Babson Park Mass July 28 Babson discusses stability in wholesale commodity prices amid recent fears of inflation. He notes the Bureau of Labor index at 110.5, forecasts modest gains in industrials and metals, and expects farm prices to ease later in summer with mixed cattle and hog trends.
The FAA awarded an 88450 contract to Foss Builders to build a radar microwave relay line from Aurora Illinois to West Branch Illinois with stations at Maple Park Lee Dixon Chadwick Iowa Bryant and New Liberty. A Chadwick unit will sit on Myron Friederichs farm to house radar gear in a 15 year lease. Completion is set for September 7.
Dennis Burkholder receives the Certificate of Merit in Farm Mechanics from the Thor Research Center for Better Farm Living in Marengo Illinois for top mechanics among Chadwick high school graduates. Harold C. Fox's driver license is revoked for driving while intoxicated. Inflation outlook is cautious with potential war as a risk. Carroll county fair plans ostrich races on Aug 13 with drivers needed and safety gear promised for 1960.
The Savanna Camera Club oversees the 1960 Carroll County Fair photo display in the Hobby Tent. Entries accepted Thursday to Saturday 4:00 to 8:30 pm with film pickup Tuesday to Thursday. Photos must be taken at the fair and may cover Beef Dairy Sheep Swine Flowers Tractor pulls Ponies Horses Best Human Interest and Miscellaneous. Prizes range from 10 to 1 dollars and winning photos become fair property.
The 1960 Carroll County Fair projects record livestock entries and $11 000 plus premiums in the open show and nearly $4 000 in the junior show. Ralph Spanogle heads beef with Angus Short horn and Hereford classes while Morris Farms funds the registered Aberdeen Angus. Ervin Loos announces Feature Breed Guernseys with Holsteins and Brown Swiss to follow across the fair grounds.
Ned Geldmacher in charge of parade arrangements announces a time change for the Carroll County Fair parade to start at 7 p.m. on August 11. Judging begins 30 minutes earlier, with cash prizes from 75 to 10 dollars for organization and commercial floats and varied prizes for other classes. Bands urged to enter for a trophy and cash awards.
Northern Illinois University ran outdoor education courses for 39 teachers this summer at the Lorado Taft Field Campus on the Rock River near Oregon Illinois. Programs covered arts and crafts outdoor education facility upkeep and field experiences in outdoor teacher education.
Mr and Mrs Joe Haas of German Valley and former residents visited Lanark on Wednesday. The Church of the Brethren parsonage received a fresh coat of paint by congregational members. Mrs Lulu Sword assists in caring for Mrs Charles Zuck who is recovering from illness. Bids for Lanark street maintenance were opened at city hall on Friday. Leslie Walter expands his plant with a fifth greenhouse addition.
The North Side birthday club donated to the shelter in the city park. Rev. Richard Bouwkamp family were away weekend and Rev. Alfred Lile filled the Reform church pulpit as migrant workers chaplain. A luncheon honors Mrs. Peter Rasmussen daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Crofton leaving for Japan mission work on Aug 4 at 12 30 in the church.
The sheep department supervised by Roy Beck plans full classes this year with 2240 in premiums. Breeds shown include Shropshire Oxforddown Hampshire Horned Dorset Cheviot Corriedale and Suffolk. First prize pays 12 with some classes offering five places for a total of 2926 in premiums. Also noted are swine department details and local social notes.
The 8th annual Carroll County Fair opens Tuesday August 9 at Shhell Park with a 1960 Horse Show as the feature. Two shows at 1 30 pm and 6 30 pm present halter pleasure and timed events plus shovel race parade and pair classes. Enter via county fair premium section or from superintendent Tom Binkley. Local and neighboring horses to be exhibited.
