Burglaries struck Sterling garages on a Saturday night into Sunday morning. In Mt Carroll, thieves pried open a cash register and damaged a safe at Petty and Trolman, failing to open the safe though it contained about 80 dollars plus a few checks. Entry was gained by forcing a window, with the scene found about 6:40 am Sunday. The raid spurred sheriff’s inquiry, while other nearby garages reported similar break ins but safes were not opened.
Carroll County farmers in the 1938 AAA program received about 157,538 in benefits with nearly 1,200 checks issued or pending for distribution. Officials expect total county benefits to reach around 200,000 as additional applications and transmissions to the state office proceed.

Ralph Heimbaugh of Lanark was seriously injured when his car collided with Galen Gerdes of Milledgeville at Route 52 and 72. Gerdes, driving south on 72, had stopped at the intersection but did not see Heimbaugh’s eastbound vehicle. Heimbaugh’s car struck Gerdes front, then veered onto the bank, struck a tree, and landed right side up. Heimbaugh suffered a gash requiring 14 stitches. Gerdes was not injured. her car sustained damage.
1938 reports show Carroll County with a fine traffic record yet 51 accidents four fatal and four injuries. Nearby counties mostly matched or worsened 1937 figures with varying death tolls, including Ogle, Whiteside, Rock Island, and Stephenson counties posting multiple fatalities and hundreds of total accidents. Overall motor vehicle crashes totaled 16 042 with 1 117 deaths nationwide.
A large rambling house at Milledgeville owned by Della Coleman burned Sunday afternoon around one. Built 86 to 90 years ago, it belonged to Horace Humphrey’s family earlier and was later sold to Henry Meyers. Fire started from a defective flue. Mrs. Buxton alerted neighbors, saving most furniture and clothing though insurance coverage was only 2500. Robert Heffelfinger fell from the roof, breaking his ankle. hydrant access hindered water supply.

About 1,600 workers from Dubuque Galena and nearby projects will move to Savanna and nearby to speed up clearing operations. Together with local crews the government project workforce exceeds 2,200 men, with continued work as weather allows.
Mary Force 94, longtime Lanark resident, died Sunday evening at her home on Lanark Ave. She had lived in Lanark since 1877 and was the town’s oldest resident.
Lanark notices report Mrs Mary Force, Lanark’s oldest resident, died at her home after influenza illness. Funeral services were held at Speers funeral home with Rev. Leathvin officiating. Surviving: two sons Wallace and Harvey, daughter Mrs Liva Mathias, 18 grandchildren, nine great grandchildren. Burial in Lanark cemetery.
Miss Ruth Cripe of Mt Carroll wed Claude Haenitsch of Ashton in a Lanark church ceremony read by Rev J D Leatherman. Attendants wore royal blue and navy. music featured Leone Schmidt with Eleana Leatherman. Bride’s sister, Deliah Cripe, is Mt Carroll High School alumna. The couple will live on a farm near Ashton. A Clinton Iowa marriage license listed Herbert Quechborner and Darlene Wapner as witnesses.
Jacob Engelking found a ten foot rope tied around a yearling calf in the barn Sunday morning. Neighbors were called as the alleged theft was interrupted. the calf remained, but no stock was missing. The calf was described as very wild and hard to hold.
Alvin Bieloma former Fulton high school captain played for Calvin College. He set a Michigan single game scoring record with 24 points and led the MOCC in total season points. Bieloma was widely known as a scoring threat in Fulton games.
A crowded field forms for township elections on April 4 as thirteen townships in the county seek supervisors and school officials. Incumbents defend seats amid petitions filed by numerous opponents, with candidates named from Sherwood to Washington and beyond, detailing posts on commissions, trustees, and boards.
A party was held Monday afternoon at Vinegar Fill school for pupils leaving and those with birthdays. Children played games and enjoyed cocoa ice cream wallis roasted marshmallows. Leaving pupils include Jacob Cornelis Myel yn Geerty Charles and Donald Gorden. Miss Alberta Dauphin teaches there. Hans Johnson leaves as assistant supervisor. one constable position is to be filled and an appointment for the unexpired term. The term expires in two years.
Chadwick will meet Mt Carroll in Savanna after winning the Elizabeth district title with a 24 to 22 final over York. York upset Hanna and Milledgeville earlier, while Thomson lost to Chadwick in the regional opener with a late surge by Chadwick. Ray Took led York with several baskets as the close game unfolded.
Funeral rites for Hans Johnson 87 a Savanna contractor and township supervisor were held Sunday at the Savanna Episcopal church with burial in Savanna cemetery. He died Thursday at Savanna home after years of poor health. Born in Denmark February 3 1852 he came to the United States in 1882 and married Bernadine Nelson in Maquoketa. He lived in Savanna where he contracted many buildings in Carroll county and served about 20 years as supervisor. Surviving are five sons one daughter eight granddaughters one grandson and three great grandchildren.
