State To Close Job Office On July 4 Holiday
The Mt. Carroll office of the Illinois State Employment Service at City Hall will be closed for the July 4 holiday. Service is normally held only on Thursdays. County Deaths in Shannon and Savanna Obituaries
Shannon county obituary items report Shannon resident Shannon Martin aged 67 died at his farm home after an extended illness. Funeral services were held at the home and Shannon Evangelical church with burial in the Brethren cemetery. He is survived by his wife Minnie Dearshaw, two daughters Ruth Meyers and Pearl Miller, and sister Lena Albright. The Savanna item notes C Ernest Boice died at his East Savanna home after years of ill health culminating in a paralytic stroke. He was born in 1876 in Linn county and moved to Savanna in 1899, later working for the Milwaukee railroad until 1934. He leaves his wife, daughter Mrs. Thomas Ladd, son Robert, and sister Mrs. W. H. Hobson.

Defense tax burden now being felt countywide
Monday brought a sharp rise in living costs as the new defense program taxes took effect. Petroleum firms hiked gasoline by a half cent per gallon while cigarettes rose about a cent per pack and most theatre and amusements jumped to reflect the 10 percent tax. Club and lodge dues taxed at $25 or more per year saw a 1 percent increase under the new structure. Beer and liquor prices also rose with a $1 per barrel federal tax on beer and 75 cents per gallon on liquor.
Three Escape Injury In Ford Car Crash Near Savanna
Four oclock Thursday afternoon a Ford coach carrying Miss Freda King Miss Irene King and Maurice Clifton tumbled over a ten foot embankment at the east end of Plum river bridge on Wacker road southeast of Savanna. All escaped with bruises after Clifton crawled out and assisted the others. They contacted Miss Kings parents who brought another car to the Savanna garage for repairs.

Rail Mill at Savanna Employs Thirty-Six Men
The Milwaukee rail reclamation mill in Savanna employs 36 workers and will reclaim about 25,000 tons of steel rails this year, about 20 percent more than 1949. Rails are sawed, drilled, and classified for sidings and lighter trackage. The plant, opened in 1890 after Watertown and fire, handles up to 100,000 tons annually and currently sawing 90 and 100 pound rails from Omaha main lines. 20 second cuts.
