The Grange, proud owner of the only rural general headquarters in Washington, began plans for a new agri cultural center as early as 1873. After a lengthy drive funded by members nationwide, a 1940s building was bought near the White House, later taken by the U S government in 1956 for the Executive Office Building project, with a 360000 payment deemed inadequate.
