As the Republican National Convention gathers in Philadelphia a likely candidate remains uncertain though the party aims for a November victory. Roosevelt’s cabinet picks sparked party backlash and a Senate challenge, while British terms and French armistice talks shape the broader war context.
Mr and Mrs James Turnbaugh and children James Jr and Marcia visited the Mrs Sam Turnbaugh home near Chadwick. The Harry Fulrath family joined in Sunday dinner at the Orris Holy home. Victor Dauphin of Woodland was here last week.
W L Sherlock chairman of the Democratic county central committee files objections in county court to eight of Carroll county s precinct election official appointments. A July hearing date is set. Sherlock argues supervisors were not elected by party, so the central committee should name Democrats as judges and clerks in the eight precincts including Freedom Rock Creek Mt Carroll Savanna Fair Haven and Cherry Grove. Previous similar objections were overruled by a county judge and circuit court on appeal.
Officers of the newly organized Carroll County 4 H club federation were elected at a recent meeting. Maurice Guenzler Lanark named president Bert Hook Thomson vice president west Dorothy Artman Shannon vice president east Allen Heisler Mr Carroll vice president central Robert Cambman Milledgeville treasurer Harry Stengel Lanark reporter.
Joseph L. Katz 53, president of Peerless Finance in Rock Island, named with M. W. Lavin of Chicago in a suppressed Carroll county indictment for conspiracy and false pretenses. Katz died in his garage from accidental inhalation while working on his car. Lavin remains at large on bond. Clare Sandell 37 of Milledgeville faces charges of indecent liberties with a child, bond set at 2500. No true bills for Ysaias Espinosa of Savannah or Charles Randolph of Savannah in related cases.
A baseball game between Milledgeville and Carroll County Farm Bureau nine is set for Sunday afternoon June 30 at 2 30 p m. The Farm Bureau diamond on Ross Lower farm three miles west of Lanark on Route 64 will host the match.
The 1939 annual report on 454 Northwestern Illinois farms in Carroll county shows higher earnings due to strong crop yields and more livestock. Prices for crops and beef rose, though horses hogs and poultry fell. 30 farms fell short of five percent returns while 43 farms exceeded all expenses and left funds for operator labor.
Carroll county Farm Bureau baseball nine lost a 15 inning battle to Winnebago 7 to 6 on the local diamond. Carroll led 5-2 entering the ninth before Winnebago tied the game. They next face Ogle and Oregon, then Boone at Belvidere, with plans for Sunday afternoon games to complete the summer schedule.
Attorney Robert Morris was appointed by Judge Wheat to defend Clare Sandell of Milledgeville charged with indecent liberties with a child. Herbert Sigalus and James McCue of Savanna pleaded not guilty to assault with a deadly weapon, with trial set for July 16. both released on bond after grand jury indictments. They allegedly attacked Robert Sack of Savanna with an auto crank on April 6.
County Clerk Walter Watson issued licenses to Carl M. Meyers of Morrison and Elizabeth Kingery of Chadwick Elmer L. Kaufman and A LaVon Bott of Milledgeville Lloyd C. Becker of Savanna and Roberta R. Colehour of Mt Carroll.

Chanute Field announces enlistment chances in the Army Air Corps through its Technical School at Rantoul Illinois. The expansion program aims to raise enlisted strength to 45000 with 17882 men slated to study and train over two years.
Seventy-one 4-H club girls and leaders from Carroll county attended a Monday training school in Mt. Carroll led by Mrs. Elsie Ross Butler district girls 4-H leader. Mothers of several girls also attended with club leaders from Lanark Savanna Thomon Milledgeville Chadwick and other communities.

Carroll county joined 21 other Illinois counties at the second annual Junior Market Lamb Show and Sale at the Chicago Stock Yards June 18 and 19. Richard Allison and Law Brothers of Milledgeville exhibited. 67 youths showed 285 lambs with 59 prize divisions and auctions following judging. Lambs averaged 11.69 per cwt at 71.9 pounds, with top open-market price $10.50 per cwt. Indications show a quiet Fourth with no local special events. Churches in Chadwick and Fair Haven plan a joint picnic at Old Mill Park, and Kilgour woods near Sterling hosts a union picnic. Freeport hosts a four day rodeo and carnival while East Moline and Prophets Town schedule celebrations. Savanna again silent and fireworks unlikely.
Local gasoline and oil dealers anticipate higher prices starting July 1 due to a new defense tax bill. The act raises the federal gasoline tax from one to one and a half cents per gallon and adds a half cent tax on motor oil, while other levies on amusements autos tires cigars liquor and more are also included. The measure aims to raise over 4.5 billion dollars over five years.
Edwin Keim and son Lowell of Mount Carroll won five first prizes and two seconds at the Brown Swiss canton show in Emerson. Awards included multiple firsts for yearling bull calf cow with best udder senior yearling heifer and heifer calves, judged by Prof. J. G. Cash of the University of Illinois.
The Farm Bureau board tentatively picks Thursday August 29 1940 for the annual 4 H Roundup and Farm Bureau picnic. The exact site isn’t decided but Lanark city park is likely for convenient access and shaded livestock exhibits.
