Storm Leaves Widespread Damage Across Chadwick Area
A severe wind and rain storm last Thursday night caused thousands in damage. Winds near 70 mph felled trees, wrecked silos and barns, shattered greenhouse glass, and damaged Chadwick school facilities. Homes and farms reported extensive destruction while telephone and electric lines were down for hours. repair crews labored from 3 AM Friday through Saturday.

Emmerson Memorial Farm Floral contest entry date extended

Savanna cafe owner killed in restaurant murder suicide
Mrs. Peggy Finley 40, operator of a Savanna cafe near the Milwaukee station, was found dead May 15 from a gunshot to the head at 11 a.m. A coroner's jury, after hearing testimony at Mt. Carroll, said Charles Irwin 56 of Mt. Carroll shot Finley and then shot himself. The note was found on a menu. Irwin was taken to Savanna hospital, not conscious. Witnesses testified Finley and Irwin were seen in the cafe and in her rear bedroom before the shots.

Joseph E. Foltz, 40, of Savanna, was bound over to a federal grand jury on a charge of stealing government property after an arraignment in Freeport. Bond of 10,000 was posted by his father, Edward Foltz, and Foltz was jailed briefly before release. He faces accusations tied to explosives stolen from the Savanna Ordnance Depot and an extortion plot against his father, with later statements indicating he sought to use TNT booster charges but could not go through with self harm.

Herefords From Lotzbaugh Farm Hit Top At $12.35
Carroll county cattle traded at the extreme top with 20 Herefords averaging 1263 pounds selling at 12.35 per hundredweight. The Lotzbaugh consignment from Lanark sold straight at the day's top price. Hog prices jumped to 9.25 per cwt with an average of 9.15 per cwt the highest since March 1938, up 15 cents from last week and well above a year ago.

Purebred Holsteins led the Carroll county DHIA in April with 1310 pounds of milk and 41.5 pounds of butterfat for the Derrer herd led by John Derrer. The top producing cow gave 2610 pounds of milk and 101.8 pounds of butterfat, outpacing the next by about 1000 pounds of milk and 17.8 pounds of fat.

Sheriff Ray Westfall was called Saturday night to probe a rock barricade across a country road east of the CCC camp at Mt Carroll. Bert Yoehem reported the obstacle, saying he passed by by swerving.
