Babson warns wage earners and union members that after World War II a severe wage and employment crash will follow. He cites 1929 parallels, predicts millions unemployed, argues higher current wages worsen the downturn, and urges caution against political wage promises and government-led interventions.
Regular and supplemental panels of the Carrell county grand jury for the June term of circuit court were appointed Tuesday by the county board. Names listed include Washington Kenneth Nesbitt and supplemental panel members such as Harold Handel and Lloyd Law with multiple jurors from towns like Woodland, Freedom, Cherry Grove, Shannon, Lima, Rock Creek, Salem, Savanna, York, Fair Haven, Wysox, Elkhorn Grove, Mt. Carroll and others.
Delegates and officials from surrounding Woman's clubs attend the 13th district Illinois Federation convention at Amboy First Congregational church. The program covers registration, songs, salute to the flag, speeches by district and federation leaders, committee reports, luncheons, a motion picture, awards, and a banquet with music and tributes to past presidents. Sunday dinner guests include the Bast and Hines families.
The OPA increased the maximum monthly mileage for occupational driving to 720 miles, enabling salesmen and others to obtain up to about 40 gallons per month. Applicants must prove need for work travel, share rides when possible, and ensure they are not already using 720 miles for home to work. Local boards had not yet received official notice.
War Ration Book No. 8 will be issued by mail in late June or early July and no registration center visits will be needed. Blanks for applying for book 3 will be mailed May 20 to June 5 and returned to OPA with information to issue the new book. Book 3 will replace book one and two and contain unit stamps for coffee and sugar and point stamps for foods now under book two.
Rep F Stransky and Rep Henry White sponsor bills to refund 25 percent of state sales tax to counties. On an Aurora radio broadcast they expect about 16 million dollars annual savings for homeowners farmers and businesses if enacted. County levies would drop by the refunded amount due to legal limits on total levies.
Carroll county War Board chairman Herman Dachler says limited tractor tires are released for civilian use. Farmers with two or more farms may request tire and tube permits from the U S C A War Board. Applications for pressure cookers are being received at the AAA office in Mt. Caroll. women must prove need and fill out forms distributed by the Carroll County farm machinery rationing committee at 121 1 2 West Market Street.
The county board of supervisors adopts a resolution opposing war saving time and urges the legislature to switch to sun time to aid farmers. It notes Iowa and Illinois Governor Green receive copies, arguing earlier hours hinder field work and harvest timing due to dew and dampness.
Two Carstensen Freight lines semis overturned near Palisades State Park after a Chevrolet coach collided with the lead truck. Henry Sherlock of Savanna faced reckless driving charges. all drivers escaped with minor injuries. Traffic rerouted. investigations by military police and highway patrol. Bond set at 500 dollars. case continued to April 28.

The OPA announced on a Saturday that motorists with rationing above 240 gallons monthly may qualify for grade one tires. Holders of Tra fiana and rationed drivers gain eligibility for better quotas if tires are available. Manufacture of victory tires from reclaimed rubber halted March 1. reclaimed rubber now goes to recaps and retreads.
Easter weekend saw calm weather with early morning clouds, then Monday afternoon brought heavy thundershowers that lasted past midnight. By Tuesday morning skies cleared, though a chilly breeze lingered. Gravel roads improved but sinkholes persist and motorists should pick routes carefully. Mississippi River level dropped four to five feet from the high mark with Plum River at Savannah back within its banks. lowlands still hold pools of water.
Miss Mary Etta Wilson and John Arthur Host were married in Grand Rapids in a Westminster church ceremony with Attendants Jane Sartwell and Sgt. Robert Cunningham. The Bride, from Catlin and Savanna, works at Savanna ordnance depot. Groom teaches meteorology at Grand Rapids aviation school. Engagements announced for Vivian Marie Stiles and Clarence L. Priebe, to marry June 4 in Dixon. Delores Marie Weaver wed Corp. John Vincent in Savanna with attendees and family present. Vincent to report to San Antonio. Wilma Joyce Bodie married Sgt. Harold K. Rain in Mt. Carroll with Attendants Helen Groezinger, Mrs. Drain, and Harlan Bodie. Rain serves with Marine air corps at Great Falls.
Charles E Kingery was reelected unanimously to serve another term as chairman of the Carroll county board of supervisors at the annual organization meeting. He enters his third consecutive term and announced committee appointments for 1943 including finance official salaries and accounts and county highway. Delegates to the county officers convention in Chicago May 5 6 and 7 were named Kingery Blower Sheridan and Shaver.
Savanna high school tracksters defeated Mt. Carroll high 80 to 57 in a midweek dual meet at Savanna Athletic Field. Savanna captured firsts in ten of 13 events and tied for first in another.
Miss Mildred Pierce sixteen suffered second and third degree burns to both legs after a gas line sprayed fuel from a collided model A Ford on Route 80 south of Hanover. She also had a deep chin wound and facial abrasions. The Ford occupants were treated at Savanna hospital and released. the other driver fled the scene.
East Moline editor Harold Harper named district director for the Illinois Iowa Quad Cities OPA by regional head Raymond McKeough. The span covers Carrol Whiteside Rock Island along with Daviess counties and nearby border areas. Harper has 23 years as publisher and editor of The Herald Press and has served as Illinois state senator and on state labor and commerce panels.
