Byron's auctioneer and philosopher ends in suicide

The Tri County Press reports Byron figure Eli McNames, famed auctioneer and folk philosopher, wrote a grim note on hardship before taking his life. He cites debts, taxes, and mortgage pressure on his little farm, lamenting lost earnings and failed investments. Picnic and baseball win for eighth grade at Clinton Park

The eighth grade and faculty enjoyed a Saturday picnic at Eagle Point Park Clinton. A noon picnic dinner preceded an afternoon show while Sandridge school beat the total grade 11 to 8 at the focal ball diamond on Tuesday.

Local clubs meet and plan activities across Peoria district

Johnson of Peoria district deputy and Mrs Etta Ohiweiler of Rock Island spent Tuesday with Oracle Maude Sears and Recorder Iva Orcut. The district deputy attends a practice meeting at the focal hall to drill officers. The 500 Club met at Mrs Vern Kauffman’s home with luncheon and honors for Mrs Fred Nipe, Mrs Roy Houghton, and Roberta Lewis. The club plans to meet June 2 at Mrs Wil Helms’s home. The Thimble, Ractic and Thread Society met in the Church of Christ annex to quilt, with hosts Mrs Ernest Whitney and Mrs John Hoy. The Eastern Stars chapter meets at the local lodge ball this evening.

Bible school time moved up to 9 30 Sundays

The church announces a June 5 start for Bible school at 9 30 each Sunday with services ending about 11 20. Attendance on May 22 reached 92 and is urged to repeat and attract absentees as summer approaches, plus a child day program on June 5 and a wine roast planned for May 31 with a church youth group.

Paul Lewis received a supply of poppies from the Legion in Savanna to be sold in Thomson this Saturday. The sale aids disabled veterans and their families, with proceeds used for service and relief work. A Web Theatre complimentary ticket and a state Legion citation are offered for contributors.
