River Shipping Boom and Lock 14 Activity Report
A comparison of water transport shows today’s river tonnage rising despite nostalgia for the past. From March to May at Lock 14, 215000 tons moved through, with oil and gas central to shipments. Nine boats operate locally, one pass along Soconie carrying 5400 tons, and a Clinton to La Crosse passenger boat now in service via McGregor. Elk Boat Co owns the passenger vessel. Storage stations for oil and gas are planned at Fulton, Hetten dorf, and Dubuque. After dam and lock completion about twelve workers will be employed in two day shifts and a night shift. Gates will close toward late August for pool tests, with a fall release expected to begin clearing the pool area as roughly 10000 acres of timber are cleared around lock and dam No. 13 and surrounding overflow lands near Arnold’s Landing and the Savannah Proving Grounds.
