. Blanche Beck arrived home from a trip visiting Lynwood California relatives in Portland Oregon and Walla Walla Washington.
