Sixteen men began Tuesday to check performances of Carroll county farmers in the 1941 agriculture program after receiving instructions at a Mt. Carroll AAA office school. William Wesley Dodson 52 was found in his Savanna kitchen after his wife returned from a cafe shift. A shower hose connected to a gas burner caused carbon monoxide poisoning, ruled self-administered in a personal crisis by a coroner's jury. He previously ran a tavern in the area and is survived by Ella, a son Robert E. Dodson, a granddaughter, and a sister.
Five people escape injury when a car driven by Glen Metz Chadwick crashes into a car driven by Charles Bashaw Mt Carroll as Bashaw turns into Spencer Henderson farm driveway on highway 52 three miles west of Mt Carroll. Metz and Bashaw report the other vehicle cut across the road. Sheriff Ray Westfall investigates and a Chadwick wrecker removes Metz car. Drivers fail to slow despite flares and signals.
Carroll county four of seven eligible wheat growers voted in favor of wheat marketing quotas in a Saturday referendum. Across the wheat region eligible voters showed strong support for quotas, paving the way for nationwide quota implementation.
Under a new law signed by Gov. Dwight Green, Carroll county superintendent Lawrence E. Brudi loses 300 dollars per year. Illinois county school superintendents face pay cuts after the 1940 census showed population declines, reducing salaries based on the 1930 census.
Four Carroll county students will graduate as nearly 2,400 candidates receive degrees at the University of Illinois commencement on Monday June 9 in George Huff Gym. Dr Arthur Cutts Willard will address graduates while Dean Sperry speaks at the baccalaureate. The event will be broadcast on WILL 580. The Illini Union will host many related activities and a first alumni school of affairs is planned for June 5 and 6.
Carroll county draft board announced a June quota of 27 men to report for one year of U S Army training in Chicago. Induction date set for June 20 with 2068 registered. Questionnaires will continue at about 100 weekly to classify remaining registrants and new 21 year olds by July 1.
By June 2 Carroll County had collected about 385 127.05 of the 663 888.29 1940 tax bill. Personal property taxes and first real estate installments were overdue and subject to a one percent monthly penalty. Two distributions of tax funds had been made with a third planned this week. township-by-township collection figures were listed.
Ray Bousum of Polo files a $20,000 personal injury suit in Oregon County Circuit Court over an April 17 collision on Polo Mill Edgeville Road 3.5 miles west of Polo. The action names Everett Hardesty of Milledgeville as the driver of the other vehicle and cites failure to exercise proper highway care. Bousum, the driver, was hospitalized in Dixon for over a week.
Five people were injured when two cars collided on highway 52 about five miles west of Mt Carroll Sunday afternoon. Driver F J Petersen Jr of Clinton and Lester Barron of Chicago were in the vehicles. Petersen suffered cuts to the face, Miss Jeanne Gabriel had minor cuts, Mrs Barron suffered a badly cut tongue and was taken to Savanna. Her husband and their 19 month old son escaped with minor injuries. Both cars were badly damaged.
About four to five thousand spectators from northern Illinois and nearby states attended the Mt Carroll Horsemen's association second annual show at Glengary farm west of Mt Carroll. Judge Patrick OConnell led events with Mary Holt as chairwoman as crowds voted by applause in the stock horse class.
Three people died in highway crashes in six northwestern Illinois counties during May raising the year to date toll to 11. Lee and Ogle report 5 and 2 deaths respectively this year, Stephenson 2, Whiteside 1, Carroll and Jo Daviess 0. The county federation of Women’s Clubs meeting was postponed due to rain.

Frances Shimer college at Mount Carroll will erect equip and run a riding stable for students. The 104 foot long building will have 10 box stalls seven tie stalls a lounge terrace tack room and upstairs trainer apartment. Stable to be completed before the September session and instruction will be managed by a trained staff.
Old age assistance recipients in Carroll county during May numbered 441, with total payments of 9,566. Statewide figures reached 145,885 recipients and 3,350,243 dollars in payments, per Arthur C. Leuder, state auditor of public accounts.

Carroll county cattle led Wednesday trading at the Chicago stock yards last week as Paul and John Bott of Milledgeville sold 22 prime beeves averaging 1183 pounds each. They moved stock at $12.75 per hundredweight, the top price for weights.
