Twelve rural Carroll county schools hire instructors for the 1940 41 school year. One district plans eight months, seven eight and a half months, two nine months, and one nine 20 day months. The Honberger district will not operate and transport to Chadwick grade school. Names of teachers and terms listed for districts including Woodland South Elkhorn Daggetts Preston Prairie Plum Grove Center Hill North Otter Creek Locust Grove Walker Olive Sage Fairview.
Carroll county’s relief fund allotment for May totals 21 dollars. IERC released allocations for neighboring counties include Whiteside 303 dollars. Ogle 2268 dollars. Jo Daviess 1184 dollars. Stephenson 6386 dollars.
Mrs Elva Cobley and her daughter, both of South Minneapolis, escaped with minor injuries when their car slid off route 80 north of Savanna after passing a truck. Rain made the highway slippery. the vehicle skidded, rolled onto its top in a ditch near the Indian Head roadhouse. They were treated at Savanna hospital. car badly damaged.
Clubwomen from six northwestern Illinois counties gather in Mill edgeville next Thursday May 9 for the 42nd annual convention of the Thirteenth District of the Illinois Federation of Women's Clubs. Sessions start 9:30 a m at the Brethren church with an executive board banquet May 8.
Carroll county farmers can earn soil building payments under the 1940 AAA program with two new practices. Sod waterways in fields with intertilled crops earn 75 cents per 300 linear feet, and up to six dams in waterways or gullies yield 1.50 dollars per set. All dams and waterways must be operational by October 1, 1940. Farmers should consult their AAA committeeman for details.
Ysaias Espinosa, 44, Savanna, is jailed on a $5,000 bond awaiting grand jury action after a Saturday hearing before Justice of the Peace R. Ward on a morals charge involving his 17-year-old daughter. A string of local property deeds follows, naming transfers in Woodland, Milledgeville, Chadwick, Freedom, Lanark, Savanna, and other areas.
Ben St. Clair and Floyd Hartman of Chadwick were fined five dollars plus costs each after appearing before Justice Frank Schroeppel on charges of disorderly conduct and disturbing the peace. The complaint was filed by Chadwick marshal Julius Bickert after a trouble late Saturday night. The defendants paid fines and costs and were released at the end of the hearing.
Preliminary census figures released by Freeport district supervisor Mrs. Douglas Grant show Mount Carroll’s population rising from 1,775 in 1930 to 1,843, a gain of 68. Shannon declines from 575 to 559. Other cities and villages in the county had not yet reported.
A total of 8115 in old age assistance payments was paid last month to 447 recipients in Carroll county per the April report by county welfare superintendent Miss Mary Schaut. Applications were received from eight persons. seven approved and grants made, four new and three reimagined. Eight cases closed in April including four by death and two transfers to another county. Circuit court session set for Mt Carroll on May ?. Judge Leon A. Zick to preside.
The Mississippi Palisades state park and Savanna city parks opened for the 1940 season with no major improvements. Improvements include a new 51 foot steel flag pole, a planned Miller estate entrance change, improved parking for about 1,000 cars, repaired picnic tables, fire places, look-outs, and shelter houses. Trails and bridle paths inspected, road work planned, new equipment and a concession stand authorized, and signposts set along Route 80. Old Mill and Marquette parks also open May 1 with cleaning, repairs, and new and existing caretakers listed.
Auto accidents since January 1 in six northwestern Illinois counties have caused 12 fatalities. Five deaths occurred in Lee and Ogle counties this year, Stephenson counties tally two, while Carroll Whiteside and Jo Daviess reported no fatalities through April 1940.
The D. A. R. meets Monday afternoon at the home of Mrs. D. Wolfe in Savannah with Mrs. W. Feldwisch of Milledgeville as guest speaker. Her topic is Weaving.

Mrs. KE C Pratt of Mt Carroll died at four AM Monday in Lincoln Nebraska where she had gone for a visit. She was a friend to many in Carroll county and widow of E C Pratt who died in June 1958 after running a hardware business and later serving as president of Mt Carroll Mutual Fire Insurance. Funeral Thursday at Mt Carroll Frank Bros Chapel at 10 AM with interment in Lower York Cemetery Thomson.
The county awarded E. F. Gallagher of Oregon Wisconsin the gravel road contract north from Milledgeville through Wysox and Rock Creek townships on Route 52 with a bid of 45959.68, the lowest of 15 bids. A bridge contract went to Fred Kaney of Forreston for 6987.55. Work should begin soon though grading cannot start until culverts are installed, and the ten mile route will connect Milledgeville to Route 52 near Lanark.
