Illinois Boards Reclassify Fathers to 1-A Amid War Shortages
Illinois local boards assign fathers to 1-A if in non-deferrable occupations, regardless of children ages. Col. Armstong notes dependency claims are removed and manpower must fill critical quotas. Married men with children born before Sept 15 1942 may lose NLA consideration if serving in deferrable roles. Local boards act to maximize available manpower for war effort.

Induction Policy Emphasizes Non-Deferrable Roles in War Effort
The article explains selective service aims to induct single men first, then those with collateral dependents, then married men with wives, and finally men with children. Group 4 status is a temporary delay, not deferment, and local boards may draw from all groups to meet calls. It notes registrants in non-deferrable occupations are prioritized to support war needs.
