Indictments and pleas proceed as courts handle multiple cases. Fred Whitmer of Pearl City pled guilty to drunken driving and received 80 days in jail. Karl Abbott of Peoria pleaded guilty to larceny, fined $1 and one day jail. Julius Hart of Chicago pleaded not guilty to murder with a deadly weapon, trial set for July 6. Vincent Frew of Lyndon indicted for drunken driving with July 7 appearance. Additional larceny charge against John Walter Edmonds and jury duties announced for July 6. The Milwaukee road confirms the annual yard repair program in Savanna runs March 1 to July 1 with material and labor costs over $5,000. Interlocking tower repairs include new siding doors windows and painting. a 40 foot steel smokestack will be erected at the sand house as final work, with a ten-man crew at present.
Riley Lotzbaugh, a noted Carroll County stockman, brought two carloads of steers fattened near Lanark to Chicago. Aberdeen Angus steers brought $10.25 per cwt, Herefords $10.10 per cwt, with Fred Wilhelm of Shannon at $10.85 and Tom Diffenhofer near Lanark at $10.65 per ewt. A top price for heifers went to Earl Bear of Lanark for 40 head averaging 759 pounds.
Carroll county assessors push to submit books for publication sheets by July 10. Savanna and Mr. Carroll delay due to large remaining lists. Real estate assessments show little change from last year with Rock Creek up by 8260 and Fair Haven down 15320. Personal property mostly up, five townships down.
The Chadwick Review again captured third place in the National Newspaper Contests general excellence class for smaller town weeklies at White Sulphur Springs West Virginia. First prize went to Tribune La Junta Colorado and second to The News Heron Lake Minnesota. 359 newspapers entered across the United States.
Heavy rain last Thursday and Friday caused widespread damage in Carroll County. Bridges and roads were washed out, farms flooded, and crops destroyed. A 75 kilowatt transformer at the Savanna ordnance depot was struck by lightning and burned, leaving temporary power measures in place.
The Carroll County Farm Bureau baseball team defeated the Ogle nine by 9 to 3 at Lanark field. Erdmi er pitched for Carroll. No game is on schedule this weekend but a postponed match with Winnebago County may be played.
Carroll county 4 H club girls LaVanne Holm Jeannette Kenyon Jean Hammond Grace Kenney and Mildred Weidman joined Camp Rotary three day encampment south of Rockford on Monday. 4 H leader Weidman accompanied the group. Upon their return the boys will begin a camping trip.
The state department of conservation issues notices to game wardens inspectors and investigators to guard song birds and other protected species. Citizens are urged to preserve birds in communities as they control pests and benefit crops. Wardens are briefed on penalties of 25 to 100 dollars for violations.

The Milwaukee railroad nears completion of repairs to Daviess County road bonds, White Pine State Park improvements, CCC enrollment at 1780, plans for farm benefit checks, and farmer agreement checks. The project aims to finish work on the dam and lock 13 in about two months. It calls for nine tainter gates and three roller gates to control the pool stage.
Work on lock and dam No 18 south of Thomson nears completion forming a 9 foot channel on the Mississippi to aid upper river traffic between St. Louis and Minneapolis.
