Two Plead Guilty On Local Indictments In Time

Milwaukee Rail Yard Repair Nears Finish at Savanna

The Milwaukee road confirms the annual yard repair program in Savanna runs March 1 to July 1 with material and labor costs over $5,000. Interlocking tower repairs include new siding doors windows and painting. a 40 foot steel smokestack will be erected at the sand house as final work, with a ten-man crew at present.

Carroll County Livestock Sells High In Chicago Market

Riley Lotzbaugh, a noted Carroll County stockman, brought two carloads of steers fattened near Lanark to Chicago. Aberdeen Angus steers brought $10.25 per cwt, Herefords $10.10 per cwt, with Fred Wilhelm of Shannon at $10.85 and Tom Diffenhofer near Lanark at $10.65 per ewt. A top price for heifers went to Earl Bear of Lanark for 40 head averaging 759 pounds.

Carroll county assessors push to submit books for publication sheets by July 10. Savanna and Mr. Carroll delay due to large remaining lists. Real estate assessments show little change from last year with Rock Creek up by 8260 and Fair Haven down 15320. Personal property mostly up, five townships down.

Review Again Places Third In N E A Contest

The Chadwick Review again captured third place in the National Newspaper Contests general excellence class for smaller town weeklies at White Sulphur Springs West Virginia. First prize went to Tribune La Junta Colorado and second to The News Heron Lake Minnesota. 359 newspapers entered across the United States.

Severe Rainfall Wreaks Havoc Across Carroll County

Heavy rain last Thursday and Friday caused widespread damage in Carroll County. Bridges and roads were washed out, farms flooded, and crops destroyed. A 75 kilowatt transformer at the Savanna ordnance depot was struck by lightning and burned, leaving temporary power measures in place.

State Department to Enforce Law to Protect Birds

The state department of conservation issues notices to game wardens inspectors and investigators to guard song birds and other protected species. Citizens are urged to preserve birds in communities as they control pests and benefit crops. Wardens are briefed on penalties of 25 to 100 dollars for violations.
