Thomson Community Unit District hires five new teachers for 1969 70

Superintendent Howard L Kennedy announced the addition of five new teachers to the Thomson Community Unit School District for the 1969 70 term. Florence Pennington will teach vocal in the music department. Alan Pickens will handle Ag I and II shop and science courses. Dennis Emnyre joins biology science and coaching duties. Michael Highland will teach French and World History. Terry Noble will teach junior high language arts and U S History and assist with baseball and track.

County Students Observe Law Day

Seventy Carroll County high school students visited courthouse offices on May 1 as part of the annual County Government Day. Students elected during the week of April 21 took oaths in the County Superintendent’s office and heard addresses by Ralph Eaton and William Petty among others. The American Legion sponsored luncheon at the Masonic Hall.

School Announces Graduation Dates for East Aurora

East Aurora Illinois schools announce awards day May 22 with 8th graders and parents invited to orientation that evening. Eighth grade graduation May 28 and high school graduation May 29 with Andrew Hook as guest speaker. Superintendent Kennedy notes 1–7 finished SRA tests and 8 and 10 will take ITED tests this week.

Birthday Party Honors Mrs. Vada Carroll

Mr. and Mrs. Eldon Hickey hosted a Monday evening birthday party honoring Mrs. Vada Carroll on her birthday April 25. Guests included Mr. and Mrs. Arlyn Huizenga and family of Fulton. A call came from her grandson and wife Mr. and Mrs. Alan Hickey of Severn Maryland on her birthday.

Hospital Patients and Transfers Around East Moline Area

The Sick Mrs. Bernie Dykstra fell at East Moline Hospital last Wednesday and broke her hip. Mercy Hospital Clinton admitted Mrs. Jake Baker on Sunday evening as a medical patient. Glenn Kreuder was admitted to Morrison hospital as a medical patient on Thursday morning April 24. Mrs. Roger Eslinger was discharged from St. Josephs Joliet after knee surgery. Frank Reiss returned home from Jane Lamb hospital where he was a medical patient. Mrs. Geneva Ditsworth of Savanna is a surgical patient in Savanna City hospital and is mother of Mrs. John Sour, a former Thomson resident. Mrs. Earle Mailand was a patient in Jane Lamb hospital. Mrs. Mervin Marshall was admitted to Mercy hospital Monday as a medical patient. The local fire department assisted in transporting a patient having breathing difficulties to the hospital.

Thompson Cub Scouts Award Night Highlights Ceremony

Thomson Cub Scouts held a family potluck dinner and awards ceremony in the high school cafeteria. Robert H. Hill led the program with guests Superintendent Howard Kennedy and family. Awards included Bobcat pins to eight scouts and Webelos activity badges with multiple recipients. Den mothers are being recruited for next year with May 15 registration.

Fires chase grass along railroad right of way near Milwaukee

Fires spread about 19 miles along the railroad right of way after noon today. First call came at 12 50 p m at the south edge of the Village with two miles of blaze on the west side of the tracks. High winds and dry grass hampered firefighters backed by three trucks and multiple crews including help from Savanna and Kyle Brown farm area.

Industry Taking Labor Survey In Carroll County

A new small industry may locate in Carroll County likely Savanna to tap local labor for Metro Rubber Products, with expansion to Argo Fay. Up to 25 workers, mostly male, are possible if labor supply is adequate. A training program will be offered but hires from existing local industry are not planned.

County Youth Rate At Judging Contest

Joe Haas of the Mt Carroll FFA Chapter led the 1900 4.11 and FFA Livestock Judging Contest on April 26 with 417 points of 450. Thompson farmer Jay Newendyke dies suddenly at 55

Jay H. Newendyke of rural Thomson died Wednesday afternoon likely from a heart attack while farming. Funeral services will be Saturday at Ebenezer Reformed Church Morrison with visitation Friday at Tomlinson Funeral Home Morrison. He was born April 5 1914 and married Louise Juist in Fulton in 1942. He is survived by his wife daughter Sharon Appel grandson Randy four sisters and was preceded by a son Ronald and infant twin granddaughters. He served on Rest Haven Nursing Home board and in Ebenezer Church Consistory. A memorial fund is set.

Protesters fined for during Democratic National Convention

Chicago City Magistrate Dwight McKay fined 27 people up to 500 dollars each for interfering with police after last Augusts Democratic National Convention. Among those fined were former Yale professor Staughton Lynd and Rev. Don Moon, a Shimer College counselor. Moon and Mrs Lynd led a draft counseling clinic in Mount Carroll March 28 and 29.

Fire crews extinguish blaze on pole and cabin in Thomson area

The Thomson fire department answered a Saturday afternoon call at Mrs. Vada Carroll’s property to a fire in a light pole started from a small building. About 5 45 a m Wednesday they extinguished a cigarette caused mattress fire in a former Spring Lake cabin five miles north of Thomson on route 84.

The Thomson Chapter of the Future Homemakers of America met April 24 for their March meeting with dinner. Cheryl Hook presided as president and reports from secretary and treasurer were approved. Members set May 30 for the Alumni banquet and welcomed Freshmen initiates with pins. The 1969 70 officers were elected with Hook to serve a second term and includes Kaufman, Bellich, Rooseerary, Fehler, Bruckner, Bush, Knuth, and Schmitt.

Auxiliary selects nominating committee in April meeting

At the April meeting the American Legion auxiliary named a nominating committee with Mrs. Allen French as chairman and Mrs. Gene French and Mrs. Wilbur Reader as members. Court Assesses Heavy Fines In DUI Cases This Week

Two Savanna cases resulted in hefty fines for operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated. Michael Shalifee, 23, was fined 150 dollars plus costs and lost his license after an April 12 citation. Joseph Randall, 18, received 310 dollars plus costs following a plea of guilty to multiple charges including driving under the influence and possession by a minor.
