A long critiquedenounces chain letters and chance games as scams that fleeced the public. It notes reports from Davenport Clinton and Freeport of rising schemes, cites government inaction, and warns earnings prove ruin for many who seek easy money while stressing the lasting risk to needy households.
A Milledgeville Knox home suffered a serious fire caused by soot on Thursday. Authorities investigated the blaze as residents reported extensive smoke damage and possible equipment failure. No injuries were reported, and fire crews remained on scene to monitor hotspots.
Distributions totaling 5980.92 went to Carcell county school districts from the state aid fund for the 1934 school year. County Superintendent Martha Ashby mailed checks to township treasurers for the March and April allotments. Townships listed include Washington, Woodland, Freedom, Cherry Grove, Shannon, Lima, Rock Creek, Salem, Mt. Carroll, Savanna, York, Fair Haven, Wysox, Elkhorn Grove, and others with amounts shown. A second Carroll county distribution totaled 84575.00, with 79550.00 distributed earlier. Fifteen thousand dollars went to the general fund. Townships received varied sums. Will of Henry Talisman of Lanark filed. hearing set May 21. The Merry Sewers 4-7 club reports a fire at a home on May 1 near Mile over the last ideal church. no injuries. Mothers urged to attend the finery meeting hosted by Grace Seim and Izeta Rawlins.
Mt Carroll high school earned fifth place in the sectional contest with a grand score of 6829 as Lanark took third with 6969 in a regional judging event held at the Rawleigh Ideal farms near Freeport. Amboy led with 7197 and Ashton followed at 7045 while Lanark placed second in fat stock and dairy with Mt Carroll twelfth and Milledgeville eighteenth.
Warren Meyers aged 57 died at his home Thursday evening from scarlet fever. Funeral services were held Saturday in Mt. Carroll with burial in Mt. Carroll Cemetery. Survived by wife, two daughters Mrs. Handel of Mt. Carroll and Mrs. Clancy of Chicago, two sons Ren and Leele, sister Mrs. Delly Metz, and brother Guy, all of Mt. Carroll. Rev. T. D. Leatherman of Lanark United Brethren Church conducted the service.
Dan Cupid helps Mt Carroll board hire two new teachers for next fall Miss Emily Turnbaugh will replace Miss Slick in first grade and Mrs Alice Coleman Greve will replace Miss Sack in fifth grade both veterans in Mt Carroll education Mrs Greve has eleven years in the Mt Carroll fifth grade and will resume teaching there while Miss Turnbaugh recently studied at Evanston and taught in Grand Rapids this school year Other teachers and staff are listed including Superintendent F F Grove and department heads across grades and subjects.
Mt Carroll High School racked up 64 points to Lanark 52 and Shannon 25 last week as Wilson swept the 100 and 220 yard dashes and the broad jump while Fritz took the 880 yard run and the mile. Relays and field events showed Mt Carroll strength with strong showings from Fritz, Wilson, and teammates across sprints, distance, and field events.
Thirteen county deaths were recorded in April with Savanna reporting the most. Mt Carroll leads in births, while Lanerk Te Mr and Mrs Caries J Bacaer announce a daughter named Beleres Heien born April 12. Other April death notices include Savanna residents Ella Bradley Florence Irene Lambert Mary E Rattlett and Margaret Chrissman Parkinson with dates in April.

County agrees to form a county softball league under Chadwick Review sponsorship with reps from Chadwick Mt Carroll Lanark Daggets Savannah Milledgeville and others set to attend. The meeting May 21 at 7 30 pm in Chadwick Review office aims to draft rules draw up a schedule and possibly select a league director to standardize play and boost county wide competition.
Lanark village adopts ordinance 333 requiring licenses issued by the mayor for beer and liquor sales. Classes set: A for beer up to 4 percent for on premise, B for drug stores in original packages, C for on premise liquor. Fees: A 73 dollars, B 325 dollars, C 300 dollars. Licenses expire April 30. Sales banned between midnight and 6 am and on Sundays.
Carroll County's Farm Bureau baseball team will play the Central Oilers of Rock Island at Cook's field Sunday May 19 at 2 p.m. On Decoration Day the Farm Bureau team will face Freeport at Cook's field at 2 p.m.
E B Payne Cherry Grove township assessor was first in the county to file the completed assessment book with the county treasurer. In Cherry Grove, 1935 real estate valuations reached 806740, down from 843910 in 1934. Personal property valuations were 92730 versus 924130 in 1934.

Carroll County wheat growers will meet at Mt Carroll this Thursday to discuss the present wheat situation and a proposed government adjustment. Rudolph Holhburg and Vernon Todd, county committee, will run the meeting with ballots to vote on carrying out the program.
Mt Carroll High School agricultural class under Prof Warnock’s instruction earned fourth in a nationwide contest by Ifeard's Dairymen of Ft. Atkinson Wisconsin. Judges used the picture method. Freshmen Robert Hall won Junior champion and the top $25 prize plus a plaque, and Robert Neu schwanger won $20 in prizes.
Dog owners in Savanna must license their dogs and keep them at home after Clarence Wurster was named special patrolman and dog catcher. Licensed dogs will be kept in city pounds at South 4th Street and South Street for three days, and owners may be fined if their dogs are picked up.

Savanna veterans of foreign wars will stage their annual poppy sale under Shaw- Leavens post Saturday, May 18. Proceeds fund relief and welfare projects for veterans. One cent from each poppy goes to the National Home. Savanna post uses the rest. Committee includes Virgil Schumaker, G A Scherman, Arthur Jones, and several ladies.
Farm prices show a 24 point year over year rise per M F Roske from the Illinois University College of Agriculture and the U S Bureau of Agricultural Economics. April saw price advances for 28 farm products, 11 down and tes unchanged, with hogs and corn among notable gains as feed grain stocks tighten and wholesale bread prices firm.
