Eureka Kansas April 30. Babson argues liberty with justice and mercy under law defines the American Way. He contrasts it with communism and socialism and cites wage and living standards to show American life rewards effort and freedom more than other systems. Barbara Ann Kness visited the Mackeys in Brookville.
Savanna man Savanna Bailey, 40, suffered critical injuries in an April 30 auto crash on Route 64 near Center Hill, five miles east of Savanna. He sustained a fractured skull and jaw, and lost most of his teeth. the vehicle was driven by Clarence Arno, 30, who was arrested for driving while intoxicated and bound over to the grand jury after posting $500 bond.
A surge of obituaries and fatality notices from Savanna and nearby towns reports 14 year old Carroll Eaves injured in a car bicycle collision near Savanna and dying in Savanna hospital. Also listed are funeral notices for Orrin Pulford 74 and Fred Day 48 with survivors and service details. Lanark sees the death of Mrs Frank Ditworth 57 with funeral at the Church of the Brethren and burial in Hickory Grove.
The Illinois Merit System Council seeks applicants for Visitor I and Casework Supervisor in 101 downstate counties. Requirements include one year of residence in Illinois and four years of recent full time work in a professional or business role. Salary ranges: Visitor I $145 to $190 monthly. Casework Supervisor $200 to $250. Applications by May 22, 1948, at state offices or Springfield Merit System Office.
A Ford Model A two door sedan was badly damaged Sunday when it crashed into a cement culvert abutment on Route 5 just south of Salem town hall. No injuries were reported. State police traced the license to Frank Eberhart Sr. of Sterling. Mr and Mrs Leland Forth and family joined the Forths of Morrison for Sunday dinner.
Carroll county rural schools will hold eighth grade commencement at 8 p.m. May 31 in the M. Carroll high school building. About 70 students are expected to receive diplomas.
Examinations for scholarships to the University of Illinois will be held within the exe week at the office of the county superintendent of schools. The county is entitled to three scholarships each year: one in Home Economics, one in Agriculture, and one general scholarship. Each state representative is allowed one general scholarship. Mr and Mrs Kenneth Burch of Rockford were Sunday dinner guests at the home of Mr and Mrs Joe Weber.
Licenses to wed issued to David C. Grimm and Marjorie Reents of Sterling and to Robert David Zink and Sue de Jane Green of Savanna. Several charges dismissed including Harte Diggins and son Stu-4 Diggins. Paul Rath fined for assault in Mt. Carroll. Manslaughter trial for Colby Loechel likely in June. individuals bound over or remanded. Various property transfers and estate matters listed for Mt. Carroll, Savanna, Chadwick, and surrounding townships.
A Unit District election is set for May 15 in the Milledgeville area to decide if a community district will be established. Voters in most of Wroox township and surrounding Whiteside territory are asked to approve a white residents of the district. Local officials report polling places have been arranged and several local residents are listed as attendees or hosts.
Winners in the Thomson Post American Legion essay contest are pictured with Sylvia Dykstra Roberta Williams John Murray and David Murray. Medals were awarded and essays advance to district and state contests.

Savanna hosts three wedding ceremonies. Green and Zink wed at a Savanna home with justice Charles Fisher officiating. Marian Wires and Lawrence Zink marry in Carmache Indiana. Marjorie Reent and David Grimm wed at Woodland U B church Mt Carroll.
Fire destroyed a horse barn, corn crib, two small buildings, and damaged a garage at the Franklin Corners farm owned by Mrs. Carl Hammer of Morison. Fire discovered about 2 p.m. by Irion youth prompting aid from Chadwick and Morrison departments. Horses and cattle saved, some grain saved, oats, corn, hay lost. chickens perished. Insurance partially covers the loss.

The account notes his April 14 1865 assassination at Ford's Theatre and a posthumous tribute.
Mr and Mrs Harold Schneider hosted guests from Lanark and Sterling on Sunday night. Mrs William Rister stayed with the Quest family in Sterling while Roy Hartman returned to Plainfield after a death in his family. The Remreys and Regina Beckmire visited relatives. John Most of Riverview spent Monday in Chadwick.
