Savanna and Morrison plan parallel Fourth of July events at their fair grounds with Soldiers and Sailors Reunion in Savanna July 3 and 4 and Morrison hosting a July 4 program at the Fair Grounds. Activities include races, softball, a greased pole contest, a buggy event, and large fireworks display, with a dance to finish the day.
A Saturday morning blaze on the John L. Morris farm five miles north of Milledgeville destroyed the Willis Pape home. Neighbors saved most furniture and clothing while the Papes moved to a nearby house on the adjoining Morris farm. The cause is undetermined but sparks from the chimney are suspected.
County towns form the Carroll County Softball League at Chadwick Tuesday to set rules and a ten game schedule for the county championship. Moderators Lane Watson and Dultsworth named. six teams Daggets Mt Carroll Milledgeville Chadwick Savanna Lanark. play Fridays at 8:30, each town supplies flights balls and three umpires, no outside players allowed.
The Carroll County treasurer Frank Ross reports total current year taxes paid by May 14 amount to 235,504.81 dollars, representing 41.38 percent of levy. Townships contributing include Washington 4,873.66, Woodland 6,823.23, Freedom 7,348.89, Cherry Grove 9,082.81, Shannon 9,137.64, Lima 7,103.83, Treck Creek 24,392.83, Salem 14,060.34, Mt. Carroll 35,317.28, Savanna 50,811.19, York 16,912.72, Fair Haven 21,949.77, Wysox 23,143.19, and Kishorn Grove 7,599.76.
County superintendent Martha J. Ashby says the average teacher pay across the county will rise by about 10 to 15 percent next year, roughly $10 more per month per teacher, as many districts have hired staff with contracts finalized though some reports are not yet in.

Rev Nesbitt of Mt Carroll is Methodist pastor. Rev Kindell of Milledgeville is Brethren pastor.
The Mt Carrol and Savanna areas report several more dog poisonings bringing the total to about six. Mrs. Gus Gag son of Savanna offers a $50 reward for information on who poisoned her dog while it was tied up at the O Neal grocery on Bowen Street Tuesday around 6:45 p.m.
The Northwestern Illinois Utilities at Savanna published Mt. Carroll water pumping rates. The five year plan sets two and a half cents per kilowatt and ten year at one and nine tenths cents per kilowatt. Mt. Carroll has paid $300 to $400 monthly. the electricity contract with the utility expires in 1937.
About 180 members attended the Blackhawk Counties Council of the Veterans of Foreign Wars gathering in Savanna on Sunday. An interesting program afternoon and evening included dinner and luncheon being served.
Robert Voller of Savant Satin sues merchant and undertaker as administrator of the estate at Mes. Hammersmith oil Savanna to collect 2766.12 as a preferred claim against the closed Savanna Commercial State Bank. The circuit court heard the case before Judge Warry Edwards, with John L. Brearton for the claimant and Robert Bracken of Dixon for the bank’s receiver.
Large classes from COUNTRY SCHOOLS gathered for graduation exercises at Mt Carroll and Chadwick Tuesday and Wednesday nights. Martha J. Ashby, county superintendent, led the program with graduates listed including Neva Hartman March and Mary Williams. The May 1935 cohort used the motto Were Climbing Higher with Lily of the Valley as their flower and pink and white as colors.
William Anton was shot five times in a domestic dispute turned deadly at Savanna’s old ball park district near the Elmwood Casino. John Garcia, a Mexican man, surrendered to police and was jailed. coroner’s inquest blamed Garcia as the unlawful slayer.
A county softball league series of ten games was announced with town selections from city league players. Each town will form its county team with a manager, playing a schedule from June to August, excluding the Fourth of July week.
Mt Carroll Community Club hosts a Friday evening dance at the Mt Carroll Community House. Proceeds benefit the mik fund and other charitable emergencies.
