Eureka Kansas April 23 Babson assesses crop outlook as farmers plan larger acreages in 1948 hoping for bumper yields. Wheat could reach 1.11 billion bushels, corn near 3 billion, oats about 1.376 billion. Weather remains the key risk and prices may drift lower despite strong domestic demand and 90 percent parity support.
Miss Mildred Jaynes announces the seventh annual Frances Shimer junior college horse show to be held Sunday May 23 at Glengarry Farm Stables west of Mt Carroll. The event features local riders and showcasing equestrian skills at a regional venue.
The annual spring outlook meeting on marketing for Carroll county livestock producers will convene at 8 p m on Friday April 30 in Farm Bureau hall Mt Carroll. Farm Adviser M P Roeke notes the gathering aims to outline market trends and guidance for producers in the region.

Joyce Zier piano and Mona Newcomer Hammond organ present a graduating recital on Thursday May 6 at 7 50 p m from Lanark. Solo works include Bach Niemann Ravel Khatchaturian and organ pieces by Bach Guilmant Rimsky Korsakov and Jongen. The final group features three piano organ duets and the public is invited.
Thomson notes Mr and Mrs W H Frank of Lanark were guests Sunday in the Roy Houghton home. Dr and Mrs Marvin Brookstra of Fulton were Sunday evening dinner guests of Mrs Adeline Gro haring.
The Illinois Rural Chorus calls all adults and high school students to join at a county organization meeting on Tuesday May 4 at 8 00 pm in the Farm Bureau Hall Mt Carroll. The group plans appearances at the State Fair Springfield the Sports Festival at the University of Illinois and the Canadian National Exhibition in Toronto with a sight seeing trip planned to the East.

A motor caravan of Gypsies, about 17 vehicles, camping near the river north of Thomson, was escorted from the county Saturday night by local deputy sheriffs. The caravan was met at the line by Whiteside county officials and escorted through the west end of the county to the Rock Island line.
Mrs Vernon McGinty re entered the sanitary on March 17 and underwent first stage of surgery on April 25 with Lucille and grandson Gary visiting in Ottawa. Vernon traveled from Bridgeport to be with her and planned to stay until May 1 before returning for a second stage around May 15.

Lanark high thinclads dominated Mt. Carroll 98 to 20 at Point Rock Park, winning all but one event. Neill Weber led the 110 yd high hurdles with 10.6 seconds, and Lutz tallied in the 100 and 440 dashes with teammates placing behind him. Multiple Lanark athletes swept relays, jumps, and field events, including Miller and Downing in the pole vault and shot put respectively, as Lanark secured a decisive victory.
Chadwick high school dominated Mt Carroll 67 to 61 in a Mt Carroll dual meet, taking first in six events plus the 880 yard relay and a broad jump sweep. Notable finishes included Neis and Gifford for Mt Carroll in sprints, and Chadwick’s Wagner, Frederick, Moothart, and Decker contributing across relays and field events.
About 44 high schools from Eastern Illinois Western Iowa and southern Wisconsin will compete in the annual Gateway Classic on Sunday afternoon and evening at Clinton held at a city venue.
Five counties including Carroll Cas Henderson Mason and White will participate in a watermelons taste test of Black Diamond seeds. The Chicago Burlington and Quincy railroad must appear before the Illinois Commerce Commission to show just cause for discontinuing trains 51 and 52 between Savanna Illinois and St. Louis Missouri without permission. The commission refused to let the railroad discontinue the trains and dismissed its petition. A new hearing is set for May 4 before the commission.
Two Clinton men Henry Hosp 53 and William Conley 41 drowned Sunday night north of Dam 15 in the Mississippi during a squall. Four men were fishing near Elk River when their boat capsized. two others Vernon Fick and Earl Hyde survived by clinging to a half submerged stump for four hours. Hosp’s body was found Monday afternoon. Conley’s body remained missing Tuesday noon.
Don Buyers opens a new farm implement store on the east edge of Mt. Carroll acting as the Ford tractors Dearborn and Wood Bros dealer for Carroll County. A new building is ready and Byers will handle repairs on Ford equipment and other farm machinery. Buyers previously worked with the Sterling Ford dealer.

A fire four miles southwest of Milledgeville last Wednesday afternoon destroyed a cattle barn, hog house, corn crib, calf shed, and storage of hay and grain on the J. L. Richardson farm. Total loss estimated at thirty dollars. home and outbuildings saved. insurance coverage noted. Farm owned by Mrs. E V McGrath, daughter of the Richardson couple.
A Carroll County Bankers Federation meeting at Lanark on Friday night April 23 heard FBI agent George Reimers discuss bank robbery methods and response plans. New officers elected include B. J. Clikeman as president, Richard McNett as vice president, and C. S. Rahn as secretary treasurer.
Middle States Telephone Co installs a 15 watt standby generator at Savanna to prevent service interruptions during power failures. A six cylinder gasoline engine drives the unit and remote control starts it. An emergency transfer ensures the exchange powers automatically switch from the grid. A similar unit will be added to Mount Carroll later.

At a northern district meeting in Dixon Monday supervisors and county commissioners including Lee Shaver Elk Horn Grove Elmer H Zugsch werdt Fair Haven and O M Bloyer Rock Creek attended to discuss various problems facing county governments and plan actions. Ward Olson of Davenport Iowa was a weekend guest at the home of his parents Mr and Mrs Fred Olson.
A state wide fly control program in Carroll County gains support from Farm Bureau directors and city mayors as University of Illinois and Health History department partners push eradication. Surveys show fly control raises dairy production by 15 percent and beef cattle gains about 60 pounds per animal. Clean up debris and apply DDT as directed to curb the pest.
Lanark track squad finished fourth among fifteen schools at the Fulton Relays held under lights last Friday. Lanark earned points behind Fulton 634% DeWitt 56 and Enes 4%. The Freshman Sophomore Relay team earned a trophy. Trophies awarded for each relay and for the meet. ribbons for individual contestants.
Mrs Richard Badtke attended niece Gertie Jessen and Earl Petersons wedding in Clinton Saturday. Visitors included Mrs Stella Bourns of Chicago, Mrs Clarence Appel and Vernon, and other neighbors at Louis Steinmei ers White Pigeon home. Sunday picnic guests were Mr and Mrs Vaughn Gaar and sons, Mr and Mrs Delbert Gaar and sons of Mr Carroll, and Mr and Mrs Johnnie Smolek Jr of Savanna. Freeport shoppers were Elmer and Fred Hook on Tuesday. Ben Stage joined Thursday dinner with Kenneth Kemmer.

Mr. Carroll charged with larceny. H H Diggins and his son Stuart K Diggins of Savanna were caught in Dallas and to be returned to Carroll county.
