London Ontario police seize ignition keys left in unattended cars and return them to owners with notes where to retrieve them. The plan aims to deter theft by showing motorists the ease of removing keys from parked vehicles.
A record for the first air mail dispatch from Car Roll County reports 41 pounds sent by plane. The event marks an early aviation milestone with a notable postal delivery experiment.
Air mail pickup in Carroll county marks the first such county shipment. Plane No 20100 piloted by Don Henley collected mail from all offices, arriving Milledgeville at 2 45 p m May 19 and departing at 3 p m. Milledgeville sent 219 pieces weighing 9 pounds. Other offices reported smaller totals. Mail was dispatched to many states and foreign destinations.
The U. S. Grant Council Camporee finished in Freeport with Freeport troop No. 3 winning. Monroe 101 placed second, Lena 91 third, Freeport 1 fourth, Freeport No. 14 fifth among thirteen troops. Weather threatened but 1200 fans watched Friday events in the high school stadium. Leading contenders were Monroe 101, Galena No. 1, and Freeport 3.
Boy Scout officials report strong local interest in improving the 148 acre camp. They seek support to build a Camp Hospital with estimated cost about 360 dollars and list other improvements including water, lake, roads, tents, and cots. Circulars with project details are available from Scout Headquarters in Freeport.
With June first near, Carroll County reports only 210,491.14 collected by May 23. Personal property taxes and half of real estate taxes are due by June 1 to avoid a 1 percent monthly penalty, with township payments ranging from Washington at 5,044.50 to Savanna at 43,848.15 and Mt. Carroll at 35,903.39.

Heavy rainfall in Minnesota and Wisconsin pushed the Mississippi River at Savanna to just over 14 feet at noon Saturday, the highest level in two years. Flooding swept bottomlands along the upper river, damaging crops and inundating farmland near Savanna and eastward along Highway 80. The river was reported to be falling Monday but northern rains threatened another rise.
The Carroll County Tuberculosis Association approved its 1937 38 financial report showing a balance of 625.24 as of March 24 1938. Proceeds from the 1937 Christmas seal sale totaled 380.30 with district contributions and school receipts itemized. Funds were held in Mount Carroll and Savanna banks with total assets 1016.69.
Two Carroll County men Harley Raatz of Lanark and Oley Pearson of Carroll were jailed in Carroll Iowa after attempting to rob the Meshek farm ten miles south of Carroll. Pearson who once worked for Meshek and Raatz slept in the barn and returned with a masked plier threat. Mrs Meshek resisted and alerted help. Authorities say they expect a stiff sentence in Iowa courts.
Dwight Fickes held in county jail on a $500 bond charged with driving while intoxicated after his car collided with a vehicle driven by Miss Marjorie Tomman of Chadwick. Both drivers escaped serious injury though shaken. Fickes’ car was badly damaged.

The Merry Circle club held its May breakfast at the Koffee Kup in Mt. Carroll last Friday. Mrs. Clarence Van Buskirk led as toastmistress, with talks on The Club and Friendship, plus Vision. Thelma Livengood and Richard Bates of Lanark performed accordion and xylophone numbers.
Delbert Wentz of Lanark is charged with uttering a fraudulent check for $12.60 in a county court information filed last week. Bond set at $500 was posted and he was released. A hearing will be scheduled for a later date.
Mt Carroll takes the county track title with Chadwick finishing second. Mt Carroll also wins an 880 yard relay event.
Chadwick wins the Mt Carroll track meet with 50 points at Point Rock Park Mt Carroll. Milledgeville takes second with 20 12 points Lanark third 27 Shannon fifth 4 Thomson last 12. Emnyre stars in sprints and Chadwick relay wins 880 yard relay. Grade meet results follow with Chadwick leading 27 1 3 points Mt Carroll 18 1 2 Shannon 17 1 3 points.
A large group gathers at Sterling to discuss federal control and agricultural policy. Participants voice concerns over regulation and seek coordinated action to influence federal policy.
About 1 800 Whiteside County farmers gathered in Sterling Illinois to oppose government control of agriculture. They adopted a resolution condemning crop allotments and the U S Department of Agriculture policy as a threat to farmer liberty and pledging to resist compulsory features. A copy was to be sent to the President, the Secretary of Agriculture, and local congressional delegation.
Carroll county high schools prepare for commencement over the next days with baccalaureate services this Sunday. Shannon closes, Thomsen York Community marks graduation with 10 seniors, Chadwick 19 graduates. Lanark Mt Carroll Milledgeville Savanna plan June 1–3 ceremonies.
