The county board appointed 20 precinct election officials for the coming year. Republican and Democratic lists, prepared by caucuses, were approved with most precincts under Republican control except four Savanna precincts where Democrats hold the majority. Names of judges and clerks are listed by precinct with respective party designations.
Attorney Charles E. Stuart and county war bond coordinator report annual pledges totaling 413070 21 for Carroll county after breaking down by city village and rural district. May cash sales across Savanna Mt Carroll Milledgeville Shannon Thomson Chadwick and Lanark banks and post offices are listed with totals and a grand sum of 128500 50. Stamp sales excluded but substantial.
Friends and neighbors gave Rev and Mrs J W Bucklin a farewell courtesy on Friday evening. Mr and Mrs Herman Dachler spent Sunday afternoon visiting in the Henry Keil home.
The Carroll county supervisors appropriated 2838.33 for right of way and court costs in potential condemnation for state aid road 8 from York township on route 171 to route 88 northwest of Milledgeville. They approved gravel road plans and noted the state highway department’s approval, with no start date given. Additional actions included halting surplus food distribution expenses after July 1 1942, granting blind benefits to Robert E Knorr, and funding 400 for 4 H club work this year. County officials semi annual reports were reviewed, election judges and clerks named, and polling places for 20 precincts set.
J E Griswold of Freeport was elected Thirteenth district commander of the American Legion at Mt Morris where WWI veterans from six northern Illinois counties met. Also named were senior vice commander Lyle Wilcox of Sterling and junior vice commander E N Bower of Dixon with Fr F C Vogt as color bearer. Auxiliary officers include director Mrs Gladys Edson Mt Morris and chaplain Mrs Vera Murphy Mt Carroll with other posts filled by Mrs Josephine Haas Am boy and Mrs Ruth Wetzel Byron.
Clerk Walter Watson reports marriage licenses granted in the past week to Harry F. Godes and Clara K. Hinrichsen of Savanna Donald A. Miller of Mt. Carroll and Betty Jane Parker of Savanna Leofwin A. Jessen and Margaret C. Colyer of Clinton Iowa Curtiss Martin and Ione L. Miner of Hanover.
The federal five dollar automobile tax stamps go on sale at post offices nationwide on June 10 and owners must obtain them by July 1. The stamps cover the coming fiscal year starting July 1 and replace prior stamps. Commissioner Helvering said stamps should not conflict with state windshield rules and will aid gasoline rationing card issuance in affected areas. Ruth D. Bowers was granted a divorce from Kenneth W. Bowers in circuit court Tuesday.
Mrs. Gus Scherman 40 of Savanna dies after surgery complications at Savanna City Hospital. Service held at Savanna Community Church with burial in Center Hill Cemetery. Dorotha Fulrath born 1901 near Mt Carroll. married Gus Sherman about 14 years ago. survives husband, son Robert Lee, mother, sisters, brother, and many relatives. Mrs. Perry Walker 44 of Savanna dies of heart attack. service at Wheellee Funeral Home Rock Falls with burial in IOOF Cemetery in Oe Falls. born Milledgeville 1898. survives husband, son, Adelbert, mother, sisters, brothers, and several in-laws. Mrs. Millie Ross, 73, J. Carroll resident, dies of heart trouble at Savanna Hospital. funeral at Frank Funeral Home Mt. Carroll. burial Oak Hill Cemetery. survived by son Frank and sister Hattie Williamson, six grandchildren.
About 70 percent of the 1941 tax bill in Carroll county had been collected by Monday night, totaling 450545 dollars. Shannon township tops at 77 percent, Lima 76 percent, and Fair Haven and Rock Creek at 75 percent. A third distribution of 1941 funds was paid June 5 totaling 186950 dollars to townships including Washington Woodland Freedom Cherry Grove Shannon Lima Rock Creek Salem Mt. Carroll Savanna York Fair Haven Wysox Elkhorn Grove.
Roy Schreiner of Carroll County marketed Aberdeen Angus yearling steers from Chadwick feedlots in midweek Chicago trade. The 13 head at 912 pounds sold for 14.25 per cwt and 19 head averaging 1054 pounds brought 12.50 per cwt.
A marriage license was issued in Freeport last week to Frederick C. Hoff and Eleanor R. Hettinger, both residents of Savanna.
Ten finalists from Carroll County took a Saturday exam at the county superintendent of schools office for University of Illinois scholarships. Nine vie for the two general grants, one seeks the home economics award, while no applicant challenged the agriculture scholarship. Competitors include Laverta Nipe Ned Schaut Bob Kipnis Jack Demaree John Ahrens Robert Reiff Charles Miles Paul Siedenburg Melvin Miller Grace Keeney with the count aided by state representative Franklin A. Stransky who awards the second highest rank recipient.
Eber D. Shepherd of Carroll County civil defense council and Joseph Loeser of Savanna attend an air raid warden instructors school in Jacksonville this week. Shepherd represents Carroll county civilian defense. Loeser was appointed by the American Legion post commander in Savanna.
Frances Shimer college Mt. Carroll awarded degrees at the 89th commencement Sunday. Five Carroll county girls Evel yn Asay Jeannet te Hostetter Fern Ann Kingery Suzanne Miles and Marjorie Robbe were among the graduates joining Virginia Van de Land of Fulton.
The annual Tripp reunion will be held Sunday, June 21 at Old Mill Park in Savanna. Table committee members include Wade Tripp of Savanna, Mrs. William Castle of Dixon, Mrs. Anthony Cambman, and Miss Lena Tripp. Attendees are asked to bring their own table service and drink.
A series of Savanna area weddings are reported. Mis Ethel McCall and Harry Lawrence wed at Mt. Sterling Lutheran church, with attendants Frederica Colver and Alva McCall. Margaret Colver wed Leofwin Jessen at St. John's rectory, and Evelyn Kelly with Samuel Anderson Jr. also tie the knot in Missouri and Savanna. A number of couples plan new homes in Preston, Detroit, and Mt. Carroll as they begin married life.
More than 70 farmers in Carroll County soil conservation district planted corn on the contour this year, per Ernest Rose. He notes over 50 had used the method previously, while others tried it for the first time. Contour farming helps control erosion on sloping land, evident after recent heavy rains. Most plant with a power drop attachment to space hills properly and avoid thick stands.
Oral arguments are heard by the state supreme court in an appeal by Milwaukee and Burlington railroads over delinquent taxes for 1919. Attorneys challenge the base valuation used in Carroll County and claim the statewide base should be 5 percent in 1939, affecting tax extensions.
J C Bennett of Milledgeville leads May county DHIA with four Brown Swiss cows averaging 1273 pounds milk and 47.6 pounds butterfat. Charles Hogg of Thomson ranks second with 1180 pounds milk and 45.7 fat from 18 Holsteins.
County Clerk Walter Watson announced plans to appoint a deputy registrar in each town to accept registrations during the summer to avoid travel to the county seat. The new act requires in person registration with the county clerk or in precincts on Sept. 19 and Oct. 6 with hours 6 am to 9 pm. supplies delayed may force affidavits for late registrants.
Loyal Ready 20 a Savanna NYA chauffeur suffered bruises and possible internal injuries when the government car he drove veered off a curve near Union Grove and crashed through a fence into an oats field. A companion was unhurt and Ready was taken to a Morrison hospital.
A seven women and five men jury directed by Judge George C. Dixon found Wm. Geineman sane at the time of the killings of Ada Krugjohan and Charles Krugjo han. Psychiatrists' tests supported insanity pleas, but the court directed a verdict of sanity, sending the youth to the Hlinda department of safety for confinement in a state institution for the criminally insane.
The June term of circuit court begins next Monday June 15 in Carroll County with Judge Harry F E Wheat of Freeport presiding. The grand jury is called for 2 PM the same day. Six new criminal cases eight new common law suits and four new chancery matters are listed. Notable cases include The People vs William J Geiserman murder and The People vs Louis Legel forgery. Grand jurors named include Mrs John Wurster Harry Juddi Ray Smith Harold Yochem Lloyd Edler and others from multiple townships.
At a county civilian defense council meeting in the courthouse George Hedges of the state council urged continued salvage of scrap iron for defense needs. Ralph Fahrney reported 910 tons of scrap iron collected since Jan 1 with an estimated 300 more tons to come. 60 tons of paper, 8 tons of old rubber and nearly two tons of rags also gathered. Miss Ann Marth of Savanna visited the Hoffmans Thursday through Sunday.
