The Iowa State Medical society heard a New York physician urge patients to eat a large steak dinner immediately after tonsil removal. The item notes skepticism based on personal experience.
Two Lanark women Mrs. Georg Nonemaker age 54 and Miss Alta Myers age 19 were killed in a kitchen explosion at the Nonemaker farm south of Lanark cemetery. A kerosene can with a blown bottom suggested attempted oil pouring caused the blast. Mrs Nonemaker and Miss Myers died likely instantly as flames spread. Mr Nonemaker returned from a trip, smothered flames with rags, and sustained severe burns to his hands. Coroner Joseph B. Schreiter ordered the bodies to Speers funeral home for an inquest set for Wednesday night.
The county liquor commissioner issued licenses at 450 dollars each to William E. Kretz and T Lawrence Schunder for the year. Their taverns along route 80 north of Savanna will be the only places in the county outside cities to sell both beer and hard liquor under the new law. Two beer only licenses may be issued but James Mummert and Charles E. Smith did not renew by Tuesday evening. The Fuhreman Canning Co reports its pea crop sown in including late peas with favorable weather and tractor work advancing.
The Farm Bureau district baseball league for Carroll Ogle and Winnebago counties begins Saturday June 1. Carroll games are at Lanark Ogle at Mt Morris and Winnebago at Rockford with a June schedule ending July 6 and the district winner advancing to the state meet August 30 31 at Champaign.
A Mt Carroll meeting of the 4 H Federation discussed forming a county federation of 4 H clubs. The Wednesday night session focused on whether to organize the umbrella group and coordinate countywide activities.

Waldrip 60 longtime Savanna superintendent died at home after a long illness He resigned due to health surfacing in fall Funeral services were held at Fuller funeral home Rev T Stuart Cleworth officiated and burial was in Savanna cemetery He was born Feb 16 1880 near Attica Ind and had served as superintendent in Streator Ill before Savanna His survivors include daughter Martha Borber son William Jr brother Cliff Waldrip and sister Mrs E J Brown His wife Alice Harvey died in 1935
The Williamson seven cow Holstein herd led April’s county dairy group with 1297 pounds of milk and 49.7 pounds of butterfat. John Derrer and son followed with 1315 pounds of milk and 43.8 fat, Rush Carroll dropped to third with 1014 milk and 40.4 fat. Edson Holland and Ralph Fahrney rounded out the top five with 873 and 1021 pounds milk respectively. High producers included a Stransdale Farm No 1 Holstein at 1986 milk and 79.4 fat and Charles Hogg grade Holstein at 1785 milk and 78.5 fat. Seventy-three cows produced 40 pounds or more butterfat in April.
Preston Prairie reports Mrs G F Bickelhaupt arrived home Wednesday from the winter stay with her son Earl in Clinton. Other items note a Thursday charivari for Iowa newlyweds Albert Garland and his wife and a May 4 daughter birth to Mr and Mrs Paul Metz. Elsa Buckwalter cares for Mrs Albert Petty. Will Hartman works for Wallace Williams. Wayne Hockman works on the Howard Petty farm.
Mt. Carroll high school dominated a meet at Point Rock Park defeating Stockton 90 to 9. Carroll swept first in all events, while Stockton earned two seconds and six thirds in the discus 60 yard dash 100 yard dash 220 yard dash pole vault mile and shot put.
About 420 voices in massed choruses and 250 in massed bands will perform at Carroll High School’s second annual festival on Friday May 17. Participating county schools include Chadwick Lanark Milledgeville Mt Carroll Shannon and Savanna. Conductors Spencer Green Illinois Wesleyan University and Russell Harvey Chicago lead the evening concert at 8 00 with an afternoon program at 2 30 conducted by each school. Admission 25 cents for adults 15 cents for students with one ticket granting access to both concerts.
A load of crappies and bass was released into Daggetts pond west of Chadwick on route 78 on Saturday under Game Warden Thomas Hand. The fish came from the Mississippi River. The state department of conservation reportedly released 60 grouse in the county where feed and cover are available.
Frances Shimer junior college students in Mt. Carroll rehearse a May fete to be presented Saturday afternoon May 18 under Miss Mildred Jaynes. More than 75 students from Chadwick Milledgeville and beyond participate in dances from celebrated stories with Jeanne Gavin of Kohler Wis as May queen and a large cast performing themes from Alice in Wonderland Peter Pan Mother Goose Wizard of Oz Hansel and Gretel and A Midsummer Night's Dream.
About 150 people gathered in Mt. Carroll Friday to hear a cattle feeding survey summary. A Chicago Producers Association representative outlined mid western prospects from recent surveys. The county 4-H girls leaders school instruction date moved from May 7 to May 15.

Preliminary census figures show Chadwick up 23 since 1930 reaching 574, Lanark up 72 to 1280, and Milledgeville down 20 to 787. Milledgeville residents doubt the tally and call for a recheck by the census supervisor.
The Mt Carroll Horsemen's Association prepares for a May 26 show at the Campbell farm west of the city with a new riding ring and a Shakespeare of trophies donated by local clubs and individuals. Henry Lyons of Springfield acts as judge. Sheriff Ray Westfall assists in investigating the Thomson filling station robbery.
The Carroll theatre in Mt Carroll debuts tonight in the renovated Hartman garage building. Anthony Potoenik will manage, Lenida Holy will serve as cashier, and Deanna Durbin stars in It's A Date as the grand opening feature.
