Babson analyzes postwar real estate prospects, noting limited vacant city land gains, suburban demand rising, and potential inflation effects. He predicts no city or farm boom immediately after the war unless a severe inflation scare occurs around 1950 to 1955.
Major Wayne King of Savanna led the Army entertainers in a Rockford theater salute to civilian employees at Camp Grant. The 8:15 p m Friday performance featured stars drawn from sixth service command enlisted personnel in the show titled General Baylis Salute to Civilian Personnel.
Thirty seven rural and city elementary schools in Carroll County earned state recognition certificates for the 1945-1944 school year announced by L. E. Bruch, county superintendent. Nine men completed the avi ation cadet qualifying exam held Wednesday evening in the Savanna high school library under Duane Wilson and Army air force aides from Rockford. The group includes six from Savanna, two from Elizabeth and one from Thomson. They may take the air corps physical examination and, if successful, become eligible for enlistment in the air force reserve, with active duty not until age 18 or after finishing the current semester. The Chicago aviation examining board has discontinued qualifying men who have reached 18.
The Illowa league annual track meet will be held at the Savanna high school athletic field on Chicago Avenue Friday night April 28. Participating schools include Lyons of Clinton DeWitt Maquoketa and Savanna with dual meets being arranged with Fulton and Lyons of Clinton under athletic director W F Massey.

Thomson notes welcome visits from Onawa Iowa, Mr and Mrs Marvin Badtke and son Richard, who arrived last Wednesday to stay with his parents Mr and Mrs Richard Badtke. They visited Forrest Gilbert in Port Byron and friends at Moline and Rock Island. Marvin, a U S Engineering office clerk at Onawa for six years, will soon join the army. New Wisconsin tenants move into the former Graharing house, known as the former Christian church parsonage. Mr and Mrs Charles Atkins and Norman of Bensenville were weekend guests of Mr and Mrs Bion McGrath at Savanna.
A district proposal to merge seven elementary districts Milledgeville No 100 Cottonpoint No 94 Walker No 95 Chambers No 96 South Otter Creek No 97 Dutchtown No 98 Wood No 0% drew resident interest. A March 31 meeting at Milledgeville School will decide on procedure and whether to hold an election. Superintendent Laverne Edwards cites postwar educational gains, teacher shortages, and better programs as reasons for consolidation.
Judge Elwyn R. Shaw of Freeport married Miss Mildred J. Voight at the Episcopal Theological Seminary chapel in Alexandria Virginia. The bride served as his longtime secretary for 19 years.
Announcement of the marriage between Cpl Elwyn L Schubert of Mt Carroll and Eva Mae Boykin of Longview Texas. The ceremony was held Wednesday March 1 in the post chapel at Camp Harmon Texas. Schubert is the son of Mr and Mrs LeRoy Schubert and serves in a medical detachment at Camp Harmon.
The Carroll County War Price and Rationing Board will close from noon to 3 p m on Good Friday April seven. The office will open in the morning and again from 3 to 5 p m. B L Peck chairman notes the change. In other news Mr and Mrs Ray Morgan and Sandy visited the Morgans in Fulton with Sandy staying to visit grandparents.
Carroll county assessors gathered Monday at the courthouse with County Treasurer Frank L. Ross to receive supplies and instructions for the upcoming tax assessment slated to start April 1. The week saw numerous marriage licenses issued by County Clerk W. M. Nipe and a flurry of warranty and quitclaim deeds transferring property in Savanna Mt. Carroll Chadwick and surrounding townships.
Mrs. Clyde Stier 62 of Sa Yanna died Friday in Decorah Ia after birth of a stillborn son. Her funeral was in Savanna with burial there. Dorothy Enz Seiler born Chicago Aug 6 1911 married Clyde Beller of Lanark. survived by husband two children Harry and Rosemary, mother, brother and extended relatives. Mrs Elizabeth Sword 80 Dec 1 1863 Md native died after heart attack near Lanark. funeral plans pending. Survived by son Charles and daughter Anna Merchant, three grandchildren and brother Charles Sheeley.
The executive committee of the Republican County Chairman's Association of Illinois endorses Senator Arnold P. Benson for Secretary of State. They cite his experience and character and say state officers, Chicago ward organizations, Cook County townships, and a majority of Republican presses and primary voters support him, noting over 150,000 nominating petitions signed.
Tax extension underway as state Supreme Court ruling empowers the revenue department to issue railroad and capital stock assessments revised from October 11 1945 figures. Preparation delayed three months due to Illinois railroad objections. statewide average assessment rises from 41 percent to 54 percent.
March saw continued cuts in Old Age Pension and Aid to Dependent Children figures in Illinois. Old Age Pension recipients dropped to 156 802 from 139 561 in February, a record monthly decrease, while ADC allowances reached 52 112 children in 22 318 families. Despite overall reductions, average payments rose in both programs.
Second Lt. John L. Nightingale twenty one year old former Savanna high school athlete was killed in action over Germany on February 10 a war department message to his mother said He had been listed as missing after a bombing raid over Germany on February 26 He was a navigator on a large U S bomber on his first mission over Europe born March 25 1922 in Savanna he attended Savanna High School class of 1940 and studied at the University of Illinois before entering the Army Air Corps in January 1943 He is survived by his mother his widow the former Elna Swanson of Savanna and many relatives and friends
Bryant Iowa visitors Mr and Mrs Harold Shelley and family joined Mr and Mrs John Noordhoff while Mr and Mrs Ralph Nielsen hosted a duck dinner for relatives including Marvin Bad tke of Onawa who will soon join the army. Attendees included the Badtke family, Forrest Gilbert Port Byron, the Bier sisters Clinton, Albert Paulsen DeWitt, Doris Aldrich, and Albert Bier. Herman Senneff Morrison visited Wes Knesa Sunday. Gerald Printy visits the Ted Wells home in Clinton this week.

Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the Frank funeral home in Lanark for Samuel C Thompson 76 a lifetime county farmer who died Saturday at his home. The Rev G M Beck pastor of the Methodist church of Loyetors officiated with services at Cherry Grove cemetery north of Lanark. Pallbearers: Hay Moyer D F Power D A Fink Ray Moir Shannon Lieyd Petersol Lower. Honorary pallbearers: J T Eckman and Adolph. He was born February 1 1868 in Welsh Run Franklin county youngest of three children. He married Bertha Rowland April 14 1891 and lived in Cherry Grove most of his life. He retired about three years ago due to illness and recently moved to Lanark. He was a member of the First Brethren church of Lanark and served as usher and on the church board. He also worked with a local insurance company and was a director of the Fate One Cooperative Elevator of Lanark. Surviving: widow a son Forrest Thompson Lanark a singer Mrs Macy Jacobs and a brother WH preceded him in death.
Sergeant L. Hanson, 22, an engineer aboard a Liberator bomber, was killed Sunday when the aircraft attempted a forced landing near Fort Worth Texas. His parents and several siblings survive. The family moved from Cordova to Mt Carroll about a year ago.
The Savanna Ordnance Depot announces an urgent need for up to 500 workers at Proving Ground in Illinois. Jobs offer service rolls, overtime pay over 49 hours weekly, sick leave, and 30 days annual paid leave. Training provided, 48 hour standard week with 8 hours overtime, overtime pay up about 2 percent. Call the Personnel Office in Savanna for details.
Mt. Carroll High School will join the Rock River Conference and withdraw from the Carroll conference. Coach Carl Kellman announced a full schedule for football and basketball next year, with existing games set against Oregon Ambo Morrison Mt. Morris Polo and Rochelle at Mt. Carroll.
