Lincoln Highway Route Change Promised for Northern Illinois

Illinois plans to reroute the Lincoln Highway south of Dixon to Route 71 and east to Aurora with maps updated around April 15. The change aims to improve pavement and bypass rough stretches, though locals may still cling to the old red white and blue markers and route memory.

Tax Bills Sent Out Saturday in Carroll County

About eight or nine thousand 1937 tax bills were mailed Saturday by the county treasurer. Carroll County taxpayers responded Monday with over $9,000 in payments, a strong early start toward this year’s tax collection.

Assessors to Meet Friday for Orders in 1938 Tax Plan

Township assessors with County Treasurer Frank L. Ross will convene March 25 to finalize the fair cash value for 1938 property assessments starting April 1. Lower grain and livestock values are expected as market prices declined. The meeting will cover auto values from national guides and personal property, with a state tax commission representative present. Assessors must also collect 1937 crop averages for the Illinois department of agriculture under a new crop acreage census law.

Cattle Breeders Organize In Northwestern Illinois

Brown Swiss breeders in northwestern Illinois form a district breed organization to promote the dairy cattle. Officers include President Ray Folgate of Freeport and Rex Rahn of Lanark with John Sullivan of Freeport as secretary treasurer. Edwin Keim of Mount Carroll chairs Carroll County. A Brown Swiss show is planned for June. breeders tout ease of handling and profitable veal calves, noting good fit with local farming.

Corn Loan Time Limit Extended by Wallace

Secretary Henry A. Wallace extends the deadline for applying to federal corn loans under the CCC. The extension aims to allow farmers to store larger percentages of past production as part of the ever normal granary plan. Loans are for AAA participants in 1937 to provide price protection amid favorable but uncertain weather.

Two In Jail On Charges Of Larceny

Two men are held in the county jail awaiting hearings on larceny charges. Leo Bellows, 19, formerly near Lanark, was arrested in Rock Falls last Wednesday and brought to the county seat. He was indicted March 7 by the grand jury for alleged theft of chickens from the Percy Schreiner farm near Brookville last January. Bond was set at 1000 dollars. Clyde Bowman of Mt. Carroll is also jailed for alleged theft of goods from the William Isenhart farm near Mt. Carroll last year. Bellows was sentenced to five months at Vandalia when arraigned Monday before Circuit Judge Harry Edwards.

Five Milledgeville women hurt in morning collision

Early Tuesday at Frederick's oil station on route 40 Milledgeville a two-vehicle crash injured five women. Lucille Schreiner and passengers in her car suffered cuts, bruises, and a head injury while two were taken to Sterling hospital for observation. Driver Paul Dusing escaped serious harm.

Rhene B. Law of Savanna was named president of the Young Democrats of Carroll County at a Savanna City Hall gathering last week. He succeeds Francis Brennan with Martin Ginie as first vice president and E. D. Gantert as second vice president. William Gouse, Milledgeville, is third vice president. Carroll Man Sentenced Ten Days for Drunk Driving

Jacob Shellhouse, 60, of Mt. Carroll, pleaded guilty to operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated. He was sentenced to 10 days in Stephenson county jail and banned from driving for six months after arrest near Freeport by State Officer Leo Hill.

Wave of Auto Thefts Puzzles Authorities in Mt Carroll

Three cars stolen in Mt Carroll Monday night between eight and ten o clock. Two recovered quickly. a third remains missing. Car thefts also reported in Stockton the same evening. Victims include Marion Hartman parked outside Luther Church on Clay street and Harl Johnston near the high school. Police investigation continues as detectives review clues and locations.

Former Savanna man honored in Elizabeth funeral rites

Funeral services were held in Elizabeth for Lawrence O. Wurster who moved from Savanna to Elizabeth in 1935. He died Saturday in Mercy hospital Dubuque after a sinus infection. Surviving are his wife Mildred and three daughters. he was active in Farm Bureau and local civic groups. Pallbearers included local officials and neighbors. Separately, the Illinois State Department of Conservation reported a 1937 revenue rise and noted distribution of 6,000 quail 29,000 pheasants and over 48 million fish in the year.
