The writer notes unusually cautious Midwest drivers on a recent Sunday with speeds near 30 to 40 mph and few cars on the road. Davenport to Clinton traffic was light, no major accidents occurred, and drivers often stayed in control despite minor incidents. Neighboring weather and farming conditions affected travel and crops.
Shannon poet Miss Joy E. Willey, whose verses appeared in northern Illinois papers, was asked for permission to publish her poem Armistice Day with photo and bio in Who's Who in Poetry in America. Her work has appeared in Dixon Evening Telegraph, The Pageant of Poetry, The Poetry Digest Annual, and she has set a song poem Peace Rose to music by Lowell Patton. She won honors as class poet in high school and is noted for paintings.
Carroll county's selective service board announces the fifth registration for young men born between January 1 1922 and June 30 1924 who have turned 18 or 19 or reached age 20 since December 31. Registration takes place at the post office building Mt Carroll on June 26 27 29 and 30 with hours 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. local officials expect about half the third registration totals.
A letter to The Review reports Savanna Ordnance Depot has organized a baseball team and seeks to schedule 50-50 net receipts games with nearby teams. Lt. Simon W. Pilzninski says the post has no field yet but a facility is under construction. once available, visiting teams may come to the post, though no paid admission will be charged. Interested teams should contact Lt. Pilzninski.
Officials of the Carroll County Taxpayers Association faced a small turnout at a Thursday night meeting in Milledgeville. Fewer than 20 attendees from Fair Haven Wysox and Elkhorn Grove townships heard remarks from local and regional figures including Charles Harris J H Shirk and Thomas of Savanna. Eichelberger of Woodstock spoke on taxpayer cooperation with officials to cut taxes and boost township economies, urging increased membership led by Ben Williamson of Mt Carroll.
The fourth annual Carroll county picnic for former residents of Franklin County Pennsylvania will be held June 21, 1942, at Old Mill Park Savannah. A basket dinner will be served at noon with ice cream and coffee provided. A free will offering will be taken. Mrs John Warren of Milledgeville is secretary.
A tuberculosis clinic will be held in Savannah on July 15, county nurse Mrs. Nell Stewart said this week.
Chadwick social rounds report visitors at the Ray Isenhart residence including Mrs. Harold Rahn and daughter from Durand Mr and Mrs Charles Shuman and family and Mrs Mina Isenhart. Afternoon callers included William Shuman and son and grandson from Sterling.
Virginia Wachtel daughter of Mr and Mrs Earl R Wachtel Mt Carroll and Robert L Grove son of Mr and Mrs P F Grove Mt Carroll were married at Mt Carroll Methodist church. Rev James A Foard officiated. They will reside in Derry Pa after July 1 with Grove employed by Westinghouse.

Clingan Savanna now of Muskogee Okla and James R. Ely Mt Carroll now of Rock Island plus Joseph H. Schubert transferred from Chicago board.
County Clerk Walter Watson reports multiple marriage licenses issued this past week to couples from Mt. Carroll Savanna Thomson Stockton and Gra Haven. Indictments returned by the June circuit court grand jury include a larceny case against Wilbur Harding and Charles Howes. Voter registration begins in the county clerk’s office with more cards expected. Real estate transfers include Savanna parcels to Wilson Fulrath B&L and others and several quitclaims and warranty deeds across Savanna Broadmor Cherry Grove and Chadwick.
Mrs. Charles Savage of Shannon was knocked unconscious for hours when lightning struck a tree and the clothes line beside her as she tended small chickens during a severe thunderstorm. Her face bruised and one side of her body numb after regaining consciousness.
Mr and Mrs Clifford Shephard of Peoria announce the birth of a daughter on Sunday June 7. The father is son of Eber Shephard of Center Hill, Republican nominee for Carroll county sheriff.
Kenneth Doyle of Lanark has enlisted in the U S Army. Doyle, aged 34, recently signed up under recruiting officer Ree ford. He previously led a unit for several years at Riverette Military retreat in Gainesville, Georgia.
Carroll County rationing board reports permits issued in the last week of May for new autos and tires. The list names residents from Mt Carroll Chadwick Savanna Lanark Milledgeville Shannon Milledgeville Thomson and others receiving permits for new autos obsolete tires truck tires and tubes passenger tires and recapping tires. A second list covers the first week of June with four new autos and additional tires and tubes for several towns.
Obituaries record Auguet Racker Lanarke-Fueens, aged 9, of Lanark, funeral in Lanark cemetery with Pastor Koe Mas Sellondel officiating. Anna Grell, died in Shannon, burial in Brethren Cemetery. Augustus Johns, 83, of Savanna, funeral in First Methodist Church with burial in Savanna Cemetery. Columbus Snovel, age 86, of Lanark, died at Mrs Elin Peters apartment. funeral at Frank Funeral Home and burial in Lanark Cemetery. Surviving relatives listed for each, including wives, children, siblings, and grandchildren.
Canyon Camp near Woodbine operated by U S Grant Connell Inc Boy Scouts of America opened for the season on Monday June 1. A Junior camp leader training period will be held June 18 19 20 and the first troop camping session begins June 21. Last session starts July 19. Troops bring their own adult leaders and run their own programs as separate units. Senior camp staff under Field Scout Executive Clifford J Richards coordinates all programs.
Two Rockford men escaped injury in an early Sunday crash on route 64 near the old fair grounds at Mt Carroll. A. T. Rugland and a Mr. Nelson were uninjured aside from minor bruises as their car struck a culvert head on. The left front wheel, fender, and frame were badly damaged and the car was sent to a Rockford garage for repairs.
Sunday guests and extended family visits fill Thomson households. Mr and Mrs Arthur Smotfman hosted in the Graharing home with Betty Lou Wilt returning for a weeks stay. Alfred Glaw and Dorothy of Chicago visited Mr and Mrs William Imel.
Willa Gilman, member of Savanna’s Poliaippi 4-H club, displayed the grand champion lamb Monday in the Carroll County fat lamb show at Savanna. Max Rahn of Lanark Best End club took second, Richard Allfen of Milledgeville third, Hazel Dauphin of Baván fourth. Seventy-two sheep entered by 45 boys from Mt. Carroll Lanark Milledgeville and Savanna. John K. Mori e of Chadwick judged.
Dorie Nast, a year old daughter of Mr and Mrs Leo Nast, nearly drowned last Thursday afternoon after jumping from a boat deck at the north end of Marquette park Savanna into deep water. Laurence H Miles a Savanna banker, saw the plunge, jumped ashore and pulled her to safety after she sank twice. The child was among youths playing by the dock when she slipped into the deep water.
Carroll county federated clubs plan a fall conference in Savanna with the Savanna Woman's club providing the program. Four district chairmen will attend the 14th district federation meeting on Sept 24 in Sterling. A bylaws committee was named to draft new county rules and printing war time program booklets will be discontinued. Members include Mrs Oscar Dachler Chadwick Mrs Burger Runnels and Mrs M W Stark.
J M Cheeseman Carroll county stockman led a high selling drove of cattle at Chicago Stock Yards selling Hereford heifers at 15.50 per cwt. The price marked one of the market's highs for this class on Wednesday.
A flurry of Sunday and Monday visits ties Hillsdale to Dav enport Shel buryville Milledgeville Bethlehem and Chicago with guests from Bowles Werner Bast and Mest households. Families hosted dinners and trips while others traveled for auto races and local visits highlighting community ties and travels.
