Lewiston Trail Location Sought in Carroll County History Marker

Carroll County Historic Sites and Trails Committee led by Judge Ed ward J Turnbaugh and the Illinois State Historical Society seek local help to mark the Lewiston trail route through Carroll County. Disagreement over course from 1830 maps and Preston articles prompts a countywide search for traces along creeks roads and ridges to fix a precise path for a historical marker.

Fire at Hans farm kills livestock in Thomson area

A Thursday afternoon blaze on Elmer Hans farm east of Thomson destroyed a hog and pig operation. Ten purebred Swiss heifers ten veal calves ten sows 40 feeder pigs and about 75 baby pigs died. Terry Hans and his father arrived home as Chadwick fire department responded. Durwards saved about 12 sows. Loss estimated 13000 to 15000 dollars with partial insurance.

Fluoride Added to Thomson Village Water System

Thomson's fluoridation system has been installed and began operating with an inspector praising the village waterworks. Village President Joe Shutters cited a cost near 400 dollars, noting the project was cheaper than anticipated as state legislation now requires fluoride in all water systems.

Three File for School Board

The Thomson Community Unit School District 301 will hold an election from noon to 6 pm on Saturday April 11 to fill three board seats. Raymond Tom Adolph filed his candidacy on the final filing day along with incumbent Eumeor Halfman and Warren Waltrip who was appointed after Fred Hook's death. Clifford Dykstra with a term ending this year did not seek re election.

Students Earn Superior Ratings at District Junior Contest

The District Junior music contest in Thomson Hana on March 21 featured participants from Orion Atkinson Neponset and Thomson. Superior ratings earned by soloists duets and groups qualify them for the State Junior High contest in Ashton on April 11.

Migrant Waterfowl Return to Carroll County Signals Spring

Early 1940s counts show 11 200 ducks and 9 120 geese across the Mississippi River from Dubuane Iowa to Rock Island Ill with a peak goose population expected late March. Canada geese numbers surpass the prior decade, especially around Pool No 13 and Potters Marsh near Thomson, with most birds moving north by the third week of April.

Admits First Patient at Good Samaritan Nursing Home

The Good Samaritan Nursing Home in Mt. Carroll admitted its first patient, John Sarma, shortly after noon on Wednesday, March 25. Carroll County’s new 68 bed facility will house fifteen residents initially, with fourteen more to follow in the coming days. Administrator Richard D. Tinius said occupancy remains limited until a full license is issued.

Open meeting on drugs at Chadwick High gym

The Chadwick High School gymnasium hosts an open meeting on drugs Tuesday March 31 at 7 30 p m. Entitled The Crutch that Cripples the program features Mt.
