Three Students Compete for U of I Scholarships
Examinations for University of Illinois scholarships were held by Carroll county students in Chadwick Milledgeville and Savanna. Three competed for two general county scholarships with top two grades earning the awards. a separate award by State Rep Stransky went to the next highest grade. Two consignments of yearling Hereford heifers from Carroll County sold well at Chicago Stock Yards last week. Paul Wessner of Shannon marketed 30 head averaging 888 pounds at 11.25 per cwt and H Woessner of Shannon sold 55 head at 11.00 per cwt.

July 7 Referendum Date Set for Carroll County Soil District
Monday, July 7 has been set as the referendum date for landowners within the proposed Carroll County soil conservation district. Formation has state approval but requires majority landowner votes in favor. The district would cover Woodland Freedom Washington Mt. Carroll and part of Salem townships and connect with a related Daviess County district. The county board voted to support the project as the farm lies within the proposed district.

Plan to gravel half of county road under way
County highway officials announced that only the western half of the 12 mile county road from York township to Wysox township will be graded and surfaced with gravel this year due to motor fuel tax funds. The project runs from 171 at Bower corner through Ideal and Fair Haven to near Milledgeville then north to highway 88. A new culvert is needed at the Ed Olson farm on the county line road and will be considered by the highway authorities.

Obituary: Herbert L. Rawlins Sr. of York Township
Herbert L. Rawlins Sr. 72 lifelong York township resident died at 2 16 p m Friday at his Thomson home after a year and a half illness. He was cherished in Carroll county for his community service and friendship. A former teacher and farmer, he served as Republican central committeeman for York township and as Thomson postmaster from 1922 to 1934. He married Hattie Carpenter in 1891. Survived by widow, three sons Kyle Vernon and Herbert Jr all of Thomson, four grandchildren, and several step relatives. Funeral services were held in Thomson with burial at Lower York cemetery.
