Eight Carroll county young men left for Chicago Monday to report for induction into the U S Army for training. Four others scheduled for July induction were delayed or redirected amid appeals stays and earlier transfers. The group includes John N Beck Shannon leader and other named men with Wallace Geisz also departing for induction.
The county treasurer's office announces an additional 1 percent penalty on delinquent taxes starting August 1, bringing the total to 3 percent on unpaid personal taxes and the first installment of real estate. Taxpayers may pay the second installment of real estate without penalty until September 1.
County winners in the 1941 Em merson Memorial Floral Contest were announced Monday by Walter A. Rosenfield director of the Department of Public Works and Buildings. The annual contest drew about 1700 entries from Illinois farm owners and will culminate at the Illinois State Fair August 9 to 17 with grand prizes and premiums for county winners. A regional judging committee is selecting best displays in nine districts and a state committee will name grand prize winners. The event is co sponsored by the Illinois State Fair and Public Works Department with the Illinois Federation of Women’s clubs and the Garden club of Illinois.
Officers and men of the hand ordnance company from the Savanna Ordnance depot depart early this week for Arkansas to take part in army maneuvers.
Savanna police arrested eleven people in four days for traffic violations including nine speed or stop sign offenses. Hearings were held before Police Magistrate C. J. Fisher. fines ranged from 2 to 50 dollars with costs. Additional suspects faced speeding and disorderly conduct charges in later sessions.
Senorita Laura Molina, head of her class at an American school in Mexico City, has earned a Frances Shimer junior college scholarship at Mt. Carroll. She will enroll in September and plans to speak on Mexico and its people in various clubs.
Rosenbaum Bros of Chicago completed five concrete grain storage tanks north of the Savanna elevator at roughly 45 000 to 50 000 dollars. Each 30 by 82 foot tank holds 50 000 bushels and carries a 16 inch top conveyor. Grain is already stored with ten car loads of oats, about 15 000 bushels, in the finished tanks.
Water at the Proving Grounds was condemned last Friday after tests found disease germs. Water boys deliver drinking water with added chlorine as workers, facing near one hundred degree heat, express disapproval of the drink.
Decrease in unemployment benefit claims leads to the closure of the itinerant Illinois state employment service office at Sterling. The Mt. Carroll courthouse office will end its Thursday 2:00 to 3:30 p m session. Applicants may report to Sterling or Savanna for full service and benefits claims.
James Beck of Shannon has enlisted in the U S regular army and has been sent as a member of the air corps to Scott Field according to Corp Ralph A Miller of the Freeport army recruiting office. The Freeport recruiting office was reopened July 8 after it had been closed earlier this year.
Thundershowers Tuesday night brought relief from a week of extreme heat with temperatures near 100 degrees daily. By Wednesday morning highs returned to the 90s as more showers were forecast for the night. A Savanna child drowned in Clinton Iowa’s municipal pool during a river excursion, with funeral services planned in Davenport.
Plans for Thomson's 17th annual Melon Day are underway with Labor Day September 1 set as the main event. WLS talent is expected for entertainment and a strong celebration is anticipated as melons look good and day treats promise to be among Thomson's best. The committee has not named new features yet while it ponders several possible additions. B R Lewis serves as general chairman with Garrett Bolhous in charge of concessions Irve Martindale sports Charles Groharing marshal of the day and F L Stagg handling gate and publicity.
Allen Airhart son of Mr and Mrs Henry Airhart from north of Savanna suffered a deep scalp laceration and a cracked neck vertebra after diving into a pool at Frances Shimer College. He received medical treatment from Dr Carroll and needed several stitches for the head wound.
Esther Merchant visits relatives and plans to resume teaching in Porto Rico. Harry Rowland and others work on Bell telephone lines in Lanark. Mrs G W Fulrath visits her son Arthur in Savanna hospital. Center Hill Sunday school names new officers led by Supt Loyal Seidenberg and Asst Supt Ear Holy. Mrs Oscar Smith and daughter Irenee holiday in Chicago. Margaret Weidman from Chicago visits in Frederick Gitz home.
Illinois unemployment compensation paid to Carroll County workers totaled 21426 over the two years ending June 30 1941. Statewide benefits reached 76164989. Benefits depend on past insured earnings with weekly checks from 7 to 16 dollars during total unemployment.
Frances Shimer college trustees re elect officers for the coming year. County agriculture defense committee is selected. Lanark farm wins first prize in county farm floral contest with other winners listed. Two Carroll county men leave Monday for induction into the army and two others are inducted through other draft boards.
Two Noel Coward one act plays are the main feature at the Frances Shimer Summer Theatre in Mt. Carroll Illinois on Friday night August 1 at 815. Coward's Red Peppers and Hands Across the Sea headline with vaudeville style acts Singing Waiter and Dancing Maiden completing the program. Lawrence Carra directs Hands Across the Sea to be performed on the floor among the audience with the cast close by.
A $37.70 theft from a cash register at Brooksie's tavern in Savanna occurred Monday night after entry between 1 a.m. and 6 a.m. The Collins Eat Shop was also entered with only soft drink bottles taken. Frank Brooks, the tavern owner, reported the hours and break in.
Two companies seek permission to set up air mail service for Savanna and 105 cities. Mercury Development plans feeder routes across Illinois Wisconsin Minnesota Iowa and Missouri with Savanna on Route C. Southwest Feeder Airlines also seeks a certificate of public convenience and necessity.
County 4-H members prepare to exhibit at the annual Roundup in Lanark on August 26. Swine projects must be vaccinated to avoid disqualification. Exhibitors should avoid multiple trackers to prevent judging delays and missing stock. Premium lists and rules will be sent to members for careful compliance.
A contract for construction of 40000 feet of standard gauge railroad track at the Savannah Ordnance depot was awarded to Deckert and McDowell of Chicago for 196611 dollars. Work begins August 7 with completion expected by October 25, per the War Department.
