Rockford police detained three youths for hitchhiking inside city limits, then released them with rides to the edge of town. A fireworks stand near Freeport suffered a blaze and theft after attempting to dodge city rules, exposing the risk of lax enforcement.
Fire at the Ward Fritz farm tenanted by Karl Nesbitt, five miles northeast of Mt Carroll, destroyed the home and furniture. Sparks from a chimney are the believed cause. Firefighters lacked water supply. loss estimated around 5000 dollars with partial insurance. Neighbors saved most furniture. blaze started on the roof and grew before discovery.
Carroll county cattle feeders Stransky and Haring of Savanna marketed a two load consignment of steers at the Chicago Stock Yards on Tuesday, averaging 1044 pounds and selling for $10.45 per cwt. L Cheeseman of Shannon sold 27 head of 1039 pound steers at $10.15 per cwt. Cattle prices rose to the season’s high at Chicago with three carloads at $11.40 per cwt and heifers at $10.75 per cwt, the top for the year so far.
Carroll County records show 60 licenses to wed in the year ending June 30 1958 down from 177 the prior year. The Saltiel hygienic marriage law effective July 1 1987 cut out-of-state and pre-law applicants, with June totals dropping to five and April recording the fewest at two.
Washington dispatches report a 965000 PWA allocation for the Savanna Ordnance depot to build magazines and appurtenances, added to a 341137 army supply appropriation. An additional 100000 is asked from WPA funds for the larger project, with work expected by August 15 and personnel to grow by one major and one captain, Major Van Giesen arriving in September and Captain Osterman in August.
In June no auto fatalities in several northern Illinois counties and only one in others. Whiteside shows no June data though seven deaths occurred in the first four months. Half-year totals place Lee highest with six deaths, DeKalb and Boone four, Ogle three, McHenry and Stephenson two. Officials credit safety campaigns, high school courses, and civic programs for lower tolls as museums and livestock markets noted in Illinois.
June river traffic at the north Western draw bridge in Clinton rose to 66 boats from 39 in June 1937. Officials credit increased use of river facilities for petroleum products between Wood River Illinois and the Twin Cities, with new storage at Bettendorf Iowa and gasoline trucked to nearby Tri-City points.
Newly elected Savanna Lions club officers were installed at the last Thursday meeting. Ernest G. Graves became president, with John Grandy stepping down. Spencer Nesbitt Claude Briggs and the Rev H F Whitney named as first second and third vice presidents. W G Kent secretary, B J Clikeman treasurer, Francis Schmidel lion tamer, and S W Alden tail twister. Committees for the year were appointed by the new president.
Mt Carroll Commercial club schedules a horse-pulling contest for July 28 at Point Rock park as the feature of the Farmers and Merchants picnic. Entries in light under 3000 pounds and heavy 3000 pounds plus. prizes $25 and $15. Arthur Robbe handles entries. Afternoon events include farmer and business man contests and a Mt Carroll softball game with CCC camp at Carroll. Band concert in courthouse square and plans for Doughnut Day Aug 18 with free doughnuts and coffee.
The post office and treasury departments announced 280 public building projects including one for Mount Carroll. The Mt. Carroll project is estimated to cost about $75,000 with construction set to begin soon.

James W. Long of Harrisonville Missouri is named head coach and athletic director at Mt Carroll high school succeeding Harold B Walker. He will direct football basketball and track and teach social science and physical education while arriving in Mt Carroll late in August after Northwestern term ends.
Miss Frances May Roske daughter of Mr and Mrs M P Roske Mt Carroll received the Illinois general assembly scholarship to the University of Illinois from Carroll County ranking second in the county group on the exams Hugh Freece Senneff of Chadwick won the Carroll County agricultural scholarship in the same notice reporting scholarships awarded to local students.
The 20th annual Boys State Fair will run August 12 through 19 at the Illinois State Fair grounds in Springfield. Lawrence E. Bruci, county superintendent of schools, announced the event with J. B. Hill leading this year’s camp. Counties may nominate two to six boys based on population. Carroll County may send two unless others fail to fill quotas. Cost is seven dollars per boy, bedding and toiletries required, with agricultural college instructors from the University of Illinois directing instruction.
Rainfall in June totaled 7.43 inches in Mt Carroll per James McCray cooperative observer for the department of agriculture at the county seat. This exceeds the normal June average by 3.14 inches, though it falls short of the June 1937 record.
Mt Carroll High School selects a new athletic director to replace Harold Walker. The incoming coach has an excellent athletic record and will lead programs across all sports.
Clyde B K Kinney was elected commander of the Van Bibber Hansen post in Savanna at a Moose hall special meeting. Har old G Evans was succeeded. Other officers named include Virgil Marth senior vice commander Alfred A Whetzler junior vice commander Clifford Parker finance officer Irvin Tyler re elected sergeant at arms Delegates named Clyde E Kinney Lyndey Anderson with Harold G Evans and Alfred A Whettler alternates for the Rockford state convention August 20 21 22.
A holiday period in Illinois ends with 33 fatalities across the state. Officials say no death was caused by fireworks. the report attributes the fatalities to other causes and incidents during the holiday.
Tuesday reports show at least 34 Illinois residents died during the Independence Day celebration with nine auto deaths statewide. In Clinton Iowa area four swimmers from Clinton YMC A died in a Route 50 51 collision near Compton Illinois.
W. J. Schreiner, cashier of Farmers State bank Chadwick, is re appointed to the crime prevention and insurance committee of the Illinois Bankers Association. The committee along with bank management and education groups will meet in Chicago the week of July 18 to focus on the bank amendment to the state constitution and other work for the coming year.
Albert Handel and his uncle Fred Handel, both of near Savanna, were injured when their motorcycle collided with a car driven by Emil Groezinger on Ridge road near Mosquito Hill. Albert’s left finger was crushed and amputated.
Lanark prepares tonight for an organization meeting to perfect plans including locker issues and project coordination. Officials aim to finalize storage arrangements and streamline facilities for upcoming activities.
Tonight residents will discuss forming a cold storage locker plant with stock sales already more than half subscribed. The project aims to ease canning chores, boost meat consumption for rural families and aid livestock nationwide as over 100 Illinois locker plants are expected by fall.
Thomas Robert Watson, 18, son of Mr and Mrs Thomas L Watson of Savanna, received the Carroll County General Scholarship at the University of Illinois as the top scorer in the Mt Carroll competitive exam held June 4.
George Garber 40 a Lanark High School history instructor and assistant basketball coach died at St Francis hospital Freeport from a fractured skull suffered Thursday when he fell 16 feet from a pile of canned peas at the Fuhremann canning plant in Lanark. An inquest ruled accidental death. He had been a Lanark resident 12 years and previously coached football. He left teaching for a summer job at the plant. Surviving: widow Louise Stone Garber three children and several relatives. A separate note cites the first American horse trotting record in 1806.
