Issuing Tires And Auto Certificates By Carroll Rationing Board

Carroll county rationing board issued certificates during the third week in May for purchase of tires and for recapping. The list shows many individuals and firms receiving tires tubes and recapping services for autos and trucks, including several from Mt. Carroll, Savanna, Chadwick, Milledgeville, Lanark, Thomson, Shannon, and Savanna. The record includes quantities and vehicle types with numerous names and locations.

Heavy Freight Traffic on Mississippi River Rises During Holiday

Freight traffic on the Mississippi increases over the holiday weekend as four upriver tows travel upstream Sunday and Monday and another on Saturday. Tow details include Twin Cities with four oil barges, C. C. Webber and Patrick J. Hurley with four barges each, Mark Twain carrying coal and general merchandise, and Husky first trip with two gasoline barges. Southbound boats include Lone Star Tom Sawyer Kansas City Socony and Alice M Tyler.

Induction Notice Sent to Twenty-One County Men

The county selective service board issued induction notices to 21 men instructing them to report June 1. The list includes transfers from other centers and two Carroll county residents living out of county, with several Thomson Lanark Mt. Carroll Savanna and Dixon residents named. Camp Grant Troops Lead Legion Parade On June 6

Camp Grant troops will head the 13th District American Legion parade at Mount Morris on Saturday June 6. Russell Carson Enrolls as Flying Cadet at Kelly Field

Russell Carson son of Mr and Mrs Robert Carson of Woodland township has enrolled as a flying leader at Kelly Field Texas. He joined the Army Air Corps ground force about two years ago and rose to staff sergeant before his enrollment. He has been stationed at Kelly Field and recently visited Mt Carroll while in charge of convoys of gasoline tank trucks for the air corps.

Eugene Grove Named College Music Director

Eugene F. Grove, son of Mr and Mrs P F Grove of Mt Carroll, will head the music department at Atlantic Christian College Wilson NC for next year. He has taught voice there this year after graduating from Mt Carroll High School and Illinois Wesleyan University and previously taught music at Lanark High School.

Higher May Payments for Aged and Dependent Children

Illinois old age assistance payments rose to a new high of 3 937 054 dollars paid to 150 428 persons. Carroll county distributed 10 818 dollars to 484 recipients and aid to dependent children totaled 1 462 14 with 101 dependents covered. A record crowd attended the Mt. Carroll Horse Show at Glengarry Farm, Mt. Carroll, amid hot weather. Judges faced close calls in three and five gaited and stock classes as Fox View Stables of Oswego earned many second and third places. no rider won more than one first. Carroll Native Returns From Germany After Years Abroad

Mrs. Linnie M. Appel, 55, a Carroll native, arrived in New York aboard the Drottningholm from Germany where she lived for two decades with her husband Ernest who died there. Once Iowa farmers, they also ran Riverview resort near Thomson. She planned to join her mother Mrs. Mary Kennedy and sister Mrs. Rhoda Hoffman in Savanna.

Savanna Native to Receive Naval Ensign at Annapolis

Richard Rhodes Law 22 of Belvidere will be among 17 Illinois midshipmen to receive ensign commissions at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis Maryland on June 19. He is a Savanna native, son of Mr and Mrs Ives Law of Belvidere. His father owned drug stores in Savanna and Belvidere and served as a pharmacist in World War I aboard a transport making 15 Atlantic crossings. The late Mrs Frank Rhodes, great grandmother of Richard, was Savanna’s first white born resident.

Heavy Showers Hit Area In Early Week Weather

The region experienced heavy showers starting Monday with additional downpours Tuesday and another storm Wednesday morning. In Chadwick, Reynold Lang reported damage to phone and electric wires along route 78 after the Tuesday storm. Lightning knocked out fuses in a 138,000 volt transmission line on Monday and Tuesday nights.

Nutrition conference set for June 19 and 20 in Springfield

A statewide nutrition conference will be held June 19 20 at the Leland hotel in Springfield. The Illinois Nutrition committee sponsors the program to promote local nutrition activities through county committees. Carroll county members plan to attend while Lanark and Mt. Carroll prepare nutrition courses led by home economics teachers, with more communities likely to follow.

Fulton elected to supreme court by 3 to 1 vote

William J. Fulton wins the Carroll County supreme court seat by a 3 to 1 margin. Officials estimate the Tuesday election cost about 1,160 dollars to the county, roughly 85 cents per vote, based on costs for judges polling place rental posting notices and returning results across 20 precincts. With 1,455 ballots cast and ballot printing excluded, the per voter cost nears the dollar mark.

Can Strawberries Be Canned Or Frozen With Little Sugar

Carroll county residents can obtain state supplied guidance from the Farm Bureau on canning with little or no sugar and on freezing berries for locker storage without sweetening. Mrs. M. P. Roske notes juice pressing for large batches reduces added water. Separately, local cattle at Chicago Stock Yards saw Frank Livengood of Lanark sell mixed steers and heifers at 13.00 per cwt and Merboth Sword ship 21 head at 14.15 per cwt, averaging 1085 and 1191 pounds respectively.

Fulton Wins Illinois Supreme Court Seat Over Shaw

Judge William J. Fulton of Sycamore was elected to a nine year term on the Illinois Supreme Court, defeating Justice Elwyn R. Shaw by about a three to one margin. Fulton led with 34,410 votes to Shaw’s 11,718 in 550 of 560 precincts in the 12 county district. Carroll County backed Fulton 1,046 to 308. Shaw carried only one county, Stephenson, due to Freeport votes. turnout was light, roughly half of the 1983 judicial election. Fulton will assume office between June 15 and 20.

A survey of traffic safety records at the close of May shows perfect records for May in Carroll Whiteside Jo Daviess Stephenson Ogle and Lee counties In the first five months of 1942 the six county area reported 20 fatalities with Jo Daviess the only county without a highway death this year Carroll and Whiteside each had one and Lee four Stephenson five and Ogle six fatalities

Tent Caterpillars Alarm Carroll County Gardens

Farm Adviser M. P. Roske warns tent caterpillars are damaging fruit and walnut trees in Carroll County. The pests form nests in branches and strip leaves but can be controlled with arsenate sprays or by burning small colonies with a pole. He notes no widespread cankerworm reports yet and alerts to a new issue with sweetclover weevils.

Mrs Roy Hinebaugh is honored at a gathering hosted by Mrs Clarence Van Buskirk north of Chadwick last Wednesday.
