In Babson's Weekly Report from Babson Park dated March 8, the author warns money and bank deposits are only useful as exchanges for goods. He advocates selective buying, investing in land and essential assets, and prudent spending, stressing lasting value and avoiding overreliance on any one asset.
State Auditor A. C. Specter notes February rises in old age pension and aid to dependent children payments. Carroll county old age pension 8,551 to 277. Whiteside 24,148 to 732. Aid to dependent children Carroll 859 for 38 children. Whiteside 4,823 for 204.
Mr and Mrs Harry Kipnis of Mt Carroll are the parents of a daughter born Wednesday March 6 in Savanna city hospital.
Holland and Pratt’s herd of 19 Guernseys and Holsteins topped Carroll County Dairy Herd Improvement for February with 1055 lbs milk and 42.3 lbs fat per cow, none dry. Tousley Bros. (13 cows) were second with 1627 lbs milk and 41.8 lbs fat, followed by John Derrer (31 cows) at 1209 lbs milk and 40.9 lbs fat. R. R. Porter and Son had 947 lbs milk and 36.4 lbs fat. Fred Miller’s 15 cows produced 664 lbs milk and 26.0 lbs fat. 21 herds tested with 5384 cows on test and 54 dry. Edith the Holstein led with 1842 lbs milk and 75.6 lbs fat. Second high belonged to Holland and Pratt with 1411 lbs milk and 73.4 lbs fat. Third high was Carroll and French No. 37 with 119 lbs milk and 69.5 lbs fat. Grace of John Derrer produced 2061 lbs milk and 64.0 lbs fat. Bob Tait, Howard L. Derrer’s Holstein, had 1680 lbs milk and 66.5 lbs fat. Readers invited to suggest cow names.
Mrs Harold Workman 31 was found hanging in a corn crib on the Morrison farm Saturday near 5 p m An inquest ruled death by self inflicted strangulation while she was low in spirits due to poor health Funeral services were held at Reynolds funeral home and Ebenezer Reformed church Burial was in Grove Hill cemetery She is survived by her husband five children and her parents two sisters and two brothers
Leslie Hoak of Lanark and William J. Peterson of Clinton Illinois were injured Friday in a Clinton collision. Hoak a passenger in a Watts Lanark car suffered leg injuries Peterson driving his own car nose injuries Watts reports about 200 damage to his car and Petersen listed 400 damages. Petersen driving north says Watts southbound veered left and hit his car overturning it.
The Carroll county farm housed an average 930 inmates last year. Total cost of care was 8770.50 dollars, averaging 5.52 dollars per inmate per week, compared with 6.55 dollars per inmate per week the prior year.
Raymond H. Clarke 56 of Savanna died by self inflicted gunshot at 12 15 a m Sunday at his home after he told Savanna police chief he would blow his brains out. Coroner’s inquest returned a verdict of death by own action. Clarke a World War I veteran and civilian guard at the Savanna ordnance depot is survived by his widow three daughters a son and a grandson. Military funeral services were held Wednesday at the Fuller funeral home.
David Aitken 52, a Milwaukee railroad brakeman, was killed at Oxford Junction Iowa when crushed between train parts. Funeral services were held in Savanna with burial at Savanna cemetery. He was born in Centerville Iowa July 24 1893. Surviving include a widow five daughters three sons and siblings. William Clay Hubble 73 died March 9 in Savanna city hospital after months as a patient. Funeral at Fuller funeral home with Masonic burial at Savanna cemetery. He was born July 29 1872 and never married. A nephew Virgil Wilt of Thomson survives.
Miss Beulah Alber of Mill edgeville and Leo McCormick of Deer Grove married in St Marys Cathedral Peoria at 10 am Tuesday March 5. Rev Haas officiated with Mr and Mrs Robert McCormick of Peoria as attendants. A bridal luncheon followed and the couple left for a brief honeymoon.
Chester Kahler and Jack Martin bagged a female red fox on Sunday while hunting. A short scan found seven cubs. returning to the nest they found five more. Each home now feeds six cubs of the litter using a medicine dropper.
Two Savanna tavern operators, John Meeker and Joseph Runyan, paid $100 fines each after pleading guilty in Carroll County circuit court to keeping gambling devices. Judge George C. Dixon ordered them to show cause why the confiscated machines should not be destroyed. Also arraigned was Walter James who pled guilty to false pretenses and received probation with a restitution payment. One divorce, Genevieve Doyle from Benjamin Doyle, was granted on cruelty grounds.
Commander Oliver Etnyre urges Chadwick Post of the American Legion to attend the regular meeting Thursday evening March 21 as important business will be brought up. He notes a new Legion post is to be organized in Thomson by Work War II veterans with a mass meeting planned tonight or Friday to form the group.
Twelve new policemen, graduates of the Chicago police school, join Lt. Ray Cramer’s state highway police district. One from Carroll county and two from Whiteside, all World War II veterans, increase the force to 32 men with three sergeants and Lt. Cramer. Mrs Kenneth Whitney hosted the bridge club last Thursday with guest Mrs Harley Foster winning high prize and Mrs Eugene Miller taking second. The next meeting will be at Mrs Steve Adee in Milledgeville. Miss Lena Netz and Mrs Ada Hayet of Dilton were Sunday dinner guests of Mr and Mrs W J Schreiner.
A Rock Island Navy recruiting representative will interview interested young men at the Savanna post office each Friday at 9 a m and at the Fulton post office each Friday at 1 p m. Enlistments are open to men aged 17 to 30 inclusive with terms of 2 3 4 or 6 years. Minorities serve until the day before their 21st birthday.
A county board resolution revises rules for outdoor halls, charging a 25 dollar yearly license, restricting hours from noon to 1 a m, and enforcing rules at licensee expense. Deputized officers will staff dances, with licensees listing operation day and limits on multiple halls on the same day outside holidays.

Northern Illinois farmers are invited to a March 18 meeting at 1 30 p m in the Farm Bureau Office Woodstock to hear about new livestock disease control measures from Arnold P Benson director of the State Department of Agriculture The discussion aims to prepare herd owners for July 1 1947 when all livestock will be subject to state regulations The program will emphasize calfhood vaccination with vaccines and veterinary service provided to immunize calves aged 4 to 8 months on Miin vis farms before the new law takes effect
Chadwick's Independent basketball squad defeated Thomson Indees 47 to 40 last Thursday night at Thomson. Tripp led Chadwick with 14 points, Schreiner added 16, Weber 11, while Thomson’s Wilt scored 14 and Young 10.
The Secretary of Agriculture calls for Illinois farmers to increase 1946 goals by 25 000 acres of corn and 150 000 acres of soybeans and adjust plans to boost total output. Veterans may seek a preference rating to buy new farm machinery, with deadlines for filing certificates and dealer delivery rules.
A Friday blizzard crippled travel with up to ten inches of snow, causing standstill traffic and stalled trains. Two men died in a Highway 20 crash near Freeport as drifting snow cut ventilation in a buried car. Power lines and milk plants suffered outages and deliveries were delayed across Chadwick and surrounding areas as temps swung from below to above freezing. The storm eased by Sunday with sun returning Monday, but remaining snow kept roads nearly impassable in many areas.
Mr and Mrs Raymond Schreiner observed their 25th wedding anniversary Sunday March 10 at their home in Chestnut Park Savanna with a family dinner and open house from 2 30 to 5 30 He is a maintenance foreman at the Savanna ordnance depot They have four children Marvin of Mt Carroll William Arthur Norma Jean and Dorothy Irene all of Savanna and one granddaughter Phyllis Harris who attends the University of Wisconsin Madison The Harris visits were from Mr and Mrs Don Harris
Morrison high school fell 47 to 45 to East Moline in the sectional opener at Moline after leading 10 points early. Kewanee crushed Aledo 80 to 24, then defeated East Moline 45 to 41 on Friday to reach the state finals.
Chadwick residents Mr and Mrs Alvin Reiff came back from Sarasota Florida where they stayed weeks. Mr and Mrs William Lewis and Mr and Mrs George Cambman Sr arrived Monday from Florida also snowbirding. They altered plans due to Mrs Catherine's illness as Merlyn and daughter hosted dinner with Mrs Donald Bogott inville.
