The essay notes that next year Thanksgiving will revert to the traditional last Thursday in November. It credits President Roosevelt with admitting prior changes were wrong and argues this restores a religious holiday from commercialization. Robert Adams aged 82 of Lanark was acquitted in Kane County Circuit Court of murder in the death of James Williams a 16 year old inmate at St Charles school for boys. Williams died after a beating in a punishment cottage. Adams claimed self defense saying Williams threatened him with a chair and knee struck him in the abdomen.
Frank A. Herbert, driver of a car owned by Thomas Ballas of Savanna, was critically injured when the vehicle skidded on gravel at a curve on the Lincoln highway seven miles east of Sterling and struck an eastbound North Western bus. Also injured were two Iowa girls, while the bus driver and passengers escaped unharmed.
About 30 000 bushels of sealed corn held for the Commodity Credit Corporation were sold in Carroll County over ten days. Farmers with cribs also sold their sealed corn after settling loans. Sealed corn from Shannon and Mt Carroll bins, each about 2000 bushels, sold at 66 cents per bushel to reimburse the CCC.
Federal health officials propose a Savanna defense area package including sanitation and hospital construction totaling 652000 and 50000 for recreation facilities as part of a broader 150 million dollar push for community facilities. Taft lists emergency priority projects with A B and C ratings and Savanna shows water, sewage, hospital and health center needs.
Mt Carroll 4 H stock judging team won with 777.3 points in the county fat stock contest held on several farms near Mt Carroll. Milledgeville placed second with 770.4 points, while Lanark East End 742.8 and Lanark West End 725 followed. High scorer was Charles Guenzler of Mt Carroll with 264.1. Allen Heisler and Lyle Law tied for second with 263.1. Richard Zuck of Lanark had 260.7, and Jack Newton of Milledgeville had 258.5.
The first 13th district board meeting of Federated Women’s Clubs convened last Thursday at Franklin Grove Methodist Church with 70 members from six counties. New district officers and chairmen were announced, and plans outlined for the year including education, music, law observance, and new departments, with dates set for upcoming meetings and the spring convention at Rock Falls.
Carroll county cattle topped the Chicago Stock Yards sale last week. Don Asay and his 18 head Herefords averaging 1250 pounds led Tuesday at 11.25 per cwt, while T Miller of Lanark sent 19 head averaging 1257 pounds on Wednesday at 11.80 per cwt. Both lots were bought by the New York Butchers.
Ninety eight students in Carroll county rural schools received eighth grade diplomas at Mt. Carroll High School with L. E. Bruch presenting. The county superintendent noted this is the smallest rural class in six years. Commencement speaker was Rev. T. Stuart Cleworth.
Mt Carroll school shutters five lower grades for a midweek break due to a measles outbreak. Health Officer Isenhart reports over 100 absentees, five from the grade school, with high school finals disrupted. If the outbreak slows, graduation exercises may proceed next week as planned.
Two Mount Carroll students Jeanette Hostetter and Margorie Robbe were elected editor and business manager respectively of The Record at Frances Shimer Junior College. The vote, announced at a Thursday dinner in McKee Hall, also names Harriet Oxley Patricia Welch Kay Johnson Marie Armstrong Ann McKnight Betty Gillett Beverly Erleson and Frances Holgren in various staff roles.

Dr Allen T Lockwood a Mt Carroll dentist reported Monday for duty at Great Lakes naval training near Chicago He came from Chicago five years ago to open an Mt Carroll office and holds a commission as lieutenant in the dental corps US Navy Dr and Mrs Lockwood expect to reside near the training station
Three Carroll county safety patrol members Michael Cravatta Edward Loeser and Marilyn Radke of Savanna will attend a week at a Chicago Motor Club sponsored camp with all expenses paid They were selected for exemplary work during the 1940 41 school year This is the second year of the program and buses will transport the campers.
