A resident recalls a devastating cyclone that hit Carroll County on May 18 1898. The storm scorched the Sand Ridge area from Tate County along the Mississippi River, destroying Kesler farm and damaging other homesteads, with deaths reported at the Kesler and Bower households. Route 80 paving advances with one mile completed and open from Thompson to the Lew Stark corner south of Mt Carroll. Detours via bluffs, new dirt pad on east and west roads, paving through sand hills, gumbo and sand dunes challenge crews. Completion eyed for the Fourth of July.

About 150 scouts from Carroll County gathered at Point Rock Park in Mt Carroll for a Mystery Rally and Round-Up. Clayton M. Chatters led the event. judges included B. L. Peck Don Chisholm and A. L. Kreider. Winners were Lanark for team, with Mt Carroll and Savanna close behind in multiple events. The Mt Carroll troop prepared a noted mullig en stew under Charles Hartman.
The 500 club met Thursday with Mrs Mayme Maommeri honored as cards arrived. First place went to Mrs Hortense Mipe and second to Mrs Roy, with attendees including Mrs Vern Kauffessa at the meeting room.
