Sergeant Forrest Engles Remembered in Lanark Burial
The casketed remains of Sergeant Forrest Allen Engles, a World War II infantryman killed in the South Pacific, arrived in Lanark with an Army escort and were interred at Lanark Cemetery. Born February 5, 1918, he was the oldest of five, a Lanark High School graduate, and served from 1940 in the Illinois 33rd Division. He enlisted in 1941, served in Camp Forest and the South Pacific, and died January 7, 1945, at age 26. The service is set for March 13 at 2:30 p.m. with Rev. Merle Hanbecker officiating.

Veterans enrolled in the on the job training farm shop program held a class meeting in Strauch's shop on February 25. Dick Strauch demonstrated sharpening and retooling saws, plane tuning, drilling square holes, a simple hardware cupboard, and how to cut a rafter. The class then cut 75 rafter heels for the new American Legion Building in Hadwick.

Hattie Neuschwanger 71 lifelong Mt Carroll resident died at 9 30 p m Sunday in her home. Born Nov 6 1876 in Mt Carroll she moved with Hiam Fulath in 1895. Surviving include two daughters Mrs Edwa Eshelman and Mrs Vera Helm a son Paul six grandchildren four brothers and four sisters. Funeral services for Mrs Mary Byers 95 Lanark were held at Frank funeral home with Rev Olson and Rev Knapp officiating.

Savanna resident Savanna-Chester R. Adams died at 12:45 p m Tuesday in Savanna city hospital from a cart attack after surgery. He had been admitted Monday evening and had worked for the Milwaukee Road. He belonged to the Royal Order of Moose Knights of Pythias Machinists Lodge Brotherhood of American Railway Employes and the Presbyterian. Surviving are two sisters Mrs Lloyd Colwell Savanna and Mrs Lava Asay Mt Carroll three brothers Richard Ben Adams Savanna and Wallace Dems Davenport Ia wife and two children preceded him in death. Catherine Jensen 73 Savanna for 35 years died suddenly at home Monday night. Funeral set for 9:30 a m Thursday at St Johns Catholic Church with burial in Savanna Catholic Cemetery. Anna Jensen survives. also sister Mrs Bridget Watson Lawrence Mass.

Farm Home Burned Southeast of Thomson in Wednesday Fire
Fire of undetermined origin destroyed the Henry Waite farm home occupied by Mr and Mrs Asa Kurth five miles southeast of Thomson on Wednesday afternoon. The couple were away in Clinton seeking a doctor. Neighbors reported the blaze started shortly after 2 p m and the Thomson fire department could not save the building. A northwest wind fanned the flames and sparking away from nearby structures. No insurance details were learned by press time.

V K Kortemeier 27 of Freeport and James F Miller 21 of Lanark collided head on at 7 p m Saturday on Route 26 six miles south of Freeport. Kortemeier was taken to Deaconess hospital Freeport with possible skull fracture and deep lacerations. Miller suffered facial injuries. Kortemeier’s car wrecked and Miller’s car badly damaged.

Lanark firefighters battled a warehouse blaze two miles south of Polo on state route 26. Discovered at 9 pm, the fire caused extensive damage with early estimates at 75,000 for the building and 200,000 for contents. Water supply from Polo and help from over 20 farmers aided the effort. tunnels connected to adjacent buildings were a risk but kept intact.
