Officials report 208 boys and girls enrolled in Carroll County 4-H agricultural and home economics clubs after club reports. Six agricultural clubs show 204 projects while six home ec clubs operate with varied enrollments and leaders across Lanark Savanna Milledgeville Thomson Mt Carroll and Shannon communities.
Chestnut Park grade school begins the fall term on Tuesday September 5 with all teachers rehired. Staff includes Miss Marie Krahn grades 1-2 Miss Hazel Heinze principal grades 3-4 Miss Helen Workman grades 5-6 and Mrs Echo Wilcox grades 7-8. The board combined bus driver and janitor duties with Lewis Frosch in charge. Minor interior repairs and remodeling are underway and a newly installed stocker was tested and accepted.
The Office of Price Administration holds a July 26 meeting at the LeClaire Hotel in Moline to organize an Agriculture Advisory Committee. District Director Robert M. Harper outlines aims to gather farmer input on price control rationing and wartime agricultural coordination with 28 members invited from Illinois and Iowa counties.
Thomson reports that a dinner guest list includes Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Olds and son Albert of Clinton Iowa Mr. and Mrs. Francis Fisher of Benton Kansas Mrs. Carol Simpson of Iowa City and Mrs. Anna Jenkins. Pvt Dan Sack and Mrs Sack plan a Dallas Texas weekend visit with Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Tobey.
Norman French Jr met Dan Sack and visited with Dan and Louise at their home. Both men are stationed at Camp Hood in Texas. Ford Grim is painting the Ab Hook residence.
Harry Stakemiller 61 was found dead about 7 30 a m Friday in his Mt Carroll apartment. Coroner ruled heart attack and said he had been dead about four hours. Funeral in Mt Carroll and burial at Oak Hill. Survived by son Fay, daughter Mrs Reuben Oberhime, a brother Harmon, seven grandchildren. Sydney Spahr 54 of Lanark was found dead in her bed Friday morning by her son Alvin Bender and sister. Funeral at Lanark Frank funeral home and burial in Lanark cemetery. Survived by one son, a sister, and three grandchildren.
Mrs. Mary Fulrath Smith 75 died Friday night at her Mt Carroll area home. Funeral services were to be held Monday at Center Hill United Brethren Church with Rev. Stanley A. Birdsall officiating and burial in the church cemetery. Born Feb 21 1869 near Mt Carroll she was the daughter of George and Margaret Fulrath and married Charles Smith Aug 21 1891. Surviving are her husband a son Raymond at home a daughter Mrs Claude Wilcox a brother Peter Fulrath a sister Mrs Eliza Smith all of Mt Carroll and three others.
Mrs John Tenley 84 died at 5 31 a m Monday at her son Kenneth Tenley’s home in Mt Carroll burial in Hickory Grove Cemetery followed funeral at 2 30 p m Wednesday at Wacker Church of the Brethren Rev William Kendall officiating Lizzie Baker born June 30 1860 in Carroll county daughter of Andrew and Anna Baker married to John Tenley who died about five years ago Surviving besides her son is one sister Mrs Adam Bickelhaupt Mt Carroll
Mrs. Mary Dale 63 of Woodland township died in East Moline state hospital after a stay since November 4 1943 and funeral arrangements were made at Christian funeral home Mt Carroll She was born May 1 1881 and survived by siblings daughters grandchildren and great grandchildren Mrs Jessie Ann Haven 66 former Sterling resident died Tuesday at Caroline Mark Home Mt Carroll where she had lived five years Funeral services were set for 9 am Thursday at St Marys Catholic Church Sterling with burial in Riverside Cemetery She was born November 29 1878 in Sterling to Samuel and Sophia Mangan
Carroll county exceeded its fifth war loan quota but did not meet the time limit. The prize for leading quota went to Edwards county. Federal Reserve reports show Carroll county at 113 percent of its total quota totaling $1,053,925 with E bonds sales of $470,481 at 106 percent and individual sales of $906,447.
Carroll county Rural Youth members met in Farm Bureau hall for a program and social evening. They discussed the Rural Youth picnic and sports festival set for July 30 at Lowell Park Dix, with members from four northwestern Illinois counties joining the event.
A light pickup owned by George Daehler of Chadwick collided with the end of a semi trailer on Route 78 in Mt Carroll. Ted Turney of Chadwick fled the scene with minor injuries while the semi driver B O Moore of Maqueketa Iowa remained. Deputy Hicks investigated as traffic was briefly halted. Turney remained missing Wednesday morning.

Mr and Mrs Joseph Baumgartner of Hanover visited Mr and Mrs John Cooper Sunday. Joan Balk of Fulton is staying this week with the Ben Dykstra family. Miss Vada Rice spends a week at the Ted Martins home in Rochester Indiana.
Garner Mellen announces the marriage of Mies Dorie M. Garner to Donald W. Mellen at Pensacola Naval Air Station chapel on July 12. Attendants were Robert Stacy and Betty Snyder. The couple resides in Pensacola where he is stationed.
Announcement of the marriage between Cpl Elmer Miller son of Mr and Mrs Wesley Miller of Lanark and Betty Buntley daughter of Leroy Buntley of Milledgeville. The couple wed in Marysville California on a Saturday evening July 15. Miller serves at Camp Beale California. The bride wore a powder blue dress with white accessories and gardenia lavardia corsage. Mrs Miller is a Milledgeville High School graduate who attended Sterling business college and worked at Graebling implement store before marriage.
The Quad Cities OPA forms a restaurant council to advise operators on posting prices under new 40 item listing rules. Kenneth Davidson to chair, covering Illinois and Iowa. Posting required by August 16 1944 with items and ceiling prices displayed for public view. Operators must submit triplicate lists to local boards.
The Carroll county farm machinery rationing committee issued permits July 17 to July 22 1944 for tractors mowers side delivery rake grain blower shallow well pump and related equipment to named residents including Peter Muhlencamp Jr Joe Lower Donald L Hall Donald W Keller George Hammond Joseph P Weber and others. Mr and Mrs Oscar Martens spent Sunday afternoon with Mr and Mrs Chas Adolph.
Carroll county cattle led Chicago Stock Yards trading with top bids. A 1271 pound Hereford lot brought 17.65 per cwt, the year’s high and the highest July price in 25 years, tied to Lanark feedlots and Mt. Carroll farms. Additional Hereford consignments from Lanark and Mt. Carroll topped 17.25 to 17.50 per cwt on prior days.
Threshing began Monday near Thomson and Chadwick with several rigs in use. A heavy rain Tuesday night and showers Wednesday morning halted work. Sunday evening light showers and a storm near Savanna were reported. some areas were not affected. Moisture welcomed by gardeners though not drought-stricken as in neighboring counties.

Bastion, 26, Camp Grant POW guard, as a two time automobile thief who pled guilty and drew a two to five year penitentiary term. Fellow guards William Fonville and Felix Alcaraz face related charges as the court trims indictments and handles a divorce.
Governor Dwight H. Green announces the Illinois Division of Vocational Rehabilitation in Rock Island with offices at 415 416 Safety Building. Any person 16 or older may become eligible for training prosthetic devices surgery or therapy to become employable. Services include artificial limbs hearing aids and restoration aid, not charity but service. Veterans eligible under federal and state plans should inquire at the state office for eligibility if denied by the VA. Col W Don Jones leads the Rock Island office serving Mercer Whiteside Rock Island Carroll Warren counties and welcomes applicants and information.
Mrs Grace Teeter of LeClaire Iowa Mrs Les Rynott and son Cpl John L Rynott Mrs Earl Bennett of Fulton and daughter Mrs Newman Giles of Peoria visited Thursday with Mr and Mrs George St Ores. Mrs Giles left Saturday for Spokane to visit with her husband who is stationed there.
