He campaigns with Governor Dwight H. Green and other Republican figures.
Lanark buyers McLean and Carroll shipped prime butcher hogs that sold at 14.30 per cwt, the top hog price for their weight in the day’s trade. George Kniss of Lanark offered 24 head of 1200 pound steers that brought 16.50 per cwt, near the week’s top quote.

The Polo hemp mill will operate for at least two more years after a crowd of about 160 farmers met at Polo town hall. Some 130 Carroll and Ogle county growers signed contracts for 1944 covering about 2 000 acres, with 500 additional acres expected from the session. H D McCrory of Washington DC, head of the CCC hemp division, said processing of the 1943 crop is under way and that Polo may continue for two years, as Illinois hosts 11 mills with only four planned to operate this year. Hemp netted area growers about 95 dollars per acre in 1943.
Judge Ralph P. Sheridan of Freeport presiding in Carroll County as Judge O M Grove is on vacation. Sheridan visits Mt Carroll each Monday from 10 a m to 3 p m. County Treasurer Frank L Ross requests Carroll County township assessors attend a courthouse meeting next Monday March 27 to receive supplies and instructions for starting the 1944 assessment. The meeting opens at 1 p m.
Charles Clopton aged 35 of Mt. Carroll pleaded guilty in circuit court to neglect to provide for his child. He was placed on probation for one year by Judge George C. Dixon after an indictment returned by the March grand jury.
George Shaw of Savanna pleaded guilty in circuit court on larceny charges from the March grand jury and was released on his own recognizance after 58 days in county jail. Lloyd J Schildwachter of Lanark granted a divorce from Imogene Schildwachter in Mt Carroll circuit court.
Sheriff Eber Shepherd announced the Carroll County jail was empty Tuesday for the first time in several months, marking a notable temporary lull in incarceration.
Carroll county agricultural conservation association chairman Herman Daehler urges all dairy farmers to apply for February milk and butterfat payments. Forms were mailed, but changes in farm operators may have caused gaps. Deadline for January applications is March.

Taylorville high school defeated Elgin high 56 to 33 to claim the Illinois state high school basketball championship. The win completed a 45 game winning streak this season and made Taylorville the first undefeated state champion, after beating Kewanee and Moline en route to the final. South Shore high of Chicago took third by beating Champaign in the consolation.
The Clyde Skiles farm barn five miles north of Sevanna burned Sunday releasing a calf as the only livestock loss. Estimated loss runs between 700 and 800 dollars, insured. Fire discovered about 2 20 p m. Savanna rural truck and firefighters fought the blaze, also battling a grass fire in Palisades park started by sparks. A second fire at Robert Dizer home on Wacker road southeast of Savanna caused 40 dollars in damage from a faulty exhaust pipe.
Carter H. Harrison announces new IRS office hours for the main Chicago office and all First District branches. Opening at 8:30 a.m. and closing at 5:15 p.m. every day Monday through Saturday, effective March 20.
Joseph Char Reeder 77 former Mt Carroll barber died Tuesday March 14 at his Clinton Iowa home. Funeral services were held Thursday at the Mt. Carroll First Baptist Church with Rev R H Leitner officiating. Burial in Oak Hill cemetery. He was born March 26 1866 in Maryland and married Emma Leger June 11 1888 in Fair Haven township. Survivors include his widow two sons Earl and Dorris of Clinton two grandchildren and two sisters Prudence Rawlins and Ruth Etta Switzer both of Mt Carroll.

The Northwestern Illinois Utilities of Savanna will sell to Fred D. Ellis and Edmund J. Haugh of Chicago for 840 500, approved by the Securities Exchange Commission. Proceeds retire 80 000 of American Utilities series as 6 per cent collateral trust bonds due in 1964 are issued.
A car carrying four people crashed into a rock embankment at the Y junction of routes 64 and 67 two miles west of Sabula two miles west of Sabula, injuring three. Joe Warfield, Stella Coffman, and Delma Nicholf were hospitalized in Savanna with serious injuries, while Blaine LaShelle and one passenger escaped unharmed.
The Rural Youth of Carroll county held its meeting March 15 at the Farm Bureau Hall Mt. Carroll with 80 members present. Officers elected include President Lawrence Woissner Shannon and Vice President Harry Stengel Lanark. Lois Haas Savanna is secretary treasurer succeeding temporary secretary Alverta Vertchus. Council members elected were Paul Miller Ruth McGough Savanna Harold Yochem Lowell Toepfer Mt Carroll Marilyn Woessner Shannon and Monte Greenawalt Lanark. A March 29 meeting of officers and council members will be held at the Farm Bureau office.
The sixth annual Chicago Junior Market Lamb Show and Sale will take place at the Chicago Stock Yards on Friday June 16. Midwest 4-H and FFA members may enter market lambs with sixty cash prizes totaling 250000. Exhibitors may win in four classes and the top lamb will earn a carved lamb trophy plus a $10 prize for the best pen. Local postmasters announce changes to postage and money orders effective March 26. First class letters remain unchanged except the 2c local rate is eliminated. Air mail rates vary by destination with 6c per half ounce abroad, insured mail and C O D fees double, and registered mail fees rising. Money order fees increase about four cents.
Regional meetings of selective service boards and farm war boards begin March 21 to discuss agricultural deferments. Col. Paul G. Armstrong and Prof. Robert C. Ross outline coordination efforts to aid the war effort. Attendance limited to selective service personnel and U. S. D. A. war board members. An April 5 meeting is set for Freeport.
Mr and Mrs Alva Ditsworth of Polo learned their son Pfc LaVern Ditsworth 20 was killed in action in Italy on February 2 1944. Born in Lanark October 18 1924 he joined the Army May 21 1943 serving at Camp Wolters Fort Meade and overseas from October 1943. An expert with arms he earned six medals plus a good conduct award. Surviving are his parents and four brothers Ray Clarence Dwaine and Lyle.
Dale Pfe Ethridge of Monterey California and Rose Epperson of Atlanta Georgia wed on Saturday March 11 at the Ethridge home near Lanark.

Mr. and Mrs. Lute Geisinger and Mrs. Jesse Green and Mrs. George Gross of Mitchell Neb visited Monday at Moline in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Johnson.
Ernest J Reenhart 77 longtime community resident died Monday March 26 in East Moline hospital after recent illness. Funeral at 2 pm Thursday Frank Funeral Home Chadwick with Rev T R Moritz officiating. Burial in Fulton Catholic cemetery. Survived by wife Augusta, three grandchildren, two brothers, a sister, and many relatives.
Louisa M Bickelhaupt 89 native of Carroll county died Wednesday March 15 in Clinton Iowa at her son G E Bickelhaupts home where she had lived seven years. She was born January 10 1856 and educated at Frances Shimer College. Survived by three children two sisters nine grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. The body was moved to Mt Carroll for services at 2 30 p m Saturday in Frank Funeral Home and interment in Oak Hill mausoleum.
Governor Green states Illinois should not adopt the federal service vote. He telegrammed President Roosevelt that Illinois servicemen should have the right to vote for all offices, not just president and Congress, and said the Illinois servicemen's ballot is complete.
